Riesgo, adaptacion y resiliencia hídrica en pequeños y medianos productores agrícolas de las comunas de San Esteban y Santa María | Water risk, adaptation and resilience in small and medium agricultural producers of the communes of San Esteban and Santa María

El déficit hídrico, exacerbado por el cambio climático, está afectando profundamente la agricultura chilena, alterando las condiciones de producción y reduciendo la rentabilidad de los cultivos. Esta escasez de agua incrementa la vulnerabilidad del sector agrícola, dificultando su capacidad para mantener una producción sostenible de alimentos. En este contexto, el objetivo principal de este estudio fue identificar los riesgos, las adaptaciones y la resiliencia hídrica de los pequeños y medianos agricultores. Según esto, se definieron tres objetivos específicos: primero, identificar los principales factores de riesgo y vulnerabilidad que enfrentan estos agricultores debido al déficit hídrico; segundo, determinar las adaptaciones adoptadas por los agricultores para hacer frente a estos desafíos; y tercero, identificar las barreras y facilitadores que afectan su capacidad de adaptación. El estudio se centró en la región de Valparaíso, específicamente en las comunas de San Esteban y Santa María, ubicadas en las provincias de San Felipe y Los Andes, respectivamente. A través de una encuesta aplicada a 50 pequeños y medianos agricultores, se identificó una alta vulnerabilidad a los riesgos asociados con la falta de agua, pero también una notable disposición a adaptarse, lo que refleja un alto nivel de resiliencia. Entre los principales resultados, se identificaron soluciones como la creación de embalses o pequeños retenedores de agua para aprovechar el agua proveniente del deshielo de la cordillera en verano, el uso de enmiendas orgánicas para mejorar la retención de agua en el suelo y evitar su evaporación, la creación de redes asociativas para aumentar la competitividad de las producciones y la urgente necesidad de que se otorguen más capacitaciones y financiamiento para implementar mejoras tecnológicas en los predios, entre otros.

Water scarcity, worsened by climate change, is severely affecting Chilean agriculture, altering production conditions and reducing crop profitability. This water shortage increases the vulnerability of the agricultural sector, hindering its ability to maintain sustainable food production. In this context, the main objective of this study was to identify the risks, adaptations, and water resilience of small and medium-sized farmers. Three specific objectives were defined: first, to identify the main risk factors and vulnerabilities these farmers face due to water scarcity; second, to determine the adaptations adopted by farmers to cope with these challenges; and third, to identify the barriers and facilitators that influence their capacity to adapt. The study focused on the Valparaíso region, specifically in the communes of San Esteban and Santa María, located in the provinces of San Felipe and Los Andes, respectively. A survey of 50 small and medium-sized farmers was conducted, identifying a high vulnerability to the risks associated with water scarcity, but also a notable willingness to adapt, reflecting a high level of resilience. Among the main findings, solutions were identified, such as the creation of reservoirs or small water retention structures to better utilize water from the melting of the Andes mountains in summer, the use of organic amendments to improve water retention in the soil and prevent evaporation, the creation of associative networks to enhance production competitiveness, and the urgent need for more training and funding to implement technological improvements on farms, among others.
