Assessment of Awareness Level and Sources of Information on HIV/AIDS among Fisher folks around Kainji Lake Basin

This paper examined the knowledge of HIV/AIDS and vulnerability factors in the fisheries sector of the Kainji Lake Basin. The sampling procedure was in two stages. The Kainji Lake Basin was stratified into eight strata by Kainji Lake Management and Conservation Unit. The first stage was the selection of fishing communities considering the following criteria; location in the basin, scale of activities, proximity to services, diversity of fishing activities, composition of communities, landing sites and stable traditional institutions. The second stage of the sampling procedure consisted of selection of respondents by simple random technique. Thirty fishing communities were selected for data collection through the use of questionnaires. The data were subjected to descriptive, correlation and factor analysis. The findings revealed that the level of western education among the respondents is very low. The outcome of correlation analysis for respondents’ socioeconomic characteristic and HIV/AID vulnerability revealed that only the respondents’ education attainment impacted significantly on the level, estimated number, as well as the cases reported. About 99.5% of the respondents were aware of but lacked knowledge on the mode of transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS with few misconceptions on the knowledge found among the fisher folks. Only 27.1% said they have not received support in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the study area. About 42% of the respondents’ rate access to information very low in these fishing communities. The study proffers enlightenment campaigns on HIV/AIDS and education programme on safe sex and behaviour change remain key responses to addressing HIV/AIDS in the area.
