Recovering phosphorus (P) from waste streams takes the unique advantage in simultaneously addressing the crisis of eutrophication and the shortage of P resource. A novel calcium decorated sludge carbon (Ca-SC) was developed from dyeing industry wastewater treatment sludge by decorating calcium (Ca) to effectively adsorb phosphorus from solution. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques were used to characterize the Ca-SCs, followed by isotherm and kinetic sorption experiments. A preferred design with CaCO₃ to sludge mass ratio of 1:2 was found to have a sorption capacity of 116.82 mg/g for phosphorus. This work reveals the crucial role of well-dispersed nano-rod calcium on the Ca-SC surface for the sorption of phosphorus. Moreover, the decoration of nano-rod calcium was found to further promote the uptake of phosphorus through the formation of hydroxylapatite (Ca₅(PO₄)₃(OH)). Thus, the development of decorated Ca-SC for sorption of phosphorus is very important in solving the P pollution and resource loss.

The occurrence and transportation of antibiotics in biofilms from natural and engineered sources have attracted increasing interests. Nevertheless, the effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the responses of biofilms to the exposure to antibiotics are not clear. In this study, the effects of EPS on the sorption and biological responses to one representative antibiotic, sulfamethizole (STZ), in model biofilms were investigated. Proteins dominated the interactions between the EPS and the STZ and the EPS from a moving bed biofilm reactor exhibited the strongest interaction with the STZ. The EPS served as important reservoirs for the STZ and the tested biofilms all showed reduced sorption capacities for the STZ after the EPS were extracted. The respiratory rates and typical enzymatic activities were reduced after the EPS were extracted. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing results confirmed that the bacterial community in the biofilm without the EPS was more vulnerable to antibiotic shock as indicated by the community diversity and richness indices. A greater increase in the abundance of susceptible species was observed in the natural biofilm. The results comprehensively suggested that the EPS played important role in biosorption of STZ and alleviated the direct damage of the antibiotic to the cells; in addition the extent of the bacterial community response was associated with the origins of the biofilms. Our study provided details on the responses of multi-species biofilms to the exposure to an antibiotic and highlighted the role of the EPS in interacting with the antibiotic, thereby providing a deeper understanding of the bioremediation of antibiotics in real-life natural and engineered biofilm systems.

The problem of effective assessment of risk posed by complex mixtures of toxic chemicals in the environment is a major challenge for government regulators and industry. The biological effect of the individual contaminants, where these are known, can be measured; but the problem lies in relating toxicity to the multiple constituents of contaminant cocktails. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that diverse contaminant mixtures may cause a greater toxicity than the sum of their individual parts, due to synergistic interactions between contaminants with different intracellular targets. Lysosomal membrane stability in hemocytes from marine mussels was used for in vitro toxicity tests; and was coupled with analysis using the isobole method and a linear additive statistical model. The findings from both methods have shown significant emergent synergistic interactions between environmentally relevant chemicals (i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, biocides and a surfactant) when exposed to isolated hemocytes as a mixture of 3 & 7 constituents. The results support the complexity-based hypothesis that emergent toxicity occurs with increasing contaminant diversity, and raises questions about the validity of estimating toxicity of contaminant mixtures based on the additive toxicity of single components. Further experimentation is required to investigate the potential for interactive effects in mixtures with more constituents (e.g., 50–100) at more environmentally realistic concentrations in order to test other regions of the model, namely, very low concentrations and high diversity. Estimated toxicant diversity coupled with tests for lysosomal damage may provide a potential tool for determining the toxicity of estuarine sediments, dredge spoil or contaminated soil.

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is the most abundant toxicant among microcystin variants produced by cyanobacteria. MC-induced toxicity is broadly reported to pose a threat to aquatic animals and humans and has been associated with the dysfunction of some organs such as liver and kidney. However, MC-induced neurotoxicity has not been well characterized after long-term exposure. This study was designed to investigate the neurotoxic effects after chronic oral administration of MC-LR. In our trial, C57/BL6 mice received MC-LR at 0, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 40 μg/L in drinking water for twelve months. Our data demonstrated that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage was evident in the damaged neurons as a result of chronic exposure. Histopathological abnormalities and mtDNA damage were observed in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. Furthermore, MC-LR exerted distinct effects on these two brain regions. The hippocampus was more susceptible to the treatment of MC-LR compared with the cerebral cortex. However, no strong relationships were observed between the genotoxic effects and exposure doses. In conclusion, this study has provided a mtDNA-related mechanism for underlying chronic neurotoxicity of MC-LR and suggested the presence of differential toxicant effects on the hippocampus and cerebral cortex.

1,4-Dioxane is a probable human carcinogen and an emerging contaminant that has been detected in surface water and groundwater resources. Many conventional water treatment technologies are not effective for the removal of 1,4-dioxane due to its high water solubility and chemical stability. Biological degradation is a potentially low-cost, energy-efficient approach to treat 1,4-dioxane-contaminated waters. Two bacterial strains, Pseudonocardia dioxanivorans CB1190 (CB1190) and Mycobacterium austroafricanum JOB5 (JOB5), have been previously demonstrated to break down 1,4-dioxane through metabolic and co-metabolic pathways, respectively. However, both CB1190 and JOB5 have been primarily studied in laboratory planktonic cultures, while most environmental microbes grow in biofilms on surfaces. Another treatment technology, adsorption, has not historically been considered an effective means of removing 1,4-dioxane due to the contaminant's low Koc and Kow values. We report that the granular activated carbon (GAC), Norit 1240, is an adsorbent with high affinity for 1,4-dioxane as well as physical dimensions conducive to attached bacterial growth. In abiotic batch reactor studies, 1,4-dioxane adsorption was reversible to a large extent. By bioaugmenting GAC with 1,4-dioxane-degrading microbes, the adsorption reversibility was minimized while achieving greater 1,4-dioxane removal when compared with abiotic GAC (95–98% reduction of initial 1,4-dioxane as compared to an 85–89% reduction of initial 1,4-dioxane, respectively). Bacterial attachment and viability was visualized using fluorescence microscopy and confirmed by amplification of taxonomic genes by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and an ATP assay. Filtered samples of industrial wastewater and contaminated groundwater were also tested in the bioaugmented GAC reactors. Both CB1190 and JOB5 demonstrated 1,4-dioxane removal greater than that of the abiotic adsorbent controls. This study suggests that bioaugmented adsorbents could be an effective technology for 1,4-dioxane removal from contaminated water resources.

Biochars are being increasingly applied in soil for carbon sequestration, fertility improvement, as well as contamination remediation. Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) pretreatment is a method for biochar modification, but the mechanism is not yet fully understood. In this work, biochars and the raw biomass were treated by H3PO4 prior to pyrolysis. Due to an acid catalysis and crosslink, the micropores of the pretreated particles were much more than those without H3PO4 pretreatment, resulting in the dramatical enhancement of specific surface areas of the pretreated particles. Crystalline cellulose (CL) exhibited a greater advantage in the formation of micropores than of amorphous lignin (LG) with H3PO4 modification. The formation mechanisms of micropores were: (a) H+ from H3PO4 contributes to micropores generation via H+ catalysis process; (b) the organic phosphate bridge protected the carbon skeleton from micropore collapse via the crosslinking of phosphate radical. The sorption capacities to carbamazepine (CBZ) and bisphenol A (BPA) increased after H3PO4 modification, which is ascribed to the large hydrophobic surface areas and more abundant micropores. Overall, H3PO4 pretreatment produced biochars with large surface area and high abundance of porous structures. Furthermore, the H3PO4 modified biochars can be applied as high adsorbing material as well as P-rich fertilizer.

2018
Gouveia, Nelson | Junger, Washington Leite
Air pollution is an important public health concern especially for children who are particularly susceptible. Latin America has a large children population, is highly urbanized and levels of pollution are substantially high, making the potential health impact of air pollution quite large. We evaluated the effect of air pollution on children respiratory mortality in four large urban centers: Mexico City, Santiago, Chile, and Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.Generalized Additive Models in Poisson regression was used to fit daily time-series of mortality due to respiratory diseases in infants and children, and levels of PM10 and O3. Single lag and constrained polynomial distributed lag models were explored. Analyses were carried out per cause for each age group and each city. Fixed- and random-effects meta-analysis was conducted in order to combine the city-specific results in a single summary estimate. These cities host nearly 43 million people and pollution levels were above the WHO guidelines. For PM10 the percentage increase in risk of death due to respiratory diseases in infants in a fixed effect model was 0.47% (0.09–0.85). For respiratory deaths in children 1–5 years old, the increase in risk was 0.58% (0.08–1.08) while a higher effect was observed for lower respiratory infections (LRI) in children 1–14 years old [1.38% (0.91–1.85)]. For O3, the only summarized estimate statistically significant was for LRI in infants. Analysis by season showed effects of O3 in the warm season for respiratory diseases in infants, while negative effects were observed for respiratory and LRI deaths in children. We provided comparable mortality impact estimates of air pollutants across these cities and age groups. This information is important because many public policies aimed at preventing the adverse effects of pollution on health consider children as the population group that deserves the highest protection.

A special initiative in the Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) Network was implemented to provide information on new and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Group of Latin America and Caribbean (GRULAC) region. Regional-scale atmospheric concentrations of the new and emerging POPs hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD), pentachloroanisole (PCA) and dicofol indicators (breakdown products) are reported for the first time. HCBD was detected in similar concentrations at all location types (<20–120 pg/m³). PCA had elevated concentrations at the urban site Concepción (Chile) of 49–222 pg/m³, with concentrations ranging <1–8.5 pg/m³ at the other sites in this study. Dicofol indicators were detected at the agricultural site of Sonora (Mexico) at concentrations ranging 30–117 pg/m³. Legacy POPs, including a range of organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), were also monitored to compare regional atmospheric concentrations over a decade of monitoring under the GAPS Network. γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and the endosulfans significantly decreased (p < 0.05) from 2005 to 2015, suggesting regional levels are decreasing. However, there were no significant changes for the other legacy POPs monitored, likely a reflection of the persistency and slow decline of environmental levels of these POPs. For the more volatile OCs, atmospheric concentrations derived from polyurethane foam (PUF) (acting as an equilibrium sampler) and sorbent impregnated PUF (SIP) (acting as a linear phase sampler), were compared. The complimentary methods show a good agreement of within a factor of 2–3, and areas for future studies to improve this agreement are further discussed.

Long-term genotoxic effects of two auxinic herbicide formulations, namely, the 58.4% 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)-based DMA® and the 57.7% dicamba (DIC)-based Banvel® were evaluated on Cnesterodon decemmaculatus. Primary DNA lesions were analyzed by the single-cell gel electrophoresis methodology. Two sublethal concentrations were tested for each herbicide corresponding to 2.5% and 5% of the LC50₉₆ₕ values. Accordingly, fish were exposed to 25.2 and 50.4 mg/L or 41 and 82 mg/L for 2,4-D and DIC, respectively. Fish were continuously exposed for 28 days with replacement of test solutions every 3 days. Genotoxicity was evaluated in ten individuals from each experimental point at the beginning of the exposure period (0 day) and at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days thereafter. Results demonstrated for first time that 2,4-D-based formulation DMA® induced primary DNA strand breaks after 7–28 days exposure on C. decemmaculatus regardless its concentration. On the other hand, DIC-based formulation Banvel® exerted its genotoxic effect after exposure during 7–14 days and 7 days of 2.5 and 5% LC50₉₆ₕ, respectively. The present study represents the first evidence of primary DNA lesions induced by two widely employed auxinic herbicides on C. decemmaculatus, namely 2,4-D and DIC, following long-term exposure.

2018

Most cities in China experience frequent PM₂.₅ pollution, in relation to unfavorable planetary boundary layer (PBL) conditions. Partly due to the limited appropriate PBL observations, the explicit relationships between PBL structure/process and PM₂.₅ pollution in China are not yet clearly understood. Using the fine-resolution sounding measurements from 2014 to 2017, the relationships between boundary layer height (BLH) and PM₂.₅ pollution in China were systematically examined. Four regions of interest (ROIs) featured with dense population and heavy pollution were studied and compared, including Northeast China (NEC), North China Plain (NCP), East China (EC), and Sichuan Basin (SCB). From 2014 to 2017, the heaviest PM₂.₅ pollution happened in NCP with an annual average concentration of 84 μg m⁻³, followed by NEC (60 μg m⁻³), SCB (57 μg m⁻³), and EC (54 μg m⁻³). Correlation analyses revealed a significant anti-correlation between BLH and daily PM₂.₅ concentrations across China, independent of ROIs. During an annual cycle, the pollution was heaviest in winter, followed by fall and spring, and reached its minimum in summer. Such a seasonal variation of pollution was not only modulated by the emissions, but also the seasonal shifts of BLH. The low BLH in winter was often associated with strong near-surface thermal stability. Moreover, certain synoptic conditions in winter can exacerbate the pollution, leading to concurrent drops of BLH and synchronous increases of PM₂.₅ concentration in different cities of a ROI. In NCP and SCB, the mountainous terrains could further worsen the pollution by blocking effects and lee eddies.
