Environmental regulations often rely on limits or thresholds to indicate an acceptable pollutant load. Estimates of the Risk of Exceeding such Thresholds (RET) are often based on a single model deemed to be the best for the particular pollutant or particular case. However, if many models make different predictions but explain the data almost equally well, predictions based on a single model may omit important information contained in other models that fit almost as well as the “best” single model. More accurate assessments of RET may result if multiple models are considered. We compared performance of the single best model relative to that of an ensemble of models estimated by bagging (Bootstrap AGGregatING) using the example of soil P concentrations and the risk of exceeding environmental limits of soil P concentrations in the watershed of Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, USA. Bagging yielded significantly better predictions of the risk of exceeding a threshold level of soil P (99.6% accuracy versus 74% for single-model prediction at a 20 mg kg⁻¹ threshold). Use of multiple model techniques can improve estimates of RET over a range of realistic thresholds in other management situations where thresholds are important including eutrophication, desertification, fisheries, and many types of pollution control.

In recent years, arsenic (As) has received increased attention as humans may be exposed to it through occupational and environmental exposure. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) like other crops can uptake this element from the soil, which may lead to human exposure. Here, we report on a survey on arsenic in cured or processed tobacco leaves obtained from Africa, Asia, Europe, South and North America. A total of 1,431 leaf samples of flue-cured, burley, and Oriental tobaccos were obtained from various sampling locations during 2002 to 2004. Arsenic concentration in the samples averaged 0.4 ± 0.6 μg g⁻¹ as determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Recorded values from most samples showed that concentrations of arsenic were usually found at the lower end of the distribution. Significant differences were found among tobacco types, sampling locations, and crop years. Arsenic concentrations were rather low in the majority of regions investigated, which is compatible with data from the literature. However, sample size was small and sampling geographically restricted. Our results would need to be validated with a larger dataset.

The transport, bioavailability and fate of aqueous metals in rainfall-runoff are determined, in part, by speciation. In the framework of a monitoring program to investigate the predominant species of zinc, copper, and water chemistry in runoff subject to aviation land use and activities, two rainfall-runoff monitoring stations were installed at the international airport of Genoa (Italy). One catchment was a boarding area (airside) apron and the other a parking area for vehicles (landside). Utilizing water chemistry analyses, ion balances and speciation modelling for a series of five event loadings for each site, results indicated that Zn²⁺ dominated Zn speciation and Cu complexes with carbonate or dissolved organic matter, dominated Cu speciation. With respect to wash-off processes a mass limited behaviour was generally observed for particulate matter (measured as TSS) and TOC; while the mass delivery of aqueous metal species tended to be more proportionate with respect to runoff volume.

Urine-treated soils make a significant contribution to gaseous N losses to the atmosphere. Our goal was to investigate the influence of clay type and content on ammonia (NH₃) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from urine under different wetting-drying soil conditions and to relate these results to urine-N transformation processes in soil. Three types of silt loam soils and synthetic sand-clay aggregates with three different clay-dominated materials (kaolinite, montmorillonite and vermiculite) were used in this laboratory study. Bulk soil, 4-4.75 mm and 9.5-11.2 mm aggregates were incubated with synthetic urine at 50% and 75% saturation under aerobic conditions. Repeated urine application affected the properties of the aggregates depending on the type of clay present. Greater clay content increased aggregate stability and reduced NH₃ volatilization. The variation in clay ammonium (NH₄ ⁺) fixation capacities was reflected in NH₃ volatilization as well as in the onset of N₂O emissions, occurring first from kaolinite-dominated and last from vermiculite-dominated soils. Nitrous oxide production was greater in aggregates than in bulk soil, a difference that consistently increased with repeated urine applications for kaolinitic and vermiculitic treatments. A dual-peak N₂O emission pattern was found, with the second maximum increasing with the number of urine applications. Emission of ¹⁵N-labeled N₂ was found at 75% saturation in kaolinite and vermiculite-dominated samples. Anaerobic conditions were less pronounced with montmorillonite-dominated samples because shrink-swell action caused aggregate breakage.

Microbial communities in trickle bed air biofilters (TBABs) were evaluated under conditions of interchanging the feed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and VOC mixtures. Three independent TBABs (Biofilter “A,” “B,” and “C”) were run under interchanging VOCs conditions with different initial VOCs. Two aromatic compounds (toluene and styrene) and two oxygenated compounds (methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)) were interchanged as single solutes. Two other TBABs “D” and “E” were run for two VOC mixtures. Biofilter “D” had a VOC mixture with equal molar ratio of the four components and Biofilter “E” received a VOC mixture with its composition based on EPA 2003 emission report. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of 16S rRNA genes was used to assess the microbial richness in TBABs for treating the VOC mixtures and the impact of interchanging VOCs on the bacterial community structure in the biofilters. The results from DGGE indicated that the microbial community structure in the biofilter was different after each interchange of VOCs. Some bands of microbial species faded and some bands were strengthened. For the two TBABs treating VOC mixtures, the microbial species did not show significant difference, but the richness among these species was different from each other.

The pulp left after the extraction of juice from Citrus reticulate (kinnow), is a waste material, which was used as a potential sorbent for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in the present study. The effect of experimental parameters such as pH, biosorbent dosage, biosorbent particle size, initial metal concentrations, temperature, shaking speed and sorption time on the Cr removal is apparent from the obtained results. The Freundlich isotherm and pseudo second order kinetic models fitted well to the data of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) biosorption by Citrus reticulata waste biomass. Effect of several pretreatments such as gases, natural coagulant and many other chemicals on Cr(III) and Cr(VI) sorption capacity of Citrus reticulata waste biomass was first time analyzed in the present study. The metal sorption capacity of Citrus reticulata waste biomass after a specific pretreatment was not only related to the nature of chemical but also strongly dependent on the oxidation state of the metal.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg) were measured in six dated cores from four lakes in western Whatcom County, Washington, USA, that were at various bearings from a chlor-alkali plant, two municipal waste incinerators and a municipal sewage sludge incinerator. The importance of atmospheric emissions of Hg from these local municipal and industrial sources was evaluating by comparing the temporal trends in sedimentation of the lake cores with the emission history of each Hg species and by examining the geographical distribution of Hg sedimentation in relation to the region's primary wind pattern. Local municipal and industrial sources of atmospheric Hg were not responsible for the majority of the Hg in the upper layer of sediments of Whatcom County lakes because of (1) the significant enrichment of Hg in lake sediments prior to emissions of local industrial and municipal sources in 1964, (2) smaller increases in Hg concentrations occurred after 1964, (3) the similarity of maximum enrichments found in Whatcom County lakes to those in rural lakes around the world, (4) the inconsistency of the temporal trends in Hg sedimentation with the local emission history, and (5) the inconsistency of the geographic trends in Hg sedimentation with estimated deposition. Maximum enrichment ratios of Hg in lake sediments between 2 and 3 that are similar to rural areas in Alaska, Minnesota, and New England suggest that global sources of Hg were primarily responsible for increases of Hg in Whatcom County lakes beginning about 1900.

An assessment of the environmental quality of sediments at several locations of the Ría de Pontevedra (NW of Spain) was performed by integrating toxicity data obtained from multiespecies bioassays, chemical data from analysis of mussels and sediment, and physical-chemical parameters of the sampled sites. Subsequently, a toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) method intended for characterization and identification of the toxic agents was applied to the most polluted location by using the Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin bioassay. Both metals and organic compounds seem to be the causative agents of toxicity in elutriates of the studied sediment. Finally, multivariate statistics were applied for a better interpretation of results. A factor analysis was developed to establish the relationship among variables and to derive local sediment quality guidelines (SQG) by linking chemical contamination to biological effects. When multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis were performed to group the locations according to either the chemistry or toxicity data, P3-site was always clearly broken up the others. The different approaches all supported the same conclusion: site P3 can be considered highly contaminated by both trace metals and PAHs resulting in high toxicity for all the tested species.

Aluminium is a non-essential element for biological systems and is used in water and wastewater processes that rely on (micro)biological purification processes. The effect of Al doses ranging from 100 to 2,000 μg/l on the microbial dissolved oxygen uptake (respiration) over a 24-h period was assessed. Results indicated that Al can reduce the 24-h respiration, but the effects of pH depression due to Al dosing during testing should be taken into account.

Human exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and residential indoor and outdoor VOC levels had hitherto not been investigated in Turkey. This study details investigations of indoor, outdoor, and personal exposure to VOCs conducted simultaneously in 15 homes, 10 offices and 3 schools in Kocaeli during the summer of 2006 and the winter of 2006–2007. All VOC concentrations were collected by passive sampling over a 24-h period and analyzed using thermal desorption (TD) and a gas chromatography/flame ionization detector (GC/FID). Fifteen target VOCs were investigated and included benzene, toluene, m/p-xylene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, styrene, cyclohexane, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, n-heptane, n-hexane, n-decane, n-nonane, n-octane and n-undecane. Toluene levels were the highest in terms of indoor, outdoor, and personal exposure, followed by m/p-xylene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, styrene, benzene and n-hexane. In general, personal exposure concentrations appeared to be slightly higher than indoor air concentrations. Both personal exposure and indoor concentrations were generally markedly higher than those observed outdoors. Indoor target compound concentrations were generally more strongly correlated with outdoor concentrations in the summer than in winter. Indoor/outdoor ratios of target compounds were generally greater than unity, and ranged from 0.42 to 3.03 and 0.93 to 6.12 in the summer and winter, respectively. Factor analysis, correlation analyses, indoor/outdoor ratios, microenvironment characteristics, responses to questionnaires and time activity information suggested that industry, and smoking represent the main emission sources of the VOCs investigated. Compared with the findings of earlier studies, the level of target analytes in indoor air were higher for several target VOCs, indicating a possible trend toward increased inhalation exposure to these chemicals in residential environments.
