Utilizing a granulated coal bottom ash and oyster shells for nutrient removal in eutrophic sediments Полный текст

Various in-situ capping materials have been studied to remediate contaminated sediments for sustaining a healthy ecosystem in a coastal area. We developed Granulated coal bottom ash and oyster shells (GBO) with different mixing ratios of OS. Pyrolyzed and grounded coal bottom ash and oyster shells were used to produce GBO, which the main chemical elements were analogous to cement. The nutrient-removal abilities of GBO were evaluated through long-term mesocosm experiments. It was found that GBO was an effective in-situ capping material for remediation of eutrophic coastal sediments, decreasing PO₄-P and SiO₂-Si concentrations in pore water by 88.4% and 56.5%, respectively. The most efficient mixing ratio of coal bottom ash and oyster shells was at a weight ratio of 1:1 for PO₄-P and SiO₂-Si removal.

Global warming, through increasing temperatures, may facilitate the spread and proliferation of outbreak-forming species which may find favourable substrate conditions on artificial aquaculture structures. The presence of stinging organisms (cnidarian hydroids) in the facilities fouling community are a source of pollution that can cause critical problems when in-situ underwater cleaning processes are performed. Multiple stressor experiments were carried out to investigate the cumulative effect on farmed mussels' functional traits when exposed to realistic stressful conditions, including presence of harmful cnidarian cells and environmental conditions of increasing temperature and short-term hypoxia. Exposure to combined stressors significantly altered mussels' performance, causing metabolic depression and low filtering activity, potentially delaying, or inhibiting their recovery ability and ultimately jeopardizing organisms' fitness. Further research on the stressors properties and occurrence is needed to obtain more realistic responses from organisms to minimize climate change impacts and increase ecosystem and marine economic activities resilience to multiple stressors.

Pyrethroids are increasingly receiving attention as aqueous micropollutants, but their presence has been reported only in a few small coastal areas. In this study, we investigated the distribution, sources, and risks of nine pyrethroids in large marine zones. The 40 seawater samples were collected from the South Yellow Sea (SYS) and East China Sea (ECS) in China, during the spring of 2020, using a high-volume, solid-phase extraction method. The total pyrethroid concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 1.82 ng L⁻¹ in the SYS and from 0.02 to 11.0 ng L⁻¹ in the ECS. We used cluster analysis to classify pollutant sources into five categories, and discussed the influence of sources on the transport and distribution of pyrethroids in each group. Ecological risk assessment indicated that pyrethroids pose a high risk to crustaceans and a negligible risk to others. These results are important for understanding the behavior of pyrethroids in marine environments.

Sunscreens generate a potentially important source of environmental contamination across marine and aquatic systems. Oxybenzone (benzophenone-3; BP-3) is one of the most common organic filters in chemical sunscreen and has been detected in seawater at high concentrations. In this study, we asked whether BP-3 contamination affected the photosynthesis, respiration, and photophysiology of rhodoliths collected offshore from popular Gulf of Mexico beaches in North Florida. We found no evidence for negative effects of the common organic UV filter BP-3 on Gulf of Mexico rhodoliths. This result is promising for the fate of these important algae who act as habitat builders and foundational components of global reef ecosystems.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in abiotic samples from Concepción Bay in Central Chile. Samples were soxhlet extracted and injected in gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GCMS). Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) showed the highest levels in air (3–1100 pg m⁻³), in water (2–64 pg L⁻¹), in sediment, and soil (1–78 ng g⁻¹ (dw)). PAHs were also high in the air (1–6 ng m⁻³), in water (1–7 ng L⁻¹), in sediment (90–300 ng g⁻¹ (dw)), and in soil (15–2300 ng g⁻¹ (dw)). The polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides were generally low and did not show clear trends along the water column, with exception of PAHs. New data are presented in this work to assess the health status of a relevant coastal area in central Chile.

We analyzed per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) used to extinguish a major fire in a petrochemical terminal from the Port of Santos (Brazil). Eight AFFFs from seven known commercial brands and one unknown sample (AFFF-1 to AFFF-8) were evaluated. 17 PFAS were identified and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography (LC/MS). The concentrations of Σ17 PFAS in the AFFFs ranged from 500 to 9000 ng/g, with prevalence of short chain PFAS (~85 %), followed by long chain PFAS. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), included in the global treaty of the Stockholm Convention, were also detected. We estimated that at least 635.96 g of PFAS were introduced in the estuary, representing a massive input of these substances. This investigation reports the PFAS composition of AFFFs used in firefighting in the GRULAC Region (Group of Latin American and Caribbean countries).

Discarded plastic bag is a main component of marine debris, posing potential threats to marine biota. This study was conducted to assess the potential effects of microplastics on juvenile Lates calcarifer. Fish were exposed via diet to two microplastic types from conventional polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable (Bio) plastic bags for 21 days. Antioxidative enzymes activity, intestinal microbiome and proteome were determined. PE and Bio microplastics were found to accumulate in gastrointestinal tracts, and no mortality was observed. Microplastics exposure did not induce significant antioxidant response except for the glutathione reductase (GR) modulation. Intestinal microbiome diversity decreased significantly in PE group based on Simpson index. Both types of microplastics induced proteome modulation by down-regulating proteins associated with immune homeostasis. Bio microplastics maintained higher intestinal microbial diversity and induced more proteins alteration than PE microplastics. This study provides toxicological insights into the impacts of conventional and biodegradable microplastics on juvenile L. calcarifer.

This study collected 100–1000 L of surface water from 70 to 74 sites in the Inner Gulf of Thailand in both dry and wet seasons to investigate the relationship between the spatiotemporal distribution of microplastics and environmental variables. The quantity of microplastics in the wet season (34.59 ± 46.02 pieces/L) was significantly higher than the dry season (8.70 ± 15.34 pieces/L). Spatial distribution revealed an abundance of microplastics in river estuaries and seasonal current circulations. Polymeric characterization results showed that the plastic samples primarily consisted of polypropylene and polyethylene. New functional groups, including carbonyl, hydroxyl, and vinyl groups, were found in the chemical structures of the microplastic samples. The amount of freshwater runoff and the negative relationship with salinity confirmed that the river is the key factor in the transportation of microplastics to the coastal sea.

Derelict fishing nets pose hazards to marine systems as they travel through the ocean or become ensnared on coral reefs. Understanding of the movement of nets within shallow atolls can help to optimize operations to protect these shallow reefs. In 2018, six derelict fishing nets at Manawai (Pearl and Hermes Reef) in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands were tagged with satellite-transmitting buoys and tracked for three years. This study reveals that nets that enter the atoll from the northeast travel southwest towards the center of the atoll, and nets in the center can remain ensnared on the same reef for at least three years. This study shows that satellite buoys are a successful approach to tracking derelict net movement, and can inform future debris removal missions.

The southern China coast areas are often invaded by typhoons, probably causing the redistribution of heavy metals in sediments. The knowledge of the influence of typhoons on the redistribution of heavy metals along the coasts is limited. The sea-floor sediments from the Leizhou Peninsula (LP) coast, southern China, were sampled to test the spatial distribution of the heavy metal before and after typhoons Barijat and Mangkhut in 2018. Results indicated that the coast suffered from varying levels of As contamination, while only minor enrichments were found in a few locations for other heavy metals. The pollution level on the western LP coast seemed to be higher than on the eastern coast. All heavy metals were mainly provided by terrigenous materials from the natural processes and were less affected by grain sizes. After the typhoon landings, more oxidation conditions promoted the deposits of As and the adsorption of Mo by MnO₂.
