Economic development, population growth, industrialization, and urbanization dramatically increase urban water quality deterioration, and thereby endanger human life and health. However, there are not many efficient methods and techniques to monitor urban black and odorous water (BOW) pollution. Our research aims at identifying primary indicators of urban BOW through their spectral characteristics and differentiation. This research combined ground in-situ water quality data with ground hyperspectral data collected from main urban BOWs in Guangzhou, China, and integrated factorial data mining and machine learning techniques to investigate how to monitor urban BOW. Eight key water quality parameters at 52 sample sites were used to retrieve three latent dimensions of urban BOW quality by factorial data mining. The synchronically measured hyperspectral bands along with the band combinations were examined by the machine learning technique, Lasso regression, to identify the most correlated bands and band combinations, over which three multiple regression models were fitted against three latent water quality indicators to determine which spectral bands were highly sensitive to three dimensions of urban BOW pollution. The findings revealed that the many sensitive bands were concentrated in higher hyperspectral band ranges, which supported the unique contribution of hyperspectral data for monitoring water quality. In addition, this integrated data mining and machine learning approach overcame the limitations of conventional band selection, which focus on a limited number of band ratios, band differences, and reflectance bands in the lower range of infrared region. The outcome also indicated that the integration of dimensionality reduction with feature selection shows good potential for monitoring urban BOW. This new analysis framework can be used in urban BOW monitoring and provides scientific data for policymakers to monitor it.

Faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) are used for the assessment of faecal pollution and possible water quality deterioration. There is growing evidence that FIB used in temperate regions are not adequate and reliable to detect faecal pollution in tropical regions. Hence, this study evaluated the adequacy of FIB, including total coliforms (TC), Escherichia coli (EC), Enterococci (IEC), and Clostridium perfringens (CP) in the high-altitude, tropical country of Ethiopia. In addition to FIB, for microbial source tracking (MST), a ruminant-associated molecular marker was applied at different water types and altitudes, and faecal pollution risk mapping was conducted based on consensus FIB. The performances of the indicators were evaluated at 22 sites from different water types. The results indicate that EC cell enumeration and CP spore determination perform well for faecal contamination monitoring. Most of the sub-basins of Lake Tana were found to be moderately to highly polluted, and the levels of pollution were demonstrated to be higher in the rainy season than in the post-rainy season. Markers associated with ruminants (BacR) were identified in more than three quarters of the sites. Moderate to high levels of faecal pollution were found in most sub-basins, and the highest levels were found during the rainy season. A bacterial pollution risk map was developed for sub-basins of Lake Tana, including the un-gauged sub-basins. We demonstrate how bacterial pollution risk mapping can aid in improvements to water quality testing and reduce risk to the general population from stream bacteria.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) may transfer into the neonates through the placental transfer and via breastfeeding after the delivery, thus might be harmful to the infant. Sixty colostrum samples in the Yangtze River Region were collected to investigate the concentration, distribution pattern, and enantiomer characteristic of the PCB exposure. Among all samples, over 90% of pollutants were tetra-to hepta-chlorinated PCBs. The sum concentration of the PCB was 512 (IQR: 322–856) ng g⁻¹ lipid weight. Enantiomer fraction (EF) of PCB 95 and PCB 149 was found lower than the racemic value, while EFs of PCB 45 and PCB 136 were found higher and near-racemic state, respectively. The concentration pattern and enantiomeric properties of the PCBs indicated that the mothers from Mianyang had a recent exposure to PCBs. Among all samples, similar exposure and metabolic pathways of the PCB congeners were observed. PCB exposure showed no significant correlation with the birth outcome of the infants, but 43.3% of the infants have potential health risks via breastfeeding.

Selective removal of arsenic (As) is the key challenge for any of As removal mechanisms as this not only increases the efficiency of removal of the main As species (neutral As(III) and As(V) hydroxyl-anions) but also allows for a significant reduction of waste as it does not co-remove other solutes. Selective removal has a number of benefits: it increases the capacity and lifetime of units while lowering the cost of the process. Therefore, a sustainable selective mitigation method should be considered concerning the economic resources available, the ability of infrastructure to sustain water treatment, and the options for reuse and/or safe disposal of treatment residuals. Several methods of selective As removal have been developed, such as precipitation, adsorption and modified iron and ligand exchange. The biggest challenge in selective removal of As is the presence of phosphate in water which is chemically comparable with As(V). There are two types of mechanisms involved with As removal: Coulombic or ion exchange; and Lewis acid-base interaction. Solution pH is one of the major controlling factors limiting removal efficiency since most of the above-mentioned methods depend on complexation through electrostatic effects. The different features of two different As species make the selective removal process more difficult, especially under natural conditions. Most of the selective As removal methods involve hydrated Fe(III) oxides through Lewis acid-base interaction. Microbiological methods have been studied recently for selective removal of As, and although there have been only a small number of studies, the method shows remarkable results and indicates positive prospects for the future.

Overexpression of estrogen receptor β (ERβ) in endometrium contributes to endometriosis (EM) pathogenesis. Trimethylation of the H3 lysine (K) 4 (H3K4me3) in promoters is strongly correlated with gene expression. This study aimed to explore the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure on EM development from the perspective of the regulation of ERβ expression in eutopic endometrium via the H3K4me3-related epigenetic pathway. A mouse EM model was established to investigate the effects of BPA. Immortalized human normal endometrial stromal cells (iESCs) were cultured and treated with BPA to explore the underlying mechanism. Eutopic endometria from patients with or without EM were collected and analyzed. Results showed that BPA elevated ERβ expression in mouse eutopic endometrium and promoted lesion growth. BPA also promoted WD repeat domain 5 (WDR5) expression and upregulated H3K4me3 levels in the ERβ promoter and Exon 1. Further research indicated that WDR5 interacted with tet methylcytosine dioxygenase 2 (TET2), while BPA exposure enhanced the interaction between these two proteins, promoted the recruitment of the WDR5/TET2 complex to the ERβ promoter and Exon 1, and inhibited DNA methylation of CpG islands. The WDR5/TET2 interaction was essential for BPA-induced ERβ overexpression. Enhanced WDR5/TET2 interaction was also observed in eutopic endometria from EM patients. Further results showed that BPA upregulated WDR5 expression through the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER)-mediated PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway. In conclusion, our study suggests that BPA exposure promotes EM development by upregulating ERβ expression in eutopic endometrium via the WDR5/TET2-mediated epigenetic pathway.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is an important air pollutant that causes direct harms to the environment and human health. Ground NO₂ mapping with high spatiotemporal resolution is critical for fine-scale air pollution and environmental health research. We thus developed a spatiotemporal regression kriging model to map daily high-resolution (3-km) ground NO₂ concentrations in China using the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite retrievals and geographical covariates. This model combined geographically and temporally weighted regression with spatiotemporal kriging and achieved robust prediction performance with sample-based and site-based cross-validation R² values of 0.84 and 0.79. The annual mean and standard deviation of ground NO₂ concentrations from June 1, 2018 to May 31, 2019 were predicted to be 15.05 ± 7.82 μg/m³, with that in 0.6% of China’s area (10% of the population) exceeding the annual air quality standard (40 μg/m³). The ground NO₂ concentrations during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) period (January and February in 2020) was 14% lower than that during the same period in 2019 and the mean population exposure to ground NO₂ was reduced by 25%. This study was the first to use TROPOMI retrievals to map fine-scale daily ground NO₂ concentrations across all of China. This was also an early application to use the satellite-estimated ground NO₂ data to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the air pollution and population exposures. These newly satellite-derived ground NO₂ data with high spatiotemporal resolution have value in advancing environmental and health research in China.

Heavy metal pollution is an issue of wide concern owing to the toxic and bioaccumulative properties of many heavy metals and their tendencies to persist in the environment. The Haihe River is an important river in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, and heavy metal pollution of the basin has attracted considerable attention. This study determined the concentrations of 14 heavy metals (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, and Zn) in water, sediments, and fish samples from the Haihe River basin. The results showed that the concentrations ranged from 0.08 μg L⁻¹ to 60.49 μg L⁻¹ in water, 0.11 mg kg⁻¹ to 229.20 mg kg⁻¹ in sediments, and 0.01 mg kg⁻¹ to 11.72 mg kg⁻¹ in fish. We derived the ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) value of each heavy metal with respect to human health, and then performed a comprehensive risk assessment according to the native parameters. The human health AWQC values for the assessed 14 heavy metals ranged from 0.16 μg L⁻¹ to 726.53 μg L⁻¹. The health risks posed by As, Cr, Hg, and Sb and the ecological risks associated with Ni, Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd, Co, Hg, and Sn were found to be issues of concern. The results of a sensitivity analysis revealed that the highest contributing parameter was i) the concentration in water (Cw) for Cd, Co, Mn, Sb, and Sn; ii) the intake rate of water (IRw) for As, Ba, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Se; and iii) the concentration in fish (Cf) for Cu and Zn. The results of this research could contribute to the information required for water quality assessments and the development of water quality standards.

Cadmium (Cd), which is considered a carcinogenic metal, promotes breast cancer (BC) progression, but the precise mechanism remains unclear. Herein, MCF-7 and T47-D cells were treated with 0.1, 1, and 10 μM cadmium chloride (CdCl₂) for 24, 48 and 72 h. In our study, Cd exposure significantly accelerated the proliferation, migration and invasion of MCF-7 and T47-D cells. Notably, Cd inhibited autophagic flux by suppressing ATG5-dependent autophagosome formation but had no significant effect on autophagosome-lysosome fusion and lysosomal function. The genetic enhancement of autophagy through ATG5 overexpression suppressed the Cd-mediated increases in proliferation, migration and invasion, which indicated a carcinogenic role of autophagy impairment in Cd-exposed BC cells. GSEA and GeneMANIA were utilized to demonstrate that the Cd-induced decrease in ACSS2 expression mechanistically inhibited ATG5-dependent autophagy in BC cells. Importantly, ACSS2 overexpression increased the level of H3K27 acetylation in the promoter region of ATG5, and this result maintained autophagic flux and abolished the Cd-induced increases in proliferation, migration and invasion. We also verified that the expression of ACSS2 in BC tissues was low and positively related to ATG5 expression. These findings indicated that the promoting effect of Cd on BC cell proliferation, migration and invasion through the impairment of ACSS2/ATG5-dependent autophagic flux suggests a new mechanism for BC cell proliferation and metastasis stimulated by Cd.

The combined use of nano-TiO₂ with cementitious materials offers an environmentally-friendly way to combat the air pollution problem. However, a trade-off between a high efficiency and a robust weathering resistance has often to be made for most of the attempted nano-TiO₂ incorporation methods. This paper developed a simple and effective “spraying” method to coat nano-TiO₂ particles on the surface of concrete surface layers (CSL). The results showed that the NOₓ removal rate of the samples increased with an increase in both the concentrations of nano-TiO₂ solutions and the number of times of the spraying action. And the conditions for preparation of the Spray AB (the CSL were first sprayed with the 30 g L⁻¹ TiO₂-solution 20 times, followed by mechanical compaction, and for another 20 times after the compaction) were found to be optimal in terms of NOₓ removal performance and weathering resistance. The Spray AB was superior to the 5% TiO₂-intermixed samples with respect to photocatalytic NOₓ removal ability. Compared with TiO₂-dip-coated samples, the Spray AB samples had better and robust weathering resistance. A case study on the factory-fabricated green Eco-blocks (produced by the laboratory-developed spray method and the conventional intermix method) was performed. Examination and comparison on their respective photocatalytic NOₓ removal further verified the advantages of the spray method over the intermix method.

Recent studies suggests that air pollution, from among others road traffic, can influence growth and development of the human foetus during pregnancy. The effects of air pollution from heavy industry on birth outcomes have been investigated scarcely. Our aim was to investigate the associations of air pollution from heavy industry on birth outcomes.A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4488 singleton live births (2012–2017) in the vicinity of a large industrial area in the Netherlands. Information from the birth registration was linked with a dispersion model to characterize annual individual-level exposure of pregnant mothers to air pollutants from industry in the area. Associations between particulate matter (PM₁₀), nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), and volatile organic compounds (VOC) with low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), and small for gestational age (SGA) were investigated by logistic regression analysis and with gestational age, birth weight, birth length, and head circumference by linear regression analysis.Exposures to NOX, SO₂, and VOC (per interquartile range of 1.16, 0.42, and 0.97 μg/m³ respectively) during pregnancy were associated with LBW (OR 1.20, 95%CI 1.06–1.35, OR 1.20, 95%CI 1.00–1.43, and OR 1.21, 95%CI 1.08–1.35 respectively). NOX and VOC were also associated with PTB (OR 1.14, 95%CI 1.01–1.29 and OR 1.17, 95%CI 1.04–1.31 respectively). Associations between exposure to air pollution and birth weight, birth length, and head circumference were statistically significant. Higher exposure to PM₁₀, NOX, SO₂ and VOC (per interquartile range of 0.41, 1.16, 0.42, and 0.97 μg/m³ respectively) was associated with reduced birth weight of 21 g to 30 g.The 90th percentile industry-related PM₁₀ exposure corresponded with an average birth weight decrease of 74 g.
