This study compares the role of salinity regime and chemical pollution in the biodiversity patterns of estuarine benthic communities. A specific field survey allowed us to explain the response of organisms to mixtures of chemicals and the effects of salinity regime and extreme events on the richness and composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages. The patterns obtained provide further evidence that both stress sources are key factors in macroinvertebrate communities' organization, but the type and magnitude of the changes differ. The abundance of opportunistic species increased according to the pollution gradient, while this indicator was less sensitive to salinity descriptors. In contrast, biotic indices responded to the salinity regime but did not show a consistent pattern in response to pollutants. Multivariate analyses reflected both environmental stress gradients. Overall, the results suggested that diversity increased in the habitats where the frequency and duration of extreme drought and flood events were low.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Increasing environmental problems demand mitigation solutions to fulfill sustainability development goals. Microalgae offer possibility of valorizing the CO₂ and wastewater-derived nutrients to produce numerous industrial bioproducts. However, developing self-sustained systems for the complete valorization of algal biomass into valuable biobased products is challenging. Currently, sustainable algal processing faces several challenges including costly cultivation, difficult harvesting, and incomplete biomass valorization. This review assessed the prospects of emerging technologies focusing on the integrated approaches for sustainable algal biorefinery development ensuring the sustainability of environment-water-energy nexus. RECENT FINDINGS: Evaluation of various upstream, midstream, and downstream processing technologies provided insights into the processing issues. In upstream processing, high-rate algal ponds and integrated carbon capture and transformation technologies offer waste valorization into eco-friendly algal production. A brief comparison of harvesting technologies mainly focusing on chemical and biological flocculation has shown that integrating physical and biological harvesting methods are more reliable and efficient. Overview of downstream processing has indicated that biomass processing in a cascading manner offers the complete biomass valorization in a zero-waste paradigm. Assessment of cultivation-to-production technologies highlighted that “zero-waste” algal biorefinery has the potential to become reality by integrating the industry 4.0 and phenomics approaches with eco-friendly cultivation, harvesting, and processing technologies. Hybrid methods based on integrated cascading processing offer complete biomass valorization in a circular bioeconomy paradigm.

The 2013 “Qingdao oil pipeline explosion” contaminated about 2.5 km of shoreline in the Jiaozhou Bay area and aroused widespread concern because of the serious casualties even though it was not the most severe oil-spill contamination in China. To evaluate the long-term impact, we collected thirty-three surface sediment samples after 3 years of the accident, with sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) detected. Spatial-temporal variation in PAHs revealed that a minimal impact might still be present after 3 years. Source analysis combined with a one-way ANOVA showed that pyrolytic sources were consistently predominant. The environmental impact was already minimal 3 years later and negligible thereafter. Although the cancer risk has decreased over the years, there has always been a potential hazard to human for specific occupation, with all of the risk values exceeded 10⁻⁶. This study offers a reference for assessing the long-term impact of oil spills in similar bay areas.

Ecological restoration is an important tool to reverse habitat loss and recover ecosystem services. Here, for two years, we examine the dynamic of Posidonia oceanica following the restoration of a 1149 m² meadow damaged by the Concordia shipwreck. To evaluate the suitability of a recently employed seagrass restoration protocol, we assessed the patches' survival and development by high-spatial resolution photomosaics over the whole transplanted surface. To estimate recovery trajectories, we quantified the cuttings' survival, shoot density, and Daily Leaf Production within fixed monitoring squares. The outcomes confirmed that our protocol could be efficiently applied at larger scales, showing diminutions in cuttings' survival and shoot density over the first year (up to −20%), followed by stability in the number of living cuttings and increases of leaf bundles (up to +5%/year). Our insights demonstrate that the recovery of P. oceanica can be speeded up and underline the need for case-specific transplantation strategies.

From August 2019 to August 2020, particulate and dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentrations (PAHs) were analyzed in the water body of West Nanao Bay, Japan, to determinate their levels, environmental pathways, and ecological risks at this remote but shallow and semi-enclosed bay. The 14 targeted PAHs were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector. Even when water column stratifies, the summatory of 14 targeted dissolved PAHs did not follow significantly change with depth. Results agreed with our previous findings in the surface distribution at the bay and can be attributed to long retention time of the water mass of the semi-enclosed bay. Suspended solids start precipitating according to their size; with biggest particles rapidly settling in the proximities of river mouths. Partition coefficients (Kp) varied from 10³ to 10⁷, according to molecular weights. In general, highest Kp were found in the nepheloid layer. The risk quotients, RQ∑₁₄ PAHₛ ₍NCₛ₎ (1.04–174.08), indicated that PAHs represented a very low to low environmental risks.

Crassostrea virginica was exposed to different light crude oil levels to assess the effect on transcriptomic response and metabolic rate. The exposure time was 21 days, and levels of 100 and 200 μg/L were used, including a control. The most significant difference among treatments was the overexpression of several genes associated with energy production, reactive oxygen species (ROS) regulation, immune system response, and inflammatory response. Also, a hydrocarbon concentration-related pattern was identified in ROS regulation, with a gene expression ratio near 1.8:1 between 200 and 100 μg/L treatments. Statistical analysis showed no interaction effect for metabolic rate; however, significant differences were found for oil concentration and time factors, with a higher oxygen consumption at 200 μg/L. Our findings provide novel information about the metabolic response of C. virginica during hydrocarbons exposure. In addition, our results point out which biological processes should be investigated as targets for searching bioindicators.

Alterations in mollusc shells have been proposed contamination biomarkers. We used geometric morphometrics analyses associated with analytical determinations of contaminants to select suitable biological models among species widely distributed on coastal zones. The study was carried out using Lottia subrugosa (herbivore limpet), Crassostrea brasiliana (filter-feeder bivalve), and Stramonita brasiliensis (carnivore gastropod) obtained along a marked contamination gradient at Santos Estuarine System (Brazil). L. subrugosa and S. brasiliensis presented distinct shapes along the gradient, while no significant differences in shell form were seen for C. brasiliana. Indeed, limpets and snails presented morphometric parameters consistent with measured contamination levels hazardous substances. Based on cross-validation models, the reliability of morphometric responses was over 75% for the herbivore and carnivore species. In addition, for S. brasiliensis, a 95.2% confidence was detected in most contaminated sites. Therefore, shell alterations on carnivorous gastropods should be further investigated, seeking to be effectively employed as pollution biomarkers.

Fragmentation of plastic macro-debris into secondary microplastics [MPs] is primarily the result of their extensive oxidation under exposure to solar UV radiation. The heterogeneity in the marine zones with respect to their oxidative potential for plastics, introduces a marked zonal bias in their ability to carry out weathering and fragmentation. Comparing the oxidative environments of the beach zone and the upper pelagic zone with floating plastics, it is argued that the latter tends to preclude photooxidative fragmentation. Abundant MPs found in seawater are therefore more likely to have originated on beaches or land and subsequently transferred to the water, as opposed to being generated by weathering of floating plastic stock. Laboratory-accelerated weathering of plastics in seawater obtains efficient micro-fragmentation and in some instances photo- dissolution of the plastic debris, but these results cannot be reliably extrapolated to natural weathering conditions in the ocean environment.

Cold-water corals (CWCs) have come under threat from anthropogenic activities such as fishing despite their ecological significance as biodiversity hotspots and as such are being protected in Europe under the EU Habitats Directive with some designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). This study maps the distribution and sources of marine litter in CWC habitats in two SACs on the Irish margin. Data were collected with remotely operated vehicle in the SACs. The density, abundance and composition of litter were assessed, with differences observed between the two sites. The regional morphology influences the distribution of litter in the SACs, with CWC reefs and rock exposures trapping more marine litter. Fishing gear (80.7%) and plastics (55.1%) were commonly found. The observed fisheries-derived litter in the SACs exceed global averages of 10–20% fishing gear, suggesting the SACs appear to offer limited protection to the coral habitats with respect to marine litter.

We aimed to describe how debris originated from coastal cities and fisheries circulates and accumulates along the Argentine continental shelf and its potential interaction with southern giant petrels (SGP, Macronectes giganteus). We used tracking data of 31 SGPs (adults and juveniles) from Patagonian colonies. Lagrangian simulations of particles were released from coastal cities and fisheries. Oceanographic features together with plastic input generated a corridor of debris through the Argentine shelf with areas of high debris accumulation, exposing SGP to plastic consumption. During chick provisioning trips 93.9% of petrel's locations overlapped with areas of plastic accumulation. Although early developmental stages were more exposed to particles from cities, the exposure of petrels (all classes) to debris from fisheries was 10% higher than from cities. Measures to reduce debris from fisheries, would reduce plastic ingestion by giant petrels. Proper management of open sky dumpsters would reduce plastic consumption by chicks and juveniles.
