A multivariate approach to analyzing functional redundancy of marine periphytic ciliates during the colonization process for bioassessment in coastal ecosystems
2017
Xu, Guangjian | Zhong, Xiaoxiao | Warren, Alan | Xu, Henglong
Functional redundancy is a useful tool for determining functional compensation and for reducing “signal to noise” ratios of full-species datasets in community-based monitoring programs. The functional redundancy of marine periphytic ciliate communities during the colonization process in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, China, was analyzed using a peeling procedure (BVSTEP). Four response units (RUs) with trophic-functional equivalents were identified from the full 77-species dataset. These RUs, which comprised four, seven, six and six species respectively, represented a clear variation in trophic-functional structures across the levels of functional redundancy. RU1 was dominated by bacterivores, RU2 and RU3 first by bacterivores then by algivores, and RU4 first by non-selectives and bacterivores then by algivores. The colonization process and growth curve of each RU were significantly well-fitted to the MacArthur-Wilson and logistic models, respectively. These results suggest that RUs can be used as changeable trophic-functional equivalents for bioassessment in marine ecosystems.

2017
Federigi, Ileana | Verani, Marco | Carducci, Annalaura
This study was carried out in a popular tourist destination located in Italy, where short-term pollution posed the problem of low quality status of bathing waters (according to European Directive) owing to the fecal contamination caused by drainage ditches. Our goal was to understand the role of meteorological conditions on freshwater and seawater bacterial indicator levels, and the impact of polluted streams on seawater contamination. To this aim, results from surface waters were analyzed during five bathing seasons, from 2011 to 2015. Our results demonstrated a relationship between bacterial densities and rainfall amount and a time-dependent dilution effect of the sea between the two halves of each bathing season. This analytical survey confirmed the strategic role of meteorological variables in bathing waters quality, and it could be a support for generation and development of predicting models of indicator levels for bathing area.

2017
Alosairi, Yousef | Pokavanich, Tanuspong
Over the last several decades, concerns in the Northwest Arabian Gulf have risen regarding water quality and ecological conditions, particularly near Kuwait. This interest is mainly attributed to the reduction of freshwater discharge and its associated constituents from the Shatt Al Arab as a result of human activities at diverse scales. From the hydrological perspective, the reduction has also resulted in alteration to the dynamic regime and related residence time and transport conditions. Using a previously well-validated three-dimensional numerical model of the Northern Arabian Gulf (NAG) (Alosairi and Pokavanich, 2017), the residence and transport conditions of numerical tracers have been assessed through a series of numerical tests. The results indicate that density-driven circulations have played a key role in reducing the residence time in the Northwest Gulf by approximately 15% to 20% compared to tidal forces only. The transport conditions correlated well with the Shatt Al Arab discharges, but they were only significant along the Kuwait coast due to counter-clockwise circulations and alongshore currents. Arrival times and mixing processes varied reasonably with the Shatt Al Arab discharges; the results exhibited the enhancement in mixing and transport with increases in discharge. Residence times in the NAG associated with Shatt Al Arab discharge displayed spatial variations, particularly in Kuwait Bay, where the residence time increased by 60days during low discharge compared to high discharge.

2017
Khatmullina, Liliya | Isachenko, Igor
Terminal settling velocity of around 600 microplastic particles, ranging from 0.5 to 5mm, of three regular shapes was measured in a series of sink experiments: Polycaprolactone (material density 1131kgm−3) spheres and short cylinders with equal dimensions, and long cylinders cut from fishing lines (1130–1168kgm−3) of different diameters (0.15–0.71mm). Settling velocities ranging from 5 to 127mms−1 were compared with several semi-empirical predictions developed for natural sediments showing reasonable consistency with observations except for the case of long cylinders, for which the new approximation is proposed. The effect of particle's shape on its settling velocity is highlighted, indicating the need of further experiments with real marine microplastics of different shapes and the necessity of the development of reasonable parameterization of microplastics settling for proper modeling of their transport in the water column.

Fossil fuels, e.g. gasoline and diesel oil, account for substantial share of the pollution that affects marine ecosystems. Environmental metabolomics is an emerging field that may help unravel the effect of these xenobiotics on seaweeds and provide methodologies for biomonitoring coastal ecosystems. In the present study, FTIR and multivariate analysis were used to discriminate metabolic profiles of Ulva lactuca after in vitro exposure to diesel oil and gasoline, in combinations of concentrations (0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%, and 1.0% - v/v) and times of exposure (30min, 1h, 12h, and 24h). PCA and HCA performed on entire mid-infrared spectral window were able to discriminate diesel oil-exposed thalli from the gasoline-exposed ones. HCA performed on spectral window related to the protein absorbance (1700–1500cm−1) enabled the best discrimination between gasoline-exposed samples regarding the time of exposure, and between diesel oil-exposed samples according to the concentration. The results indicate that the combination of FTIR with multivariate analysis is a simple and efficient methodology for metabolic profiling with potential use for biomonitoring strategies.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), have been detected in abiotic Arctic matrices: surface sediments and seawater from coastal areas in the Kongsfjorden were collected and analyzed. Levels of PCBs varied depending on the sampling site. Total PCB concentrations were between 11.63 (site C2W) and 27.69pgl−1 (site AW). These levels were comparable to those reported previously in lake sediments from the northern Svalbard. The occurrence and biodegradation potential of cold-adapted PCB-oxidizing bacteria in seawater and sediment along the fjord was also evaluated. After enrichment with biphenyl, 246 isolates were obtained with 45 of them that were able to grow in the presence of the PCB mixture Aroclor 1242, as the sole carbon source. The catabolic gene bphA was harbored by 17 isolates with affiliates to the genera Algoriphagus, Devosia and Salinibacterium that have been never reported as able to utilize PCBs, thus deserving further investigation. The total removal of Aroclor 1242 and selected PCB congeners was evaluated at 4 and 15°C for eight bphA-harboring isolates and Gelidibacter sp. DS-10. With few exceptions, tested strains showed greater efficiency at 15 than at 4°C. Isolates were able to reduce most chromatographic peaks by >50%, with some di- and trichlorobiphenyls that were quite totally removed (>90%).

Meng, Long | Bao, Mutai | Sun, Peiyan
This study, adsorption behaviors of dispersed oil in seawaters by granular materials were explored in simulation environment. We quantitatively demonstrated the dispersed oil adsorbed by granular materials were both dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons (DPHs) and oil droplets. Furthermore, DPHs were accounted for 42.5%, 63.4%, and 85.2% (35.5% was emulsion adsorption) in the adsorption of dispersed oil by coastal rocks, sediments, and bacterial strain particles respectively. Effects of controlling parameters, such as temperature, particle size and concentration on adsorption of petroleum hydrocarbons were described in detail. Most strikingly, adsorption concentration was followed a decreasing order of bacterial strain (0.5–2μm)>sediments (0.005–0.625mm)>coastal rocks (0.2–1cm). With particle concentration or temperature increased, adsorption concentration increased for coastal rocks particle but decreased for sediments particle. Besides, particle adsorption rate of petroleum hydrocarbons (n-alkanes and PAHs) was different among granular materials during 60 days.

China is the world's largest mariculture producer. However, there is limited detailed information on organic matter distribution generated by mariculture in China. This study assessed the total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N) in surface sediments from Zhelin Bay in South China. TOC, TN, δ13C and δ15N ranged from 0.46–1.23%, 0.08–0.20%, −22.07 to −21.13‰ and 5.28–7.14‰, respectively, and followed similar spatial patterns. The C/N ratio coupled with isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N), indicates that the TOC originated from both terrestrial and marine sources. In general, surface sediments of Zhelin Bay were dominated by marine derived organic carbon; this form of carbon was separately calculated based on δ13C-based two end-member mixing and C/N ratio models.

Gioda, Adriana | Oliveira, Rafael C.G. | Cunha, Camilla L. | Corrêa, Sergio M.
This study was to evaluate the influence of vehicular emissions on two islands located in the Guanabara Bay, Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro city, one of them without the presence of vehicles (Paquetá Island - PI) and another with a considerable fleet (Governador Island - GI). The data used correspond to the hourly averages of the years 2012 and 2013 for nitrogen oxides (NOx, NO2 and NO), ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), total hydrocarbons (THC), aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX), as well as meteorological data. To interpret the results, a multivariate statistic was used in order to characterize the impact of the vehicle fleet on air quality. The results showed that CO and NOx levels were 2–6 times higher in GI than PI. On the other hand, THC levels were similar at both sites. Surprisingly, O3 levels were up to 1.5 times greater in PI than in GI. The possible explanation for these higher levels is related to the formation process from THC and NOx in the presence of sunlight. The THC/NOx and NOx/NO ratios for PI are much higher than those found for GI, thus explaining the high ozone values for a location with virtually no vehicle fleet and industrial activities. The benzene, toluene and xylene levels at both sites were of the same magnitude order, however, ethyl benzene was about 7-fold higher in PI.

The ingestion of microplastics by five natural zooplankton groups in the northern South China Sea was studied for the first time and two types of sampling nets (505μm and 160μm in mesh size) were compared. The microplastics were detected in zooplankton sampled from 16 stations, with the fibrous microplastics accounting for the largest proportion (70%). The main component of the found microplastics was polyester. The average length of the microplastics was 125μm and 167μm for Nets I and II, respectively. The encounter rates of microplastics/zooplankton increased with trophic levels. The average encounter rate of microplastics/zooplankton was 5%, 15%, 34%, 49%, and 120% for Net I, and 8%, 21%, 47%, 60%, and 143% for Net II for copepods, chaetognaths, jellyfish, shrimp, and fish larvae, respectively. The average abundance of microplastics that were ingested by zooplankton was 4.1pieces/m3 for Net I and 131.5pieces/m3 for Net II.
