Investigating PPCP Removal from Wastewater by Powdered Activated Carbon/Ultrafiltration

Powdered activated carbon/ultrafiltration (PAC/UF) hybrid process was investigated for removing from wastewater five pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs): 1-H-benzotriazole, DEET, chlorophene, 3-methylindole and nortriptyline-HCl. Adsorption, UF and PAC/UF experiments were performed, focusing on PPCP adsorption as a function of PPCP characteristics and organic matter (EfOM) competition. Two water matrices and two fine-particle PACs were studied, differing on EfOM nature and concentration and on PAC microporosity. Neutral PPCP uptake by the positively charged, meso- and microporous PACs followed PPCP hydrophobicity expressed by log Kₒw. The uptake of the positively charged nortriptyline exceeded the expected from log D due to its high aromaticity and the background ions, which partially shielded PAC-nortriptyline electrostatic repulsions. Adsorption capacity depended on PPCP hydrophobicity whereas the kinetics further depended on PPCP charge. Hydrophobic EfOM was preferentially adsorbed and a stronger competitor, particularly for PPCPs with logKₒw < 2.6. The highly microporous PAC better adsorbed these PPCPs and the hydrophobic EfOM, and it attenuated the EfOM competition. For all waters, PAC had no effect on UF-flux, and it significantly improved PPCP and EfOM removal by PAC/UF over standalone PAC and UF. For all conditions and microcontaminants, PPCP uptake exhibited a sigmoid curve with logKₒw, with a turning point at 2.2–2.6. In real applications, meso- and highly microporous PACs are recommended, and the dose should target the PPCPs with log Kₒw < 2.6.

Microcystis aeruginosa is a common cause of algal bloom outbreaks in Chinese lakes. This study investigated the effects of phosphate loading on the algal growth and extracellular organic matter (EOM) production of M. aeruginosa. The cell density was monitored by cell counting, and EOMs were characterized by dissolved organic carbon (DOC), carbohydrate, protein, and excitation/emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM). DOC concentration peaked during the stationary phase and was contributed primarily by amino acid- and fulvic-like substances. Carbohydrate was a substantially larger fraction than protein. Phosphate showed positive influence on the cell growth and EOMs. As its concentration increased, the EOMs concentration increased. So did EOM and β-ionone as typical taste and odor compounds. Whatever the phosphate concentration was, the peak of β-ionone concentration exceeded its odor threshold (7.0 ng/L), resulting in a severe fruit-like odor. Additionally, the disinfection by-products involved with EOM were evaluated in both chlorination and chloramination, indicating that trihalomethanes were the dominated toxic by-products and the chloramination showed more significant effect on its formation as an interesting result.

This research work evaluates the use of hydrogen peroxide for the removal of cyanide from coking wastewater deriving from the washing of gases in coal combustion furnace. The effect of the presence or absence of suspended solids and organic micropollutants on the efficiency of the treatment is analyzed. Various dosages of hydrogen peroxide (6.5–200 mg/L) were added to both aqueous solution (at pH 10.5) and industrial wastewater (at pH 10.3) samples. The influence of suspended solids in coking wastewater was analyzed by applying a coagulation–flocculation–decantation process before the hydrogen peroxide treatment. The preliminary cyanide removal treatment in aqueous solution showed that the maximum cyanide removal did not exceed 14 % using a mass ratio of hydrogen peroxide to cyanide of 11.6. The maximum cyanide removal obtained in coking wastewater was 47 % with a mass ratio of hydrogen peroxide to cyanide of 12.2 provided that a coagulation–flocculation–decantation pretreatment was applied to remove the suspended solids composed mainly of coal, calcium carbonate, and magnesium carbonate. On the other hand, the cyanide removal treatment in coking wastewater with hydrogen peroxide showed promising results in the removing of different organic micropollutants formed mainly by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and quinolines.

The operation of modern vehicles requires the introduction of package of fuel additives to ensure the required level of operating characteristics, some of which cannot be achieved by current oil refining methods. The use of additives allows flexibility of impact on the properties of the fuel at minimal cost, increasing the efficiency and environmental safety of vehicles. Among the wide assortment of additives available on the world market, many are surfactants. It has been shown that the introduction of some surfactants into gasoline concurrently reduces losses from gasoline evaporation, improves the mixture formation during injection of gasoline into the engine and improves detergent and anticorrosive properties. The surfactant gasoline additive that provides significant improvement in the quality of gasoline used and environmental and operating characteristics of vehicles has been developed and thoroughly investigated. The results of studies confirming the efficiency of the gasoline additive application are herein presented.

The rapid increase in anthropogenic nitrogen (N) load in urbanized environment threatens urban sustainability. In this study, we estimated the amount of reactive N (Nr) as an index of N pollution potential caused by human activities, using the megacity of Beijing as a case study. We investigated the temporal changes in Nr emissions in the environment from 2000 to 2012 using a multidisciplinary approach with quantitative evaluation. The Nr emissions presented slightly increasing during study period, and the annual emission was 0.19 Tg N, mainly resulting from fuel combustion. Nevertheless, the Nr output intensity resulting from inhabitants’ livelihoods and material production had weakened over the study period. The evaluation results showed that the environmental measures to remove Nr in Beijing were efficient in most years, suggesting that progress in mitigating the growth of the Nr load in this urban environment was significant. Further measures based on N offset are suggested that could help alleviate the environmental pressure resulting from anthropogenic Nr emissions. These could provide theoretical support for the sustainable development of megacities.

Pilot scale thin film plate reactors (TFPR) were fabricated to study the solar photocatalytic treatment of wastewater obtained from the secondary treatment plant of a sugar refinery. Silver-impregnated titanium dioxide (TiO₂) was prepared by a facile chemical reduction method, characterized, and immobilized onto the surface of ceramic tiles used in the pilot scale reactors. On 8 h of solar irradiation, percentage reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the wastewater by Ag/TiO₂, pure TiO₂, and control (without catalyst) TFPR was about 95, 86, and 22 % respectively. The effects of operational parameters such as, flow rate, pH, and addition of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) were optimized as they influence the rate of COD reduction. Under 3 h of solar irradiation, 99 % COD reduction was observed at an optimum flow rate of 15 L h⁻¹, initial pH of 2, and addition of 5 mM of H₂O₂. The results show that Ag/TiO₂ TFPR could be effectively used for the tertiary treatment of sugar refinery effluent using sunlight as the energy source. A soil column leaching experiment was conducted to eliminate heavy metals from reclaimed tidal flat soil. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum was used for leaching. The highest removal rates of Cd and Pb in the upper soil layers (0–30 cm) were 52.7 and 30.5 %, respectively. Most of the exchangeable and carbonate-bound Cd and Pb were removed. The optimum FGD gypsum application rate was 7.05 kg·m⁻², and the optimum leaching water amount for the application was 217.74 L·m⁻². The application of FGD gypsum (two times) and the extension of the leaching interval time to 20 days increased the heavy metal removal rate in the upper soil layers. The heavy metals desorbed from the upper soil layers were re-adsorbed and fixed in the 30–70 cm soil layers.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are one of the most marketable nanomaterials worldwide. Their increasing production and their market insertion will deliver AgNP to the environment, exacerbating their human and environmental impacts. This review discusses the main techniques to synthesize AgNP, their properties, applications, and the cutting-edge knowledge on the effects of AgNP on human and environmental health. Through an identification of papers reporting AgNP until the beginning of 2016 in “ISI Web of Science,” and running different combinations of keywords or search strings, we identified six toxicological factors with a clear hazard potential to workers and consumers. A grading system is proposed to rank and evaluate toxicological properties of AgNP, which can be useful in supplying assistance on the classification of the priorities and concerns in the regulatory and standardization policies of the occupational health and safety issues on nanomaterials.

The previous studies indicated that Tychonema-like strains from Lake Erhai could release geosmin so that the species was listed as the potential harmful cyanobacteria influencing the drinking water safety around Lake Erhai. But, the dynamics and biological information of this species were too limited. In this study, the polyphasic approach was used to reveal its biological characterization and the dynamics in Lake Erhai. The characters of trichomes, including filaments with solitary or bundle state, reddish-brown or blue-green color, planktonic habitat, and presence of keritomized content, were examined by the microscopic method. The 16S rDNA sequences of these strains were used for phylogenetic analysis and molecular identification. The strains were morphologically classified as Tychonema bourrellyi, and geosmin and β-ionone were identified as the major volatile substances using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. No strains of T. bourrellyi were found to produce microcystin by the HPLC and mcy gene approaches. Cell numbers at 12 sampling sites in Lake Erhai were shown as an average of 3 × 10⁴ cells L⁻¹ in 2009 and 2010. The obvious peaks occurred in July and August each year. This was the first report on occurrence of T. bourrellyi from outside of Europe, and T. bourrellyi was also a newly recorded species in China. Such a result demonstrated that T. bourrellyi could distribute extending from cold waters in North Europe to the warm waters in subtropical regions. It was interesting to observe the coincidence of the occurrence of T. bourrellyi with slightly eutrophicated waters since Lake Erhai had been regarded as an early phase of eutrophicated lake.

The bioconcentration potential of fluoxetine (FLX) and its biological effects were investigated in juvenile Pacific oyster exposed for 28 days to environmentally relevant concentrations of FLX (1 ng L⁻¹, 100 ng L⁻¹ and up to 10 μg L⁻¹). FLX bioaccumulated in oyster flesh resulting in 28-day bioconcentration factors greater than 2,000 and 10,000 by referring to wet and dry weights, respectively. Nevertheless, FLX did not induce oyster mortality, delayed gametogenesis, or lead to adverse histopathological alterations. At the two highest concentrations, despite non-optimal trophic conditions, FLX stimulated shell growth but only in a transient manner, suggesting a role of serotonin in the regulation of feeding and metabolism in bivalves. Those high concentrations seemed to drive bell-shaped responses of catalase and glutathione S-transferase activities throughout the exposure period, which may indicate the activation of antioxidant enzyme synthesis and then an enhanced catabolic rate or direct inhibition of those enzymes. However, no clear oxidative stress was detected because no strong differences in thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) content (i.e. lipid peroxidation) were observed between oyster groups, suggesting that cellular defence mechanisms were effective. These results demonstrate the importance of considering additional biomarkers of oxidative stress to obtain a comprehensive overview of the FLX-induced changes in marine bivalves exposed under realistic conditions. Considering the battery of biomarkers used, FLX appears to induce little or no effects on oyster physiology even at a concentration of 10 μg L⁻¹. These results do not confirm the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) values reported by some authors in other mollusc species.
