Peru has a large small-scale fishing fleet upon which many coastal communities depend for their food and livelihoods. Nonetheless, no thorough assessments have been conducted of solid waste production and management of small-scale fisheries (SSF) and associated communities. We aimed to assess gillnet SSF and household solid waste generation in San Jose, north Peru. A solid waste generation assessment was conducted by monitoring solid waste production during 22 fishing trips and interviewing 70 families. Daily waste generation and recycling per capita, were calculated applying separate Generalized Linear Mixed-Effect Models. Organic waste is the most frequently produced during fishing activities (38%) and at home (83%), followed by plastic and metal. Glass, paper/cardboard, and fishing nets were solely produced during fishing trips. Daily waste per capita was estimated on 0.14 kg∗(day)⁻¹ onboard, and 0.33 kg∗(day)⁻¹ at home. Additionally, perception interviews showed that the population of San Jose perceived solid waste as a threat to public health and marine ecosystems. This study provides a first attempt to assess solid waste production in a Peruvian fishing community, showing the need for an integrated management plan embracing vessel and land-based solid waste generation.

The Black Sea receives increasing amounts of microplastics from rivers. In this study, we explore options to reduce future river export of microplastics to the Black Sea. We develop five scenarios with different reduction options and implement them to a Model to Assess River Inputs of pollutaNts to seA (MARINA-Global) for 107 sub-basins. Today, European rivers draining into the Black Sea export over half of the total microplastics. In 2050, Asian rivers draining into the sea will be responsible for 34–46% of microplastic pollution. Implemented advanced treatment will reduce point-source pollution. Reduced consumption or more collection of plastics will reduce 40% of microplastics in the sea by 2050. In the optimistic future, sea pollution is 84% lower than today when the abovementioned reduction options are combined. Reduction options affect the share of pollution sources. Our insights could support environmental policies for a zero pollution future of the Black Sea.

The oceanic acidification and coastal hypoxia have potential to enhance biological uptake of dissolved iron (Fe) by phytoplankton. In this study, the Fe uptake rate (FeUR) in Daya Bay was significantly negatively correlated with pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) (r = −0.81 and −0.73, respectively, p < 0.001). In addition, binary regression (FeUR = −1.45 × pH − 0.10 × DO + 13.64) also indicated that both pH and DO played key roles in FeUR variations. As pH and DO decreased, Fe uptake by phytoplankton was promoted, and the contribution of nano-phytoplankton to Fe uptake increased significantly, while that of pico-FeUR decreased. These will result in the phytoplankton community to be miniaturized and Fe requirement of phytoplankton goes higher, thereby leading changes of phytoplankton composition and coastal ecosystem. This study helps to understand how Fe could affect the coastal ecosystem under the increasing anthropogenic influences.

A major coal mine project in Queensland, Australia, is currently under review. It is planned to be located about 10 km away from the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA). Sediment dispersal patterns and their impact on marine ecosystems have not been properly assessed yet. Here, we simulate the dispersal of different sediment types with a high-resolution ocean model, and derive their environmental footprint. We show that sediments finer than 32 μm could reach dense seagrass meadows and a dugong sanctuary within a few weeks. The intense tidal circulation leads to non-isotropic and long-distance sediment dispersal patterns along the coast. Our results suggest that the sediments released by this project will not be quickly mixed but rather be concentrated where the most valuable ecosystems are located. If accepted, this coal mine could therefore have a far-reaching impact on the GBRWHA and its iconic marine species.

Sediments in algal turfs can modify a wide variety of key ecological processes on coral reefs. While some larger reef fishes can remove these turf-bound sediments, the role of small, yet abundant, cryptobenthic fishes is currently unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we explored the extent to which the blenny, Ecsenius stictus, can shape sediment dynamics on coral reefs by quantifying their sediment ingestion and space use. Per unit body mass, E. stictus process sediments at comparable rates to key parrotfish and surgeonfish species. However, in absolute terms, E. stictus has a negligible influence on net sediment dynamics, despite their abundance. Behavioural observations and 3D photogrammetry reveal that E. stictus preferentially feed and rest on elevated surfaces; potentially because of low sediment loads on these surfaces. Overall, E. stictus may be responding to sediment loads rather than manipulating them; it is a passenger rather than a driver in reef processes.

The global presence and prevalence of microplastic have moved microplastic from an emerging pollutant to a persistent contaminant. Microplastic prevails in almost all spheres of the environment viz. terrestrial, marine and atmosphere the globe abundantly. The prevalence and toxic effects on marine organisms have been studied around the world but the studies are limited to the coastal regime of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI). This study aims to record microplastic prevalence on the tourist beaches of Port Blair, ANI. Three coastal stations namely Cove beach, Quarry beach and Wandoor beach were examined in detail in this regard. Microplastics in the form of lines, fragments, pellets, foams and fibres were found at the sampled sites. Wandoor beach recorded the highest microplastic particles ranging from 105–475 particles kg⁻¹ of sediment with the mean value of 249.82 ± 105.78 particles kg⁻¹. Quarry beach near the municipal waste dumpsite showed the lowest of 72.5–222.5 particles kg⁻¹ with a mean value of 135.625 ± 62.83 particles kg⁻¹. The polymeric forms found were High-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This study revealed microplastic input from municipal dump waste near the beach. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed the presence of a new type of polymer namely plasta zinc in the beach sediment, which possibly could be a nanoplastic. Its presence reveals the biological enzymatic degradation of microplastic occurring in the marine environment. Further investigations are required to determine the factors influencing the prevalence of microplastic, its toxic effects on marine habitat and microplastic degradation mechanisms in the marine habitat.

The TRopical Oil Pollution Investigations in Coastal Systems (TROPICS) experiment, conducted on the Caribbean coast of Panama, has become one of the most comprehensive field experiments examining the long-term impacts of oil and dispersed oil exposures in nearshore tropical marine environments. From the initial experiment through more than three decades of study and data collection visits, the intertidal and subtidal communities have exhibited significantly different impact and recovery regimes, depending on whether the sites were exposed to crude oil only or crude oil treated with a chemical dispersant. This review provides a synopsis of the original experiment and a cumulative summary of the results and observations, illustrating the environmental and ecosystem trade-offs of chemical dispersant use in mangrove, seagrass, and coral reef environments.

Costa, Filipe | Mieiro, C.L. | Pereira, M.E. | Coelho, J.P.
The bioaccessible Hg fraction in fish and seafood commonly present in the Mediterranean diet was assessed through three distinct in vitro extraction schemes. Each extraction method provided different results, highlighting the lack of a universal methodology to estimate mercury (Hg) bioaccessibility in those matrices. Bioaccessible Hg fractions ranged from 10 to nearly 90% of total mercury (T-Hg) and increased in predator species (Swordfish - Xiphias gladius, Blue Shark - Prionace glauca and Tuna - Thunnus sp.). Among the three extractions tested, the Unified Bioaccessibility Method (UBM) provided the highest estimation of Hg bioaccessibility for consumers. The tested cooking procedures (frying, grilling and steaming) considerably reduced the bioaccessible fraction. Results indicate that bioaccessible Hg found in ingested fish and seafood is far below the levels set by the current safety risk assessment legislation. These findings highlight the importance of integrating bioaccessibility measurements in food safety legislation.

Metallothioneins (MTs) belong to a conserved low-molecular-weight protein family that participates in heavy metal binding and detoxification. EcMT-1 was amplified by PCR from genomic DNA of Exopalaenon carinicauda. It contained a 180 bp open reading frame and encoded 59 amino acids. A total of 18 cysteine (Cys) residues were found in the deduced amino acid sequence, which was consistent with the Cys-rich characteristics of MTs. EcMT-1 was mainly expressed in hepatopancreas, followed by stomach and gill. The expression profiles of EcMT-1 indicated that EcMT-1 was significantly increased at 24, 48 h and 12, 24, and 48 h under the treatment of 2.5 μmol/L CdCl₂ and 50 μmol/L CuSO₄. The expression of EcMT-1 at gastrula stage was very low; it was detectable until nauplius stage, and the highest expression level appeared in the postlarvae stage.

We assessed the combined effects of polyethylene microplastic (MP) and malathion (MLT) on the survival of the fiddler crab Minuca ecuadoriensis, and MP tissue bioaccumulation in four treatments following 120 h exposure: T1) Control; T2) MLT 50 mg L⁻¹; T3) MP 200 mg L⁻¹; and T4) MLT (50 mg L⁻¹) + MP (200 mg L⁻¹). The highest mortality (80%) was in T4, followed by T2 (28%) and no mortality was in T3. Higher MP bioaccumulation was observed in T4 (572 items g tissue⁻¹) followed by T3 (70 items g tissue⁻¹). Our findings indicate that the synergistic effect of MLT and MP increased M. ecuadoriensis bioaccumulative capacity and decreases survival. Thus, as MP contamination in aquatic environments is ubiquitous, our study raises a warning on the synergistic effects of MP with other environmental contaminants and serves as a baseline for further studies.
