The temporal-spatial distributions of DDT-related contaminants (DDXs), including DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) and DDD (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane), in the sediments of Lake Chaohu and their influencing factors were studied. p,p-DDE and p,p-DDD were found to be the two dominant components of DDXs in both surface and core sediments. The parent DDT compounds were still detectable in sediment cores after the late 1930s. Historical usage of technical DDT was identified as the primary source of DDXs in sediments, as indicated by DDT/(DDD + DDE) ratios of less than one. The residual levels of DDXs were higher in the surface and core sediments in the western lake area than in other lake areas, which might be due to the combined inflow effects of municipal sewage, industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff. The DDX residues in the sediment cores reached peak values in the late 1970s or early 1980s. There were significant positive relationships between DDX residues in sediment cores with annual DDT production and with fine particulate sizes (<4.5 μm). The relationship between the DDXs and TOC in sediment was complex, as indicated by the significant differences among the surface and core sediments. The algae-derived organic matter significantly influenced the amount of residue, composition and distribution of DDXs in the sediments. The DDD/DDE ratios responded well to the anaerobic conditions in the sediments that were caused by algal blooms after the late 1970s in the western lake area. This suggests that the algae-derived organic matter was an important factor and served as a biomarker of eutrophication and also affected the DDX residues and lifecycle in the lake ecosystem.

Particulate matter (PM10) is the key indicator of air quality index in Brunei Darussalam and the principal pollutant for haze related episodes in Southeast Asia. This study examined the temporal and spatial distribution of PM10 base on a long-term monitoring data (2009–2014) in order to identify the emission sources and favorable meteorological conditions for high PM10 concentrations across the country. PM10 concentrations measured at the various locations differ significantly but the general temporal characteristics show clear patterns of seasonal variations across the country with the highest concentrations recorded during the southwest monsoon. The high PM10 values defined in the study were not evenly distributed over the years but occurred mostly within the southwest monsoon months of June to September. Further investigations with bivariate polar concentrations plots and k-means clustering demonstrated the significant influence of Southeast Asian regional biomass fires on the high PM10 concentrations recorded across the country. The results of the polar plots and cluster analyses were further confirmed by the evaluations with Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) backward air masses trajectories analysis and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) fire records. Among the meteorological variables considered, temperature, rainfall and relative humidity were the most important meteorological variables that influence the concentration throughout the year. High PM10 values are associated with high temperatures and low amounts of rainfall and relative humidity. In addition, wind speed and direction also play significant role in the recorded high PM10 concentrations and were mainly responsible for its seasonality during the study period.

The sorption of PAH on 12 different sediments was investigated and was correlated to their corresponding organic matter (OM) content and quality. For this purpose, the OM was precisely characterized using thermal analysis consisting in the successive combustion and quantification of the increasingly thermostable fractions of the OM. Simultaneously, the water-exchangeable fraction of the sorbed PAH defined as the amount of PAH freely exchanged between the water and the sediment (by opposition to the PAH harshly sorbed to the sediments particles) was determined using a passive sampler methodology recently developed. The water concentrations, when the sediment-water system is equilibrated, were also assessed which allows the determination of the sediment-water distribution coefficients without artifacts introduced by the non water-exchangeable fraction of PAH. Hence, the present study provides the distribution coefficients of PAH between the water and 4 different OM fractions combusted at a specific temperature range. The calculated distribution coefficients demonstrate that the sedimentary OM combusted at the intermediate temperature range (between 300 °C and 450 °C) drives the reversible sorption of PAH while the inferred sorption to the OM combusted at a lower and higher temperature range does not dominate the partitioning process.

The expanding production and usage of commercial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) will inevitably increase their environmental release, with sediments as a substantial sink. However, little knowledge is available about the potential impacts of AgNPs on freshwater sediment microbial communities, as well as the interactions between microbial communities and biogeochemical factors in AgNPs polluted sediment. To address these issues, two different sediments: a eutrophic freshwater sediment and an oligotrophic freshwater sediment, were exposed to 1 mg/g of either AgNO3, uncoated AgNPs (35-nm and 75-nm), or polyvinylpyrrolidone coated AgNPs (PVP-AgNPs) (30–50 nm) for 45 days. High-throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (16S rRNA) genes using the Illumina MiSeq platform was conducted to evaluate the effects of Ag addition on bacterial community composition. Moreover, sediment microbial biomass and activity were assessed by counting cultivable bacterial number and determining enzyme activities. During the 45-day exposure, compared with no amendment control, some treatments had resulted in significant changes and alterations of sediment biomass or bacterial enzyme activities shortly. While the microbial components at phylum level were rarely affected by AgNPs addition, and as confirmed by the statistical analysis with two-factor analysis of similarities (ANOSIM), there were no significant differences on bacterial community structure across the amended treatments. Redundancy analysis further demonstrated that chemical parameters acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted silver (SE-Ag) in sediment significantly structured the overall bacterial community in sediments spiked with various silver species. In summary, these findings suggested that the ecotoxicity of AgNPs may be attenuated by the transformation under complex environmental conditions and the self-adaption of sediment microbial communities.

Accumulations of heavy metals in urban soils are highly spatial heterogeneity and affected by multiple factors including soil properties, land use and pattern, population and climatic conditions. We studied accumulation risks of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in unban soils of Beijing and their influencing based on the regression tree analysis and a GIS-based overlay model. Result shows that Zinc causes the most extensive soil pollution and Cu result in the most acute soil pollution. The soil's organic carbon content and CEC and population growth are the most significant factors affecting heavy metal accumulation. Other influence factors in land use pattern, urban landscape, and wind speed also contributed, but less pronounced. The soils in areas with higher degree of urbanization and surrounded by intense vehicular traffics have higher accumulation risk of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn.

Environmental mobility of C60 fullerene can be significantly affected in the presence of naturally abundant α-FeOOH. However, α-FeOOH vary significantly in sizes, shapes and associated properties that can greatly influence the fate and transport of C60 fullerene in environmental media. Therefore, colloidal hetero-association between well crystallized low aspect (LAsp) α-FeOOH and nC60 fullerene may differ substantially to weakly crystallized high-aspect (HAsp) counterpart. In contrast to LAsp α-FeOOH, inherent crystal defects and surface charge generation in HAsp α-FeOOH facilitated strong Coulombic attraction and aggregation with fullerene in acidic pH. However, LAsp α-FeOOH demonstrated subtle entropic depletion mediated interaction with fullerene prevalent in hard rods. Humic acid (HA) encapsulation of HAsp α-FeOOH substantially blocked fullerene attachment. Minute enhancement in colloidal stability was detected for HA-coated HAsp α-FeOOH and fullerene mixture to HA-coated HAsp α-FeOOH alone. To investigate the interfacial assembly of α-FeOOH with fullerene “in situ” differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopic investigations were employed. This study showed significantly different interface behavior of the binary mixtures of fullerene and HAsp α-FeOOH NPs, and LAsp particles. On air-water interface, bare HAsp α-FeOOH displayed liquid crystalline packing. However, addition of fullerene to HAsp α-FeOOH suspension at pH5 produced closed-loop polygonal and circular ring structures. Head-to-tail alignment of magnetic dipoles as well as fullerene hydrophobicity facilitated such assembly formation. “Ex situ” AFM investigation revealed further the presence of magnetically derived ring structure which asserts that the formed “in situ” ensembles were not transient, hence, may abate fullerene transport through environmental interfaces. Barring hydrophobicity assisted attachment of fullerene to LAsp α-FeOOHs, the absence of any close-packed structures may unlikely abate fullerene transport as envisaged in case of HAsp α-FeOOH. Thus, aspect ratio variation and associated material properties of naturally abundant α-FeOOH may significantly impact fullerene transport through environmental media.

Sediment cores and soil samples were taken from nine lakes and their catchments across England with varying degrees of direct human disturbance. Mercury (Hg) analysis demonstrated a range of impacts, many from local sources, resulting from differing historical and contemporary site usage and management. Lakes located in industrially important areas showed clear evidence for early Hg pollution with concentrations in sediments reaching 400–1600 ng g−1 prior to the mid-19th century. Control of inputs resulting from local management practices and a greater than 90% reduction in UK Hg emissions since 1970 were reflected by reduced Hg pollution in some lakes. However, having been a sink for Hg deposition for centuries, polluted catchment soils are now the major Hg source for most lakes and consequently recovery from reduced Hg deposition is being delayed.

The Hudson River, NY, USA is contaminated for over 300 km with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) released from two General Electric (GE) capacitor plants. We collected adult and juvenile mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) from four different areas of the river; an area upstream of the GE plants (n = 38), two areas directly downstream of the GE plants (n = 41, n = 38), and an area more than 100 km downstream in the freshwater tidal river (n = 20). Collections occurred during July and August (2008) when ducks were flightless to ensure ducks were “resident” and exposures were local. Fat and muscle tissue were analyzed for PCBs. PCBs were detected in all samples, and mallards below the GE plant sites on the Hudson River had orders of magnitude higher concentrations of PCBs than those above the plants. Juvenile mallards from areas directly downstream of the GE plant sites tended to have higher PCB concentrations in fat than adults. The patterns of PCB congeners and homolog groups varied across the study areas, with areas directly downstream of the GE plants dominated by tetra-chloro biphenyls whereas samples from upstream and the freshwater tidal river tended towards higher chlorinated congeners. Congener patterns between male and female and juvenile and adult mallards were generally similar within study areas, with the exception of one area downstream of the GE plants where adult birds exhibited different patterns than juveniles. Evidence of PCBs from the GE plant sites was detected in the tidal Hudson River, more than 100 km downstream of the plant sites. More than 90% of the ducks collected in areas downstream of the GE plants but above the tidally influenced river exceed the USFDA tolerance level for PCBs in poultry, which should be a concern for consumers of waterfowl taken in proximity to the upper Hudson River.

Diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is considered to be an endocrine disruptor, which unlike other chemicals that have either non-specific (e.g., narcotics) or more generalized reactive modes of action, affect the Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and tend to have specific interactions with particular molecular targets within biochemical pathways. Responding to this challenge, a novel method for deriving predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) and probabilistic ecological risk assessment (PERAs) for DEHP based on long-term exposure to potentially sensitive species with appropriate apical endpoints was development for protection of Chinese surface waters. PNECs based on potencies to cause lesions in reproductive tissues of fishes, which ranged from 0.04 to 0.20 μg DEHP L−1, were significantly less than those derived based on other endpoints or other taxa, such as invertebrates. An assessment of risks posed by DEHP to aquatic organisms in surface waters of China showed that 88.17% and 78.85% of surface waters in China were predicted to pose risks to reproductive fitness of fishes with thresholds of protection for aquatic organisms based on 5% (HC5) and 10% (HC10), respectively. Assessment of risks of effects based on effects mediated by the HPG-axis should consider effects on chronic, non-lethal endpoints for specific taxa, especially for reproductive fitness of fishes.

Perfluorooctanesulphonic acid (PFOS) is a ubiquitous contaminant in the aquatic environment and our earlier studies demonstrated that chronic PFOS exposures lead to a female-biased sex ratio and decreased sperm quality in male zebrafish. The underlying mechanism for these reproductive effects is unknown. In the present study, 8 h post-fertilization (hpf) zebrafish were exposed to PFOS at 250 μg/L for 5 months, and the levels of sex hormones, expression of sex determination related genes, and histological and ultrastructural changes of gonads were fully characterized. During the sex differentiation period, we observed elevated estradiol (E2) and decreased testosterone (T) levels in whole tissue homogenates from PFOS exposed juveniles. In fully mature adult male fish, serum E2 levels were slightly increased, however, the estrogen receptor alpha (esr1) was significantly elevated in PFOS treated male gonads. Histological and electron microscopic examinations revealed structural changes in the gonads of PFOS exposed male and female adult zebrafish. In summary, chronic PFOS exposure disrupts sex hormone level and related gene expression and impairs gonadal development, which may contribute to the previously reported PFOS reproductive toxicity.
