In this study, an interval two-stage fuzzy fractional programming (TFFP) method is developed to facilitate collaborative governance of economy and water resources. Methods of interval programming, fuzzy programming, two-stage programming, and fractional programming are integrated within a general system optimization framework. The main contribution of TFFP is simultaneously addressing various uncertainties and tackling trade-offs between environmental and economic objectives in the optimized schemes for water resources allocation. A case study of a highly urbanized coastal city (i.e., Shenzhen) in China is provided as an example for demonstrating the proposed approach. According to the results, industrial sectors should receive 34.8% of total water supply, while agricultural sectors should receive 1.5%. For the spatial allocation of water resources, Bao An, Long Gang, and Fu Tian districts should be allocated 21.6%, 20.5%, and 14.8% water to promote the economic development. The discharge analysis indicates that chemical oxygen demand (CODcᵣ) and total phosphorus (TP) would be key pollutants. Moreover, the optimized seawater desalination volume would be negligibly influenced by price, while the upper bounds of desalination would be increased with the raising acceptable credibility levels in the period of 2031–2035. Analysis of desalination prices also reveals that the decision-makers should increase the scale of desalination in the period of 2021–2025. In addition, the effectiveness and applicability of TFFP would be evaluated under economic maximization scenarios. The result showed that the economic maximization scenario could obtain higher economic benefits, but it would be accompanied by a larger number of pollutant discharges. It is expected that this study will provide solid bases for planning water resources management systems in coastal regions.

Soil fumigants aim to control soil-borne diseases below levels that affect economic crop production, but their use also reduces the abundance of beneficial microorganisms. Previous studies have shown that adding various types of fertilizers to soil after fumigation can reshape the soil microbial community and regulate crop growth. We fumigated soil with dazomet (DZ) that had been cropped continuously for more than 20 years. After fumigation we applied silicon fertilizer, potassium humate organic fertilizer, Bacillus microbial fertilizer or a mixture of the last two. We studied the effects of different fertilizers treatments on the soil's physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, key soil pathogens and beneficial microbes. We found that fertilizers applied after fumigation promoted soil beneficial microorganisms (such as Fimicutes, Chloroflexi, Bacillus and Actinomadura) restoration; increased Fusarium and Phytophthora pathogen mortality, the content of ammonium nitrogen, sucrase enzyme activity; and increased strawberry fruit yield. A significant increase in strawberry yield was positively correlated with increases in beneficial microorganisms such as Gemmatimonadota, Firmicutes, Bacillus and Flavisolibacter. We concluded that organic fertilizer applied after fumigation significantly increased the number of beneficial microorganisms, improved the physicochemical properties of the soil, increased soil enzyme activities, inhibited the growth of soil pathogens to increase strawberry fruit yield. In summary, organic fertilizer activated soil beneficial microorganisms after soil fumigation, promoted soil health, and increased strawberry fruit yield.

Iron (III) co-precipitation with dissolved organic matter (DOM) is pervasive in many natural environments. However, the effects of DOM on the formation of Fe(III) hydroxysulfate (FHS) and its environmental implications are poorly understood. In this study, fulvic acid (FA) was used as a model DOM compound, and experiments were devised to investigate the effects of FA on the formation of FHS. In addition, the Pb(II) adsorption capabilities of FHSs biosynthesized under various FA dosages, including kinetics and sorption isotherm experiments, were conducted. These experiments showed that co-precipitation of FA promoted the formation of Fe-FA composites, FA-doped schwertmannite, and small particles of jarosite. Co-precipitates are more enriched in carboxyl (–COOH) functional groups due to their preferential binding with FHS. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and mechanisms of Pb onto the biosynthesized FHSs were then comprehensively characterized and modeled. Though the specific surface area decreased with increasing FA loading, the introduction of FA into FHSs increased Pb(II) adsorption, with the highest concentration of FA addition improving the removal capacity of Pb(II) to 91.54%. Kinetics studies and intra-particle diffusion models indicated that the adsorption of Pb(II) onto the FHSs was correlated with the number of active sites, and two adsorption steps: surface adsorption and the diffusion of Pb(II) in channels inside the biosynthesized FHSs, are suggested. The adsorption mechanism was attributed to cation exchange between Pb(II) and –OH and –COOH functional groups, and the co-precipitated FA provided additional sites for Pb(II) adsorption by FHS.

Although road traffic noise is the most important source of environmental noise emission in large cities, little is known about health burden. The present study was conducted to estimate the burden of diseases attributed to traffic noise in the metropolis of Tehran in 2017. Using noise maps provided by the municipality of Tehran, we calculated population exposure distribution in term of Ldₙ and Lₙᵢgₕₜ and the number of DALYs lost due to ischemic heart disease, hypertension, high sleep disturbance, annoyance and stroke endpoints based on the World Health Organization Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region. We applied published dose-response functions to estimate the traffic noise burden for high sleep disturbance and annoyance. We estimated 61,284 DALYs or 697 DALYs per 100,000 population attributed to traffic noise in Tehran for the reference year 2017. Highly sleep disturbance with a share of 58.74% of the DALYs was recognized as the most important contributor of disease burden, and noise annoyance with a share of 23.12% was ranked next. Ischemic heart disease (11.71%), stroke (5.12%), and hypertension (1.31%) were ranked third to fourth, respectively, in terms of the burden of disease caused by environmental noise. A considerable fraction of the population of Tehran lives in areas with an environmental noise higher than the standard level. The findings showed that traffic noise pollution is an important environmental risk factor in Tehran imposes the greatest burden on the community, mainly through highly sleep disturbance and noise annoyance endpoints.

Paraquat, a widely used herbicide, causes environmental pollution, and liver injury in humans and animals. As a natural compound in fruits, ellagic acid (EA) shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This study examines the beneficial effects of dietary EA against the paraquat-induced hepatic injury and further explores the underlying molecular mechanisms using a piglet model. Post-weaning piglets are fed basal diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, or 200 mg/kg EA for 3 weeks. At week 2, hepatic injury is induced by 4 mg/kg paraquat followed by 7 days recovery. EA supplementation significantly mitigates paraquat-induced hepatic fibrosis, steatosis, and high apoptotic rate. In agreement, EA supplementation reduces serum pro-inflammatory levels, ameliorates inflammatory cells infiltration into hepatic tissue, which are associated with suppressed NF-κB signaling during paraquat exposure. In addition, EA supplementation significantly improves activities of antioxidative enzymes which were correlated with activated Nrf2/Keap 1 signaling during paraquat exposure. Furthermore, EA supplementation restores cecal microbial community during paraquat exposure. The protective effect of EA is strongly linked with increased relative abundance of Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus amylovorus. Taken together, EA supplementation effectively reduced the occurrence of hepatic oxidative damage and inflammation induced by paraquat through modulating cecal microbial communities, which provides a novel nutritional therapeutic strategy for hepatic injury.

This systematic review aims to discover the plausible mechanism of Ozone in A.D., to boost translational research. The main focus of our review lies in understanding the effects of ozone pollution on the human brain and causing degenerative disease. Owing to the number of works carried out as preclinical evidence in association with oxidative stress and Alzheimer's disease and the lack of systematic review or meta-analysis prompted us to initiate a study on Alzheimer's risk due to ground-level ozone. We found relevant studies from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Proquest, DOAJ, and Scopus, narrowing to animal studies and the English language without any time limit. The searches will be re-run before the final analysis. This work was registered in Prospero with Reg ID CRD42022319360, followed the PRISMA-P framework, and followed the PICO approach involving Population, Intervention/Exposure, Comparison, and Outcomes data. Bibliographic details of 16 included studies were studied for Exposure dose of ozone, duration, exposure, and frequency with control and exposure groups. Primary and secondary outcomes were assessed based on pathology significance, and results were significant in inducing Alzheimer-like pathology by ozone. In conclusion, ozone altered oxidative stress, metabolic pathway, and amyloid plaque accumulation besides endothelial stress response involving mitochondria as the critical factor in ATP degeneration, caspase pathway, and neuronal damage. Thus, ozone is a criteria pollutant to be focused on in mitigating Alzheimer's Disease pathology.

Finding an appropriate satellite image as simultaneous as possible with the sampling time campaigns is challenging. Fusion can be considered as a method of integrating images and obtaining more pixels with higher spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. This paper investigated the impact of Landsat 8-OLI and Sentinel-2A data fusion on prediction of several toxic elements at a mine waste dump. The 30 m spatial resolution Landsat 8-OLI bands were fused with the 10 m Sentinel-2A bands using various fusion techniques namely hue-saturation-value (HSV), Brovey, principal component analysis (PCA), Gram-Schmidt (GS), wavelet, and area-to-point regression kriging (ATPRK). ATPRK was the best method preserving both spectral and spatial features of Landsat 8-OLI and Sentinel-2A after fusion. Furthermore, the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model developed on genetic algorithm (GA)-selected laboratory visible-near infrared-shortwave infrared (VNIR–SWIR) spectra yielded more accurate prediction results compared to the PLSR model calibrated on the entire spectra. It was hence, applied to both individual sensors and their ATPRK-fused image. In case of the individual sensors, except for As, Sentinel-2A provided more robust prediction models than Landsat 8-OLI. However, the best performances were obtained using the fused images, highlighting the potential of data fusion to enhance the toxic elements’ prediction models.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a representative endocrine disrupting compound used in a vast array of consumer products, and are being frequently substituted by its analogues, bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF). We aimed to examine the association between urinary bisphenol levels with obesity and lipid profiles in the general population to comprehensively evaluate its potential of metabolic disturbance. A representative sample of 1046 US adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2016) and 3268 Korean adults from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2015–2017) was analyzed. We examined the exposure levels of bisphenols and determined their associations with obesity, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) levels, and hypercholesterolemia prevalence through multiple linear, and binary/ordinal logistic regression models. In both populations, high BPA levels (lowest tertile vs. 2nd, 3rd tertiles) showed corresponding associations with lipid profile and obesity. BPA levels were associated with decreased HDL-C levels (Q3: β = −0.053, p = 0.08 (US); Q2: β = −0.030, p-0.03), increased TG levels (Q3: β = 0.121, p = 0.029 (US); Q3: β = 0.089, p = 0.021, and higher odds for obesity (Q3: OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.06, 2.35 (US); Q3: OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.78). Higher BPS levels were positively associated with obesity status, especially in US men (Q2: OR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.15, 2.96) and Korean women (Q3: OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 0.99, 1.64). A significant decrease in HDL-C (Q3: β = −0.088, p = 0.01) and elevated odds for obesity at higher BPF levels (Q3: OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.00, 2.56) was observed in US women. The findings of our study indicate that BPA and its analogues, BPS and BPF, are associated with lipid metabolism disorders in addition to obesity in adults. Given the increase in exposure to BPA alternatives, continuous biomonitoring, and further investigation of their health effects through prospective cohort studies are warranted.

Amoxicillin (AMO) and amikacin (AMK) are broad-spectrum antibiotics that are most preferably given post-delivery (normal and cesarian) in the maternity hospitals located in Sagar city (Madhya Pradesh), India. Both the antibiotics make their way through sewage/drainage systems into the environment in the form of metabolized and unmetabolized compounds. Growing concern about the contamination of wastewater by antibiotics requires fast, sensitive and eco-friendly techniques. Therefore a simple, rapid and environmental friendly chromatographic method has been developed for simultaneous determination of AMO and AMK in maternity hospital wastewater samples. A micellar liquid chromatographic (MLC) method was developed with a C₁₈ column (250 mm × 4.6 mm), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS; 0.15 M), 1-butanol (7%) as a modifier, pH 5 and photo diode detector (PDA) at 270 nm and 256 nm for AMO and AMK respectively. The method was fast with analysis time below 9 min. In the present MLC method, linearities (r > 0.998), limits of quantification in the range of 0.02–0.04 μg/mL, repeatabilities, and intermediate precision below 4.9% were adequate for the quantification of AMO and AMK. The proposed method can be utilized to detect and quantify both the antibiotics in various samples by hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, pollution control board, municipal corporations, etc.
