1988
Kang, C.B. (Kyeongsang National Univ., Chinju (Korea R.). Coll. of Agruculture)
This experiment was carried out to provide the data of blood chemistry in use of application to clinical diagnosis in racehorses. Blood was collected from 30 racehorses (female 17, male 13). Calcium, inorganic phosphorus, blood glucose, blood urea nitrogen, cholesterol, bilirubin, fibrinogen and ketone body in serum were analyzed. The values of calcium and inorganic phosphorus were maintained a certain level without much variation regardless of sex and species. Ca/P ratio was in the range of 3.13-3.35. The value of blood glucose was 60mg/100ml. Age and sex of racehorses make no difference in the value. The value of blood urea nitrogen and total cholesterol showed a tendency to increase according to the age. Total cholesterol value was somewhat higher in male than in female. The value of total bilirubin showed a tendency to increase according to the age. There was no difference between sexes in the value. The value of fibrinogen showed no apparent difference with age and sex. Ketone body was negative in all of the cases. There was no variation on the species of the racehorses

1988
Shin, D.H. (Chonnam National Univ., Kwangju (Korea R.). Coll. of Veterinary Medicine) | Choi, S.H. (Chonnam National Univ., Kwangju (Korea R.). Coll. of Pharmacy)
To examine the selectivity of verapamil, used in the cardiovascular diseases, on alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenoceptor-induced pressor responses, effects of verapamil on alpha-adrenoceptor agonist-induced pressor responses were investigated in urethane-anesthetized rabbits, spinal rabbits, rats and pithed rats. To evaluate the effects of verapamil on each pressor response induced by norepinephrine, phenylephrine and clonidine, these agonists were previously injected into an ear vein, and the same procedures were performed 1-2 min after treatment with intravenous verapamil. Intravenous verapamil produced dose-dependent depressor response in rabbits and rats. Pressor responses to intravenous norepinephrine (10 micro g/kg) and phenylphrine (30 micro g/kg) were inhibited by pretreatment with intravenous verapamil in rabbits and no difference was noted between the degree of both inhibitions of the pressor response by verapamil. Pressor responses to intravenous norepinephrine (3 micro g/kg), phenylephrine (20 micro/kg) and clonidine (300 micro g/kg) were inhibited by pretreatment with intravenous verapamil in spinal rabbits. No difference was noted between the inhibition of norepinephrine-induced pressor response and that of phenylephrine-induced pressor response by verapamil. The inhibition of clonidine-induced pressor response by verapamil was more prominent than that of norepinephrine- or phenylephrine-induced pressor response. Pressor responses to intravenous norepinephrine (3 micro g/kg) and phenylephrine (10 micro g/kg) were inhibited by pretreatment with intravenous verapamil in rats and no difference was noted between the degree of both inhibitions of the pressor response by verapamil

1988
Wee, S.H. | Park, S.J. (Chonnam Animal Health Laboratory, Soonchun (Korea R.). Soonchun Animal Health Station) | Lee, C.G. (Chonnam National Univ., Kwangju (Korea R.). Coll. of Veterinary Medicine)
Some hematological and biochemical indices were assayed in Korean native cattle naturally harbouring Fasciola hepatica infection and compared with uninfected controls. Affected animals revealed reduction in total erythrocyte count and hemoglobin content, and increase in total leukocyte count. Infected cattle had significantly lower levels of serum total protein, serum albumin and magnesium. Significantly higher values were obtained for the serum enzymes asparate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase

1988
Kang, Y.B. (Rural Development Administration, Anyang (Korea R.). Veterinary Research Institute)
Ixodes signatus nymphs were subjected to the scanning electron microscopy for the observation of the major physiological sense organs including Haller's organ. Funger prints and variable sensory setae were found on the body surface, and especially well developed setae were identified on the article IV and on the anal lobes. A central button-like organelle and numerous small holes were found in the spiracular plate. The Haller's organ was identified at the distal point of the tarsus I and regarded as the major sensory organ, chemoreceptor. Two types of sensory setae were observed, the shorter ones in front of the organ and the longer ones in distal front as well as behind the organ. The fully opened organ was ellipsoidal and a total of seven basiconic sensory pegs rooted deeply and shaped like well arranged hooks were found inside the organ

1988
Chang, S.J. | Lee, C.S. (Kyongbuk National Univ., Taegu (Korea R.). Coll. of Veterinary Medicine)
In order to know the effect of dexamethasone on the induction of the rabbit viral hepatitis, the pathological changes were observed in the native rabbits, 2 to 6 months old in age, that were injected by dexamethasone and liver emulsion of Angora rabbit naturally infected with viral hepatitis. The native rabbits injected by dexamethasone and liver emulsion were infected with viral hepatitis and died between 2 and 7 days after inoculation. Clinical signs and gross lesions were very similar to those of Angora rabbit which had naturally occurred. In microscopical findings, the hepatic lesions were characterized by peripheral necrosis of the lobules, and peripheral necrosis of the lobules with fatty changes of hepatic cells occurred in a few cases. Perivascular lymphocytic infiltration in the central nervous system was observed in some cases. The lesions of the other organs were very similar to those of Angora rabbit. On the other hand, the native rabbits that were injected by only liver emulsion of Angora rabbit naturally infected with viral hepatitis were not infected with the disease except in very few cases

1988
Chung, I.Y. | Kim, T.H. | Chung, H.W. | Chin, S.Y. | Yun, T.K. (Korea Advanced Energy Research Institute, Taejon (Korea R.))
Appreciable radiation exposures certainly occur in the workers who handle radioiodine in biochemical research, nuclear medicine diagnostics with the development of nuclear industries. But in the case of nuclear accidents, the early medical treatment of radiation injury should be necessary but little was reported in Korea till now. Accordingly, to achieve basic data for protective roles and medical treatment of radiation injury, the present studies were carried out to evaluate the decontamination of radioiodine by the administration of the antithyroid drugs. The administration of sodium iodide and potassium iodide results in rapid excretion of radioiodine and reduction of the whole body retention than the saline-only group. Regarding thyroid protective effects, sodium iodide, potassium iodide results in rapid excretion of radioiodine and reduction of the whole body retention than the saline-only group. Regarding thyroid protective effects, sodium iodide, potassium iodide and saline were effected significant in order. In the control(saline) group, if administered with enough fluids, the whole body retention of radioiodine is reduced temporary shifts. But as far as radioprotective effects are concerned, saline was not more protective than the other groups. In conclusion, in case of nuclear accidents, if being administered sodium iodide and saline as quickly as possible, the radioprotective effects against the radiation hazard might be markedly increased in the internal contamination of radioiodine

1988
Barnouin, Jacques | Paccard, P.
Nutritional risk factors for liver damage were surveyed in Black-Pied French dairy herds using serum glutamic dehydrogenase and gamma glutamyl transferase levels to monitor liver dysfunction. The 34 herds chosen were free of parasitic liver injuries. Feeding systems, nutritional blood parameters and production characteristics are analyzed. Two risk factors appeared to be involved in hepatic injury: feeding of fresh rape (Brassica napus) and high levels of serum urea (>/=6.64 mmol/L) associated with grass pasture or dietary nonprotein nitrogen with corn silage
