Metal history in a natural system was described since the early Holocene by analysing the preserved subsurface sediment record and present-day surface sediments. Normalized geochemical data from six sediment cores (129 samples) was compared with 28 surface samples. Pre-anthropic sedimentary environments allowed the definition of local natural Background Values. Enrichment Factors were then used for elements discrimination in terms of natural and anthropogenic inputs to the system. While subsurface results displayed a similar behaviour in all cores, pointing to largely undisturbed system, surface sediments show significant contamination, with high enrichment factors for As, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Other metal pollutants have generally low enrichment values, suggesting natural conditions. Surface results were reproduced as metal enrichment maps which evidenced anthropogenic sources in specific locations. This work reveals the importance of combining subsurface and surface geochemical data with mapping techniques in order to better evaluate the environmental quality of a natural system.

Leads, Rachel R. | Weinstein, John E.
Microplastics (<5 mm) are ubiquitous in the marine environment, occurring in both sediments and surface waters worldwide. However, few studies have documented the presence of microplastics and tire wear particles in coastal rivers. A survey of microplastics and low-density tire wear particles (≥63 μm) in the sediment and surface water of the three major tributaries within the Charleston Harbor estuary was conducted. Intertidal sediment, subtidal sediment, and sea surface microlayer concentrations ranged from 0 to 652 microplastics/m², 3–4,375 microplastics/kg wet weight, and 3–36 microplastics/L, respectively. Blue fibers and tire wear particles were the two most abundant microplastic types observed, constituting 26.2% and 17.1%, respectively, of total microplastics. Tire wear particles were primarily identified by morphology, and ATR-FTIR analysis was conducted for a small subset (n = 5) of larger particles (≥500 μm). The present study provides the first microplastic field assessment of low-density tire wear particles in estuarine tributaries.

Pollution by microplastics (MPs) is currently a global problem in the coastal and marine environment. Transfer of MPs from land to sea and their inclusion in the food web has a significant adverse effect on the marine life and human health. The present study was carried out at the fishing harbour of Chennai, southeast coast of India. The possible MPs were isolated from the soft tissues of the commercially important bivalve Perna viridis and examined by microscopic and DXR Raman spectroscopic methods. The MPs were identified as to be polystyrene polymers in the soft tissues. This investigation revealed that size and color are the major factors affecting the bioavailability of MPs to bivalves in the study area. The presence of colorants in organisms revealed an anthropogenic origin through the use of a wide array of applications. Hence, coastal zones are a hotspot for pollution by MPs, and filter feeding bivalves are at the highest risk. Therefore, further studies are required to understand the accumulation rates and residence time of MPs across the food webs.

2019
La Colla, Noelia S. | Botté, Sandra E. | Marcovecchio, Jorge E.
This study evaluated -for the first time- the occurrence and distribution of total Hg in abiotic (dissolved and particulate water fractions) and biotic (gills and muscle tissues of six commercial fish species) compartments within a South American coastal environment with anthropogenic pressure. This study dealt with environmental issues on developing countries which, as they are in continuous growth, face the highest rate of coastal transformation.Total Hg content was determined by acid digestion and measured using a cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results revealed that dissolved Hg exceeded the recommended levels for superficial saline waters in 67% of the cases. Hg concentrations varied among fish species and its tissues. The results suggested that metal burden in fishes achieved a mean maximum accumulation towards the muscle, with concentrations below the international maximum permitted values. The estimated daily intakes calculated suggest that people would not experience significant health risks through fish consumption.

The origins of sediment organic matter (SOM) and their contributions were studied in three contrasting wetlands (mudflat, estuarine and mangrove) of Daya Bay, South China Sea. Lower sediment δ13C but higher δ15N values were observed in coastal wetland than in offshore water of the bay. Greater terrigenous organic matter (TOM) contribution to SOM was observed in lower tidal area in mudflat and estuarine wetland. Higher concentrations of total organic carbon and total nitrogen in the three wetlands, as well as lower sediment δ13C, were found in the wet season. Extremely lower sediment δ15N with higher seawater ammonia were observed in estuarine wetland than in mudflat and mangrove, which was caused by the input of 15N-depleted ammonia from petrochemical industrial wastewater. Mangrove contributed substantially to SOM, with a larger contribution in mangrove area than in non-mangrove area. The mean contribution of TOM to SOM was lower in mangrove than in mudflat.

Baseline concentration of total mercury (THg), organic extractable mercury and methylmercury (CH₃Hg) concentrations in sediments from the northeastern, eastern and southeastern parts of the Arabian Gulf were assessed. Surface sediments were collected from eleven stations from the coastal waters of Qatar. All analyses were performed on homogenised samples. Total mercury analysis was performed by Cold Vapour Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CVAAS), and methylmercury was analysed by Cold Vapour Atomic Fluorescence spectrometry (CVAFS) after aqueous phase ethylation of the extracted samples. Total mercury (THg) in sediments varied from 8.0 μg/kg to 34.3 μg/kg. Methylmercury was detected in all stations and ranged from 1.46 μg/kg to 3.10 μg/kg accounting for 5.4% to 18.4% of total mercury. Total organic carbon (TOC) ranged from 0.16 to 0.72%, while Organic extractable mercury ranged from 1.55 μg/kg to 13.3 μg/kg. Analysis, the grain size within these sediments, was carried out previously paving the way for studying the influence of these parameters on the sedimentary mercury concentration. Speciation was also assessed, as were relations between the measured mercury fractions.

In the present study, 13 endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and their transformation products (TPs) were monitored in Jiulong River and its estuary, China in different seasons. The analytes included antimicrobials [triclosan (TCS) and triclocarbon (TCC)]; estrogens [estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), estriol (E3) and ethinylestradiol (EE2)]; alkylphenol ethoxylates [4-n-nonylphenol (NP) and 4-n-octylphenol (OP)] and the TPs [methyl triclosan (MeTCS), carbanilide (NCC), dichlorocarbanilide, 4-hydroxy estrone (4-OH E1) and 4-hydroxy estradiol (4-OH E2)]. A significant seasonal variation was observed for most EDCs. Approximately, 79% of the total E2 residues were detected in the normal season in comparison with the wet season to indicate recalcitrant behavior of E2 during the normal season. Risk assessment revealed that E2 was most potent among the EDCs to cause highest risk to both vertebrate and invertebrate aquatic species, whereas, E1, EE2, MeTCS and TCS also showed relatively high risk for some surface water aquatic species.

2019
North Abu Ali Island is contaminated by crude oil from exogenous sources with a variety of persistent toxic substances (PTSs) being input into intertidal sediments. We detected an array of PTSs in sediments and benthic biota off north Abu Ali Island (Arabian Gulf), including 35 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 6 alkylphenols (APEOs), 10 styrene oligomers (SOs), and tributyltin. The PTS concentrations were generally greater than those reported in other areas of Arabian Gulf. PAHs mainly originated from petrogenic sources, and APEOs and SOs seem to be of recent origin. Field-based biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF) varied by taxa and compounds, but clearly depended on the log Kₒw values of individual compounds. Some PTSs exceeded the established guidelines for sediments and biota; we found particularly great BSAFs for alkyl-naphthalenes (C1- and C2-), nonylphenol monoethoxylates, and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene. Remediation will require on-site clean-up of toxic chemicals together with immediate efforts on preventing input of current pollution sources in the given area.

2019
We studied the bioaccumulation of metals and PAHs, the pathological conditions, regressive phenomena and pathogens in wild Mytilus galloprovincialis taken along the North Pier facing the former second Italian largest steelworks of Bagnoli. There was no Cd and Pb bioaccumulation with respect to the EU role 221/2002. Metal shell index decreased as follows: Pb > Ni > Zn > Cu and correlates with the pollution state. The level of BaP was up to thirtysixfold higher the EU rule 835/2011. The sum of 4 hydrocarbons, PAH4, were up to seventeen-fold the rule. PAH levels increased toward the coast. Prevalence values of tissue necrosis and inflammatory lesions were between 50 and 100%. In May animals showed lesion like granulocytomas and inflammatory capsules. Signs of atresia, necrotic oocytes and diffused cases of hermaphroditism were detected. An appropriate localization of farming to avoid contamination from sediment turbulence and risks for consumer health is needed.

2019
Heavy metal pollution is a serious environmental problem. Up to date, research regarding distribution, accumulation and potential risk assessment of metals in aquatic organisms in Laizhou Bay, China is scarce. This study aims to investigate metals in aquatic organisms in this region. The results demonstrated that great variability of metals content occurred among species and sampling locations. Fe was the most abundant metal, followed by Zn, Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd and Pb. Overall, shellfish and crab displayed high enrichment ability compared with fish and shrimp. There was no significant correlation between metals and samples weight, δ13C and δ15N values. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that metals in samples were mainly derived from anthropogenic activities. Health risk of metals was evaluated on the basis of estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) values. The results indicated that metals in studied seafood had no significant risks for ordinary consumers.
