Mercury and lead exposure in avian scavengers from the Pacific Northwest suggest risks to California condors: Implications for reintroduction and recovery

Mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) are widespread contaminants that pose risks to avian scavengers. In fact, Pb exposure is the primary factor limiting population recovery in the endangered California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) and Hg can impair avian reproduction at environmentally relevant exposures. The Pacific Northwest region of the US was historically part of the condor's native range, and efforts are underway to expand recovery into this area. To identify potential threats to reintroduced condors we assessed foraging habitats, Hg and Pb exposure, and physiological responses in two surrogate avian scavenger species (common ravens [Corvus corax] and turkey vultures [Cathartes aura] across the region between 2012 and 2016. Mercury exposure near the Pacific coast was 17–27-fold higher than in inland areas, and stable carbon and sulfur isotopes ratios indicated that coastal scavengers were highly reliant on marine prey. In contrast, Pb concentrations were uniformly elevated across the region, with 18% of the birds exposed to subclinical poisoning levels. Elevated Pb concentrations were associated with lower delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (δ-ALAD) activity, and in ravens there was an interactive effect between Hg and Pb on fecal corticosterone concentrations. This interaction indicated that the effects of Hg and Pb exposure on the stress axis are bidirectional, and depend on the magnitude of simultaneous exposure to the other contaminant. Our results suggest that condors released to the Pacific Northwest may be exposed to both elevated Hg and Pb, posing challenges to management of future condor populations in the Pacific Northwest. Developing a robust monitoring program for reintroduced condors and surrogate scavengers will help both better understand the drivers of exposure and predict the likelihood of impaired health. These findings provide a strong foundation for such an effort, providing resource managers with valuable information to help mitigate potential risks.

Maternal exposure to ambient air pollution has been related to oral clefts in offspring; however, the epidemiologic evidence is equivocal. Especially, the association between high levels of exposure to ambient air pollution during pregnancy and oral clefts remains unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether high levels of maternal exposure to PM2.5, PM10, O3, CO and SO2 are related to increased risk of oral clefts in Wuhan, China. A population-based study was conducted using cohort of 105,927 live-born infants, fetal deaths, and stillbirths during a two-year period from 2011 to 2013. For each participant, weekly and monthly averages of daily mean concentrations for each pollutant were estimated. Multiple logistic regression analyses were constructed to quantify the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for the relationship between each air pollutant and oral clefts while controlling for key covariates. Using monthly averages, a cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) was associated with PM2.5 (aORs 2nd month = 1.34, CI:1.19–1.49; aORs 3rd month=1.14, CI:1.02–1.28), PM10 (aORs 2nd month = 1.11, CI:1.00–1.23) and CO (aORs 2nd month = 1.31, CI:1.14–1.51; aORs 3rd month = 1.17, CI:1.03–1.33). A cleft palate only (CPO) was associated with PM2.5 (aORs 2nd month = 1.24, CI: 1.03–1.48), and O3 (aORs 2nd month = 1.21, CI: 1.03–1.42; aORs 3rd month = 1.18, CI: 1.02–1.37). Our findings reveal an association between air pollutants exposure and the risk of oral clefts. Future studies are needed to confirm these associations, and clarify the causality related to specific pollutants during the most relevant vulnerable exposure time windows for oral clefts during pregnancy.

Bisphenol S (BPS) has been progressively used due to the potential safety problems of bisphenol A (BPA). Thus Human studies are needed to investigate the developmental effects of BPS. In this study, the impact of maternal BPS exposure on birth outcomes was evaluated with linear and logistic regression models. BPS was analyzed in spot urine samples collected from 985 pregnant women at admission to labor. It was found in 93.7% of the urine samples with the specific gravity adjusted geometric mean concentration of 0.17 μg/L. One ln-unit increase in urinary BPS was associated with a 0.72-day increase in pregnancy duration (95% CI: 0.34, 1.09). When stratified by fetal sex, each ln-unit increase in maternal urinary BPS was significantly correlated with increased gestational age [adjusted β = 1.02, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.47, 1.57] and increased odds of late term birth [adjusted odds ratio = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.67] for girls, but not significantly for boys. Including maternal urinary BPA and BPS in one model did not change the results. Associations of BPS with birth weight or length were not observed. This is the first report about BPS exposure for pregnant women from China. Higher maternal urinary BPS concentrations were associated with increased gestational age, suggesting maternal BPS exposure may interfere with pregnancy duration. The findings require replication but reveal the probable risks posed by the developmental BPS exposure.

Antibiotic resistance is an increasingly important environmental pollutant with direct consequences for human health. Identification of environmental sources of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) makes it possible to follow their evolution and prevent their entry into the clinical setting. ARGs have been found in environmental sources exogenous to the original source and previous studies have shown that these genes are capable of being transferred from livestock to humans. Due to the nature of farming and the slaughter of ruminants for food, humans interact with these animals in close proximity, and for this reason it is important to consider the risks to human health. In this study, we characterised the ARG populations in the ovine rumen, termed the resistome. This was done using the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) to identify the presence of genes conferring resistance to antibiotics within the rumen. Genes were successfully mapped to those that confer resistance to a total of 30 different antibiotics. Daptomycin was identified as the most common antibiotic for which resistance is present, suggesting that ruminants may be a source of daptomycin ARGs. Colistin resistance, conferred by the gene pmrE, was also found to be present within all samples, with an average abundance of 800 counts. Due to the high abundance of some ARGs (against daptomycin) and the presence of rare ARGs (against colistin), we suggest further study and monitoring of the rumen resistome as a possible source of clinically relevant ARGs.

Multiple cross-sectional studies indicated an association between hypertension and road traffic noise and they were recently synthetized in a WHO systematic evidence review. However, recent years have seen a growing body of high-quality, large-scale research, which is missing from the WHO review. Therefore, we aimed to close that gap by conducting an updated systematic review and meta-analysis on the exposure-response relationship between residential road traffic noise and the risk of hypertension in adults. Studies were identified by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Internet, conference proceedings, reference lists, and expert archives in English, Russian, and Spanish through August 5, 2017. The risk of bias for each extracted estimate and the overall quality of evidence were evaluated using a list of predefined safeguards against bias related to different study characteristics and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system, respectively. The inverse variance heterogeneity (IVhet) model was used for meta-analysis. The possibility of publication bias was evaluated by funnel and Doi plots, and asymmetry in these was tested with Egger's test and the Luis Furuya-Kanamori index, respectively. Sensitivity analyses included leave-one-out meta-analysis, subgroup meta-analysis with meta-regressions, and non-linear exposure-response meta-analysis. Based on seven cohort and two case-control studies (n = 5 514 555; 14 estimates; Lden range ≈ 25–90 dB(A)), we found “low” evidence of RR per 10 dB(A) = 1.018 (95% CI: 0.984, 1.053), moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 46%), and no publication bias. In the subgroup of cohort studies, we found “moderate” evidence of RR per 10 dB(A) = 1.018 (95% CI: 0.987, 1.049), I2 = 31%, and no publication bias. In conclusion, residential road traffic noise was associated with higher risk of hypertension in adults, but the risk was lower than previously reported in the systematic review literature.

Bromoxynil is a widely used nitrile herbicide applied to maize and other cereals in many countries. To date, still little is known about bromoxynil turnover and the structural identity of bromoxynil non-extractable residues (NER) which are reported to occur in high amounts. Therefore, we investigated the microbial turnover of ¹³C-labeled bromoxynil for 32 days. A focus was laid on the estimation of biogenic NER based on the turnover of ¹³C into amino acids (AA). At the end, 25% of ¹³C₆-bromoxynil equivalents were mineralized, 2% assigned to extractable residues and 72.5% to NER. Based on 12% in the ¹³C-total AA and an assumed share of AA of 50% in microbial biomass we arrived at 24% of total ¹³C-biogenic NER. About 33% of the total ¹³C-NER could thus be explained by ¹³C-biogenic NER; 67% was unknown and by definition xenobiotic NER with potential for toxicity. The ¹³C label from ¹³C₆-bromoxynil was mainly detected in the humic acids (28.5%), but significant amounts were also found in non-humics (17.6%), fulvic acids (13.2%) and humins (12.7%). The ¹³C-total amino acids hydrolyzed from humic acids, humins and fulvic acids amounted to 5.2%, 6.1% and 1.2% of ¹³C₆-bromoxynil equivalents, respectively, corresponding to total ¹³C-biogenic NER amounts of 10.4%, 12.2% and 2.4%. The humins contained mostly ¹³C-biogenic NER, whereas the humic and fulvic acids may be dominated by the xenobiotic NER. Due to the high proportion of unknown ¹³C-NER and particularly in the humic and fulvic acids, future studies should focus on the detailed characterization of these fractions.

The gut microbiome is sensitive to diet and environmental exposures and is involved in the regulation of host metabolism. Additionally, gut inflammation is an independent risk factor for the development of metabolic diseases, specifically atherosclerosis and diabetes. Exposures to dioxin-like pollutants occur primarily via ingestion of contaminated foods and are linked to increased risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases. We aimed to elucidate the detrimental impacts of dioxin-like pollutant exposure on gut microbiota and host gut health and metabolism in a mouse model of cardiometabolic disease. We utilized 16S rRNA sequencing, metabolomics, and regression modeling to examine the impact of PCB 126 on the microbiome and host metabolism and gut health. 16S rRNA sequencing showed that gut microbiota populations shifted at the phylum and genus levels in ways that mimic observations seen in chronic inflammatory diseases. PCB 126 reduced cecum alpha diversity (0.60 fold change; p = 0.001) and significantly increased the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio (1.63 fold change; p = 0.044). Toxicant exposed mice exhibited quantifiable concentrations of PCB 126 in the colon, upregulation of Cyp1a1 gene expression, and increased markers of intestinal inflammation. Also, a significant correlation between circulating Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Bifidobacterium was evident and dependent on toxicant exposure. PCB 126 exposure disrupted the gut microbiota and host metabolism and increased intestinal and systemic inflammation. These data imply that the deleterious effects of dioxin-like pollutants may be initiated in the gut, and the modulation of gut microbiota may be a sensitive marker of pollutant exposures.

The environment is one of the main reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) but multidrug resistant (MDR) environmental isolates are barely characterised. As suggested by the name, Pedobacter species have been predominantly isolated from soils, but are also recovered from water (including drinking water), chilled food, fish, compost, sludge, glaciers and other extreme environments. The susceptibility phenotype of Pedobacter lusitanus NL19 (isolated from a deactivated uranium mine), its closely related species and the genus type strain were investigated. All strains are MDR bacteria, resistant to β-lactams, colistin, aminoglycosides and ciprofloxacin. Therefore, Pedobacter spp. are likely intrinsically resistant to β-lactams (including ertapenem) and to other three classes of antibiotics. 6%–8% of their total protein-encoding genes encode a diverse collection of putative ARGs, including β-lactamases. These enzymes are highly abundant in all the other Pedobacter strains with sequenced genomes, especially class C, class B3 and class A. LUS-1 and PLN-1 were further characterised in E. coli. LUS-1 is a class A β-lactamase and it conferred an increase in the MIC of cefotaxime, albeit very low. PLN-1 is a class B3 β-lactamase with carbapenemase activity, conferring resistance to ertapenem and a 66x and 16x increase in the MIC of imipenem and meropenem, respectively. PLN-1 also hydrolyses ampicillin, 1st and 3rd generation cephalosporins, and at a lower extent cephamycins and 4th generation cephalosporins. Therefore, Pedobacter spp. encode a large and diverse arsenal of resistance mechanisms that make them environmental superbugs.

Microplastics (<5 mm) have been found in many fish species, from most marine environments. However, the mechanisms underlying microplastic ingestion by fish are still unclear, although they are important to determine the pathway of microplastics along marine food webs. Here we conducted experiments in the laboratory to examine microplastic ingestion (capture and swallowing) and egestion by juveniles of the planktivorous palm ruff, Seriolella violacea (Centrolophidae). As expected, fish captured preferentially black microplastics, similar to food pellets, whereas microplastics of other colours (blue, translucent, and yellow) were mostly co-captured when floating close to food pellets. Microplastics captured without food were almost always spit out, and were only swallowed when they were mixed with food in the fish's mouth. Food probably produced a ‘gustatory trap’ that impeded the fish to discriminate and reject the microplastics. Most fish (93% of total) egested all the microplastics after 7 days, on average, and 49 days at most, substantially longer than food pellets (<2 days). No acute detrimental effects of microplastics on fish were observable, but potential sublethal effects of microplastics on the fish physiological and behavioural responses still need to be tested. This study highlights that visually-oriented planktivorous fish, many species of which are of commercial value and ecological importance within marine food webs, are susceptible to ingest microplastics resembling or floating close to their planktonic prey.

Marine plastic pollution is present in all oceans, including remote oceanic islands. Despite the increasing number of articles on plastic pollution in the last years, there is still a lack of studies in islands, that are biodiversity hotspots when compared to the surrounding ocean, and even other recognized highly biodiverse marine environments. Articles published in the peer reviewed literature (N = 20) were analysed according to the presence of macro (>5 mm) and microplastics (<5 mm) on beaches and the marine habitats immediately adjacent to 31 islands of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The first articles date from the 1980s, but most were published in the 2000s. Articles on macroplastics were predominant in this review (N = 12). Beaches were the most studied environment, possibly due to easy access. The main focus of most articles was the spatial distribution of plastics associated with variables such as position of the beach in relation to wind and currents. Very few studies have analysed plastics colonization by organisms or the identification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Islands of the North/South Atlantic and Caribbean Sea were influenced by different sources of macroplastics, being marine-based sources (i.e., fishing activities) predominant in the Atlantic Ocean basin. On the other hand, in the Caribbean Sea, land-based sources were more common.
