Antibiotics have been widely detected in the ocean and have various impacts on the environment, while knowledge of their chronic influence on phytoplankton, especially red tide algae, is still limited. Dinoflagellates and green algae are common phytoplankton in marine ecosystems. The former is the main red tide algae, and the latter is an important primary producer. We investigated the long-term responses of two representative algae, Prorocentrum lima and Chlorella sp., to two common antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and norfloxacin (NFX)) at environmentally relevant levels (10 and 100 ng/L) during simulated natural conditions. The cell density and activities of three antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD)) were analyzed. The results showed that the influence of each antibiotic on Chlorella sp. was not significant (p > 0.05) during the first 10 days, but the influence of the antibiotics later began to show significant inhibition (p < 0.05) compared with the control group, especially during mixed exposure. P. lima was not inhibited, but its cell density increased. SMX had a superior stimulation effect on P. lima. The three enzymes activities of P. lima increased, and the antioxidant mechanism was not seriously impacted. However, for Chlorella sp., the activity of SOD increased while the activities of CAT and POD decreased, suggesting that this algae’s antioxidant system was unbalanced due to oxidative stress. Based on our results, the growth of P. lima was different from green algae Chlorella sp. as well as other inhibited marine algae (such as diatom, golden algae) studied in previous studies. Therefore, as a typical pollutant in the ocean, antibiotics may play a positive role in the bloom of dinoflagellate red tides.

The potential adverse effects of nanoplastics, such as nanopolystyrene, have received the great attention recently. However, the molecular response of organisms to nanoplastics is still largely unknown. In this study, we employed Caenorhabditis elegans as an animal model to investigate the long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in response to long-term exposure to low-dose nanopolystyrene (100 nm). Based on Hiseq 2000 sequencing and qRT-PCR confirmation, we identified 36 lncRNAs (21 down-regulated lncRNAs and 15 up-regulated lncRNAs) in response to nanopolystyrene (1 μg/L). Using intestinal reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and locomotion behavior as endpoints, we found that RNAi knockdown of linc-2, linc-9, or linc-61 induced a susceptibility to nanopolystyrene toxicity, and RNAi knockdown of linc-18 or linc-50 induced a resistance to nanopolystyrene toxicity. Meanwhile, nanopolystyrene (1 μg/L) increased expressions of linc-2, linc-9, linc-18, and linc-61 and decreased linc-50 expression, suggesting that these 5 lncRNAs mediated two different responses to nanopolystyrene exposure. Bioinformatical analysis implied that these 5 lncRNAs were associated with multiple biological processes and signaling pathways. Our results demonstrated the crucial roles of lncRNAs in response to long-term exposure to low-dose nanopolystyrene in organisms.

Atrazine (ATR), one of the most widely used pesticides in agricultural production, are gradually concerned due to potential ecosystem and health risks. Further, the induction of ATR nephrotoxicity and detoxification response is still unknown. To evaluate ATR-induced nephrotoxicity, quails were treated with 0, 50, 250 or 500 mg/kg ATR by gavage administration for 45 days. Histopathology indicated that ATR exposure caused renal tubular epithelial cell swelling and endoplasmic reticulum degeneration, suggesting that ATR exposure causes renal impairment even renal diseases. Notably, ATR interfered cytochrome P450 system (CYP450s) homeostasis by enhancing contents or activities of CYP450s (total CYP450, Cyt b5, AH, APND, NCR and ERND) and the expression of CYP450 isoforms (CYP1A, CYP1B, CYP2C and CYP3A). ATR triggered phase II detoxifying reaction, reflected by the elevated GSH level, GST activity and the up-regulation of GST isoforms (GSTa, GSTa3 and GSTt1) and GSH synthetase (GCLC). Moreover, ABC transporters were activated to expel ATR from the body by increasing expression of MRP1 and P-GP gene. Accompanying these alterations, the nuclear receptors (AHR, CAR and PXR) were activated by ATR in a dose-dependent manner. Analysis results of present study demonstrated that the induction of phase II detoxifying enzyme system and ABC transporters could be modulated by nuclear receptors response and CYP450s disturbance in low-dose ATR-treated quail. In conclusion, all data suggested that nuclear receptors AHR-mediated detoxification pathway was involved in ATR-induced nephrotoxicity. These results provided new evidence about the nephrotoxic effects of ATR on the response of biotransformation and detoxification system.

Magnetic β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) porous polymer nanospheres (P-MCD) was fabricated by one-pot solvent thermal method using β-CD immobilized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles with tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile as the monomer. Compared with the β-CD polymerization method reported in the literature,_ENREF_1 the synthetic route is effective and simple, thereby overcoming the harsh conditions that require nitrogen protection and always maintain anhydrous and oxygen-free. Moreover, the immobilization of β-CD on magnetic nanoparticles is combined with the cross-linking polymerization of the cross-linker, leading to a good synergistic effect on the removal of contaminants. Meanwhile, the dispersibility of the magnetic carrier enhances the dispersion of the β-CD porous polymer in the aqueous phase, and improves the inclusion adsorption performance and the adsorption process. P-MCD exhibited superior adsorption capacity and fast kinetics to MB. The maximum adsorption capacity of MB for P-MCD was 305.8 mg g −1, which is more than β-CD modified Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@β-CD). Moreover, the material had a short equilibrium time (5 min) for MB, high recovery and good recyclability (the adsorption efficiency was still above 86% after five repeated uses).

The adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by components such as elemental carbon (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), and particles is different, and EC and PAHs are good materials for reconstructing historical human activity patterns and pollution conditions. In this study, the effects of EC (soot and char), TOC and particles of different grain size on PAHs in surface sediments were quantitatively analysed, and their historical concentrations in a sediment core from western Taihu Lake were reconstructed. The contents of soot, TOC, clay, EC and char explained 57.2%, 27.6%, 26.0%, 24.0% and 16.4%, respectively, of the PAH concentrations in surface sediments. The correlation between the soot and PAH levels was significantly higher than that between the char, TOC, and clay contents and PAH levels, and PAHs were mainly affected by the local economic development and human activity, as indicated by metrics of population, highway mileage, coal burning, and industrial output. With the development of the economy of the Taihu Lake Basin, the composition of PAHs in the sediments has changed: the proportion of low-molecular-weight PAHs decreased from 42.4% to 17.5%, and that of high-molecular-weight PAHs increased from 58.7% to 82.5%. The concentration of PAHs in pore water from Taihu Lake over the past 100 years was reconstructed and ranged from 43.1 to 961.2 μg L−1, with an average of 180.7 μg L−1. After China's reform and opening up, the concentrations of various PAHs in Taihu Lake changed from safe to chronic pollution levels. The ratios of lead (Pb) isotopes and the diagnostic ratios of PAHs showed that the main sources of PAHs in western Taihu Lake sediments were human activities such as coal and petroleum combustion.

Sealcoat is an emulsified coating product applied to asphalt to protect against surface weathering. Sealcoat products contain coal-tar (CT) or petroleum-derived residues and are a recognized source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban areas. Although the toxicity of urban runoff from CT-sealed asphalt is established, chemical characterization has focused more on PAHs and alkylated derivatives and less on polar transformation products. In this study, solid-phase extraction (SPE) was used to concentrate dissolved (<0.2 μm) species in runoff collected from asphalt surfaces sealed with CT pitch or steam-cracked petroleum (SCP) residues. CT-sealed surfaces released a 20-fold greater concentration of SPE-extractable compounds in runoff compared to SCP-sealed surfaces. Representative compounds were sorted into four groups: nitrogen heterocycles (azaarenes) and other oxygen- and sulfur-containing species (N HET); hydroxylated N heterocycles (hydroxylated N HET); the nonionic surfactant 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl-5-decyne-4,7-diol (TMDD); and styrene-acrylonitrile polymer byproducts (SAN Trimer). Species concentrations and weathering-related disappearance behavior differed among the four subgroups. While hydroxylated N HET concentrations decreased by 94% in runoff from CT-sealed surfaces 60 h after sealcoat application, SAN Trimer concentrations in CT and SCP runoff increased over time as polymerization progressed, illustrating the complex changes the chemicals in sealcoat undergo as it cures under environmentally-relevant conditions. Overall, this study shows that urban runoff collected from CT-sealed and SCP-sealed asphalt surfaces is a potential source of water-soluble contaminants with unknown long-term ecotoxicological effects to aquatic systems.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and new flame retardants (NFRs) are known thyroid hormone (TH) disruptors, but their disrupting mechanisms in humans are not completely understood. In this study, we aimed to explore the disrupting mechanisms of the aforementioned chemicals via examining TH-regulated proteins and gene expression in human serum. Adult participants from an e-waste dismantling (exposed group) and a control region (control group) in South China provided blood samples for the research. Some compounds of PCBs, PBDEs, and NFRs showed strong binding affinity to the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroglobulin, thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), gene expression of TH receptor α (TRα) and β, and iodothyronine deiodinase I (ID1). The highly exposed individuals had lower levels of TBG, TSH, and expression of TRα, but higher expression of ID1 than those of the control group. The disruption of TH-regulated proteins and gene expression suggested the exertion of different and, at times, even contradictory effects on TH disruption. However, no statistically significant difference was found in the TH levels between the exposed and the control group, implying that the TH disruption induced by these chemicals depends on the combined influence of multiple mechanisms. Gene expression appears to be an effective approach for investigations of TH disruption and the potential health effects.

Our world is awash with plastic. The massive increase in plastics production, combined with a shift to single-use, disposable plastics and widespread mismanagement of plastic waste, has created a huge “tragedy of the commons” (Hardin, 1968) in our oceans, seas and waterways. Plastics pollution is now a global externality that damages ecosystems, curtails biodiversity and ultimately has the potential to affect everyone on the planet. Although waste output is often modelled separately from environmental pollution in research, in the case of plastics, the waste problem has become one of global pollution. In this paper, we model the relationship between mismanaged plastic waste1 and income per capita for 151 countries, and for the first time find empirical support for the environmental Kuznets curve using plastics pollution data. Further, we find support for the hypothesis that a key instrument for reducing plastics pollution is investment in scientific and technological research. The paper concludes with a discussion of the results, limitations, and implications for future research and practice.

A key action of current aquatic environmental sciences is the determination of concentration-response assessments to quantitatively measure the risk of pollutants, and fish lethal tests are still a regulatory requirement for assessing the environmental risk of both new and existing substances in the aquatic compartment. However, animal health and welfare aspects, as well as the time and resources required to support fish lethal testing, stimulate research for alternative in vitro methods, and cell-based assays are considered as one such alternative. The first goal of the present study was to compile existing fish short-term toxicity and cell toxicity data of pesticides through a scientific literature search, and relate in vivo and in vitro results to identify sensitive cell models, mammalian-, fish- or arthropod-derived. Discovering cell models which are sensitive is of great importance, since the risk of false negatives, believed to be the main limitation of cell-based assays as an alternative to fish tests, may decrease. As to the second goal, this study also determined and compared cell toxicity results for 12 pesticides using rat cardiomyoblast H9c2(2–1) cells with the corresponding fish LC₅₀,₉₆ₕ (50% lethal concentration at 96 h of exposure) values collected in literature. On the whole, the in vivo/in vitro ratio was obtained for 50 pesticides belonging to 23 groups, and presented only 27% of positive results, thus confirming the low sensitivity of cell-based assays in relation to fish lethal data for pesticides. In general, cell-based assays still do not seem to be an alternative to the regulatory short-term fish assay for pesticides, making further studies necessary.

We investigate the distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over Indian subcontinent during a winter month of January 2011 combining the regional model WRF-Chem (Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry) with ground- and space-based observations and chemical reanalysis. WRF-Chem simulated VOCs are found to be comparable with ground-based observations over contrasting environments of the Indian subcontinent. WRF-Chem results reveal the elevated levels of VOCs (e. g. propane) over the Indo-Gangetic Plain (16 ppbv), followed by the Northeast region (9.1 ppbv) in comparison with other parts of the Indian subcontinent (1.3–8.2 ppbv). Higher relative abundances of propane (27–31%) and ethane (13–17%) are simulated across the Indian subcontinent. WRF-Chem simulated formaldehyde and glyoxal show the western coast, Eastern India and the Indo-Gangetic Plain as the regional hotspots, in a qualitative agreement with the MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) reanalysis and satellite-based observations. Lower values of RGF (ratio of glyoxal to formaldehyde <0.04) suggest dominant influences of the anthropogenic emissions on the distribution of VOCs over Indian subcontinent, except the northeastern region where higher RGF (∼0.06) indicates the role of biogenic emissions, in addition to anthropogenic emissions. Analysis of HCHO/NO₂ ratio shows a NOₓ-limited ozone production over India, with a NOₓ-to-VOC transition regime over central India and IGP. The study highlights a need to initiate in situ observations of VOCs over regional hotspots (Northeast, Central India, and the western coast) based on WRF-Chem results, where different satellite-based observations differ significantly.
