Study on seasonal hydrology and biogeochemical variability in a tropical estuarine system, Central Mozambique Coast, Africa Полный текст
2018
Miguel, Lucas Lavo António Jimo
Little is known about the dynamics of particulate inorganic and organic matter in brackish water controlled by tidal prism and seasonal river discharges in Macuse estuary, on central Mozambique coast, southern Africa. This manuscript illustrates seasonal variation of biogeochemical flow dynamics in a tropical estuarine system in Zambézia province. The data were collected at 42 stations, including tidal current measurements with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, tidal elevation with a tidal-gauge and nitrate, silicate (SiO2), dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll-a with a photometer device system and tidal currents with multisensory instrument device (Current, Temperature and Depth device). These field data helped to calibrate a twelve months simulation of a 3D Computational Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics Model (3D CAEDM) in 2014. The results emphasize a tidal elevation of 4-m height that generated tidal currents of 120 cm/s. They combination with seasonal runoff of ~500 m3/s from Namacurra River and averaged bathymetry morphology of 10-m depth, led on to the seasonal concentration flux of dissolved oxygen, nitrate, SiO2 and chlorophyll-a during the ebbing and flooding. In addition, the river discharges were found to be the main source of nitrate and SiO2, while the tidal prism led on the hydrological flow of the brackish-waters during the rainy season with maximum salinity anomaly of 16%. Besides the data obtained, the 3D model matches in reproducing the biogeochemical data flow have considerable potential possess of a valuable information in long- and short-term and large- and small-scale that may allow policy-makers to determine political decisions for bio-conservation, sustainability and coastal management.

Storm-driven transport of MC252 oil, sand and shell aggregates was studied on a low-relief coastal headland beach in Louisiana, USA including measurement of alkylated PAHs and Illumina sequencing of intra-aggregate microbial populations. Weathering ratios, constructed from alkylated PAH data, were used to assess loss of 3-ring phenanthrenes and dibenzothiophenes relative to 4-ring chrysenes. Specific aggregate types showed relatively little weathering of 3-ring PAHs referenced to oil sampled near the Macondo wellhead with the exception of certain SRBs sampled from the supratidal environment and samples from deposition areas north of beach. Aggregates mobilized by these storm-driven washover events contains diverse microbial populations dominated by the class Gammaproteobacteria including PAH-degrading genera such as Halomonas, Marinobacter and Idiomarina. Geochemical assessment of porewater in deposition areas, weathering observations, and microbial data suggest that storm remobilization can contribute to susceptibility of PAHs to biodegradation by moving oil to beach microenvironments with more favorable characteristics. Wu, Junwen
After the Fukushima nuclear accident (FNA), ¹³⁷Cs activities of seawater in the Western North Pacific (WNP) and China Seas were determined in order to examine whether ¹³⁷Cs derived from FNA across the Kuroshio was still existed and if there were any indications of FNA's impact. High ¹³⁷Cs activities at 200–500m were observed in the south of Kuroshio during 2015, indicating ¹³⁷Cs from FNA could cross the Kuroshio. Surface ¹³⁷Cs activities were on average 1.43±0.42Bqm⁻³ for WNP, 1.11±0.14Bqm⁻³ for South China Sea (SCS) and 1.10±0.29Bqm⁻³ for East China Sea (ECS) during 2011–2015. The activities and inventories of ¹³⁷Cs were almost identical before and after the FNA, indicating the impacts of FNA on the WNP and China Seas were minor. The effective environmental half-lives of ¹³⁷Cs in surface seawater were firstly estimated to be 14.4±1.7yrs for ECS and 16.9±2.1yrs for SCS.

Given scarcity of knowledge on gender ecophysiological responses of tropical marine organisms to global climate change, the major aim of this research was to investigate potential sex differences in oxidative status of topshell Trochus histrio, after a combined exposure to increased temperature and pCO2. Lipid peroxidation, heat-shock response and antioxidant enzymatic activities were evaluated. Lipid peroxidation varied differently between sexes, with males undergoing cellular damage under high pCO2, which was elevated temperature-counteracted. Heat shock response was thermo- and sex-regulated, with males exhibiting significantly higher heat shock proteins production than females. Catalase activity increased with temperature and was exacerbated in combination with hypercapnia, being highest in females, while glutathione S-transferases activity peaked in males. These results clearly support the existence of distinct physiological strategies to cope oxidative stress between sexes, apparently more efficient in females, and also reinforce for the need of encompassing sex as meaningful variable in future biomarker studies.

A combined approach merging stable isotopes and fatty acids was applied to study anthropogenic pollution in the Río Negro estuary. Fatty acid markers of vegetal detritus indicated considerable allochthonous inputs at freshwater sites. Correlative evidence of diatom fatty acids, δ13C, chlorophyll and particulate organic matter suggested the importance of diatoms for the autochthonous organic matter production at the river mouth. Low δ15N values (~0‰) and high fatty acid 18:1(n-7) concentrations in the suspended particulate matter, in combination with the peaks of coliforms and ammonium, indicated a strong impact of untreated sewage discharge. The 15N depletion was related to oxygen-limited ammonification processes and incorporation of 15N depleted ammonium to microorganisms. This work demonstrates that the combined use of lipid and isotopic markers can greatly increase our understanding of biogeochemical factors and pollutants influencing estuaries, and our findings highlight the urgent need for water management actions to reduce eutrophication.

The effects of enclosed, semi-closed, and opened reclamation methods on the macrobenthos community structure were investigated. Compared with their paired controls, water salinity decreased sharply in the enclosed reclamation region with no apparent change in the opened reclamation region. Declining species and biodiversity was observed in the reclamation regions, but the extent of this declining trend was weaker in the semi-closed and opened reclamations than in the enclosed reclamation region. The ABC curve indicated that the enclosed reclamation was disturbed, whereas the semi-closed and opened reclamations were undisturbed. Taken together, these results suggest that reclamation may have a negative effect on the community and health status of macrobenthos in the intertidal wetlands of the Yangtze Estuary. Semi-closed and opened reclamation methods may mitigate the problem of a salinity decrease caused by enclosed reclamation, while also having a relatively weaker negative effect on community structure and wetland habitat.

This study determines uptake and accumulation of radionuclides and heavy metals by Pluchea indica and Avicennia marina and evaluates phytoremediation potential via greenhouse and field experiments. P. indica and A. marina are considered excluders for ⁴⁰K and ²⁶²Ra, and Pb since roots accumulated them in higher quantities compared to other plant parts, and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and transfer factor (TF) values for Pb, and ⁴⁰K and ²⁶²Ra were >1, respectively. Absorbed dose rate in air (D) showed significant values in sediments, which were generally over the maximum recommended value of 55nGyh⁻¹. Phytostabilization of radionuclides and heavy metals may serve as an appropriate strategy for mangrove-polluted areas. D values in sediments were considered sufficiently high to recommend long-term monitoring. Radionuclide activities may increase in the food chain via uptake and accumulation of edible plants, ultimately resulting in harm to human health.

Trace element accumulation is an anthropogenic threat to seagrass ecosystems, which in turn may affect the health of humans who depend on these ecosystems. Trace element accumulation in seagrass meadows may vary temporally due to, e.g., seasonal patterns in sediment discharge from upstream areas. In addition, when several trace elements are present in sufficiently high concentrations, the risk of seagrass loss due to the cumulative impact of these trace elements is increased. To assess the seasonal variation and cumulative risk of trace element contamination to seagrass meadows, trace element (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Mn and Zn) levels in surface sediment and seagrass tissues were measured in the largest Chinese Zostera japonica habitat, located in the Yellow River Estuary, at three sites and three seasons (fall, spring and summer) in 2014–2015. In all three seasons, trace element accumulation in the sediment exceeded background levels for Cd and Hg. Cumulative risk to Z. japonica habitat in the Yellow River Estuary, from all trace elements together, was assessed as “moderate” in all three seasons examined. Bioaccumulation of trace elements by seagrass tissues was highly variable between seasons and between above-ground and below-ground biomass. The variation in trace element concentration of seagrass tissues was much higher than the variation in trace element concentration of the sediment. In addition, for trace elements which tended to accumulate more in above-ground biomass than below-ground biomass (Cd and Mn), the ratio of above-ground to below-ground trace element concentration peaked at times corresponding to high water discharge and high sediment loads in the Yellow River Estuary. Overall, our results suggest that trace element accumulation in the sediment may not vary between seasons, but bioaccumulation in seagrass tissues is highly variable and may respond directly to trace elements in the water column.

While sewage pollution is contributing to the global decline of coral reefs, its offshore extent and direct reef impacts from water column mixing and benthic seeps are poorly documented. We addressed this knowledge gap on a Hawaiian coral reef using sewage indicator and benthic cover measurements, macroalgal bioassays, and a pollution scoring tool. Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and nutrient concentrations were spatially variable in surface and benthic waters, with shoreline values being highest. Shoreline macroalgae δ15N and %N indicated high nitrogen loads containing sewage, while offshore surface and benthic values suggested lower nitrogen loads from environmental sources. Coral cover was negatively correlated with FIB, macroalgal δ15N, and nutrient concentrations. Benthic salinity and temperature measurements detected daily tidal groundwater pulses which may explain these associations. While pollution scores revealed that sewage was largely concentrated along the shoreline, results showed some reached the reef and may be contributing to its declining condition.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) effects on Sparus aurata were evaluated on skin, gills and intestine by assessing the expression of immune genes and in peripheral blood evaluating genetic damage. Fish were exposed to 0.5 and 50 μg/L AuNP for 96 h. Results showed that exposure to 50 μg/L AuNP induced an upregulation in the expression of innate immune genes in gills (c3, lys, il1β, tnfα, il6, il10 and tgfβ) and intestine (il1β, tnfα and il6). Furthermore, mRNA levels of hsp70 and hsp90 were increased in gills after exposure to 0.5 μg/L AuNP, when compared to 50 μg/L. Present data demonstrated the sensitivity of gills and intestines to AuNP exposure supporting their use in the study of fish responses to other nanoparticles. Genotoxic potential of AuNP was demonstrated by increased DNA strand breaks in red blood cells of fish exposed to AuNP, suggesting that AuNP represent a potential hazard to fish.
