Emerging and legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water, sediment, and air of the Bohai Sea and its surrounding rivers

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) contamination in the Bohai Sea and its surrounding rivers has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the distribution of PFASs in multiple environmental media and their distributions between the suspended particles and dissolved phases. In this study, surface water, surface sediment, and air samples were collected at the Bohai Sea to investigate the concentration and distribution of 39 targeted PFASs. Moreover, river water samples from 35 river estuaries were collected to estimate PFAS discharge fluxes to the Bohai Sea. The results showed that total ionic compound (Σi-PFASs) concentrations ranged from 19.3 to 967 ng/L (mean 125 ± 152 ng/L) in the water and 0.70–4.13 ng/g dw (1.78 ± 0.76 ng/g) in surface sediment of the Bohai Sea, respectively. In the estuaries, Σi-PFAS concentrations were ranged from 10.5 to 13500 ng/L (882 ± 2410 ng/L). In the air, ΣPFAS (Σi-PFASs + Σn-PFASs) concentrations ranged from 199 to 678 pg/m³ (462 ± 166 pg/m³). Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the predominant compound in the seawater, sediment, and river water; in the air, 8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol was predominant. Xiaoqing River discharged the largest Σi-PFAS flux to the Bohai Sea, which was estimated as 12,100 kg/y. Some alternatives, i.e., 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate acid (6:2 FTSA), hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA), and chlorinated 6:2 polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (Cl-6:2 PFESA), showed higher levels than or comparable concentrations to those of the C8 legacy PFASs in some sampling sites. The particle-derived distribution coefficient in seawater was higher than that in the river water. Using high resolution mass spectrometry, 29 nontarget emerging PFASs were found in 3 river water and 3 seawater samples. Further studies should be conducted to clarify the sources and ecotoxicological effects of these emerging PFASs in the Bohai Sea area.

The effect of chronic exposure of freshwater cladoceran Daphnia magna to low, environmentally relevant concentrations i.e 4 μgL⁻¹of ibuprofen (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) in a laboratory experiment was studied. We observed the key life history traits of first and fifth generation individuals: age and size at first reproduction, number of first clutch eggs and individual growth rate. Moreover, chosen molecular/subcellular markers of experimental animals stress response such as triglyceride content, heat shock proteins (HSP) expression and DNA:RNA ratio were collected. Overall, chronic exposure to ibuprofen had no significant effect on the molecular markers nor on the life history parameters of the Daphnia. It did, however, caused lethal morphological deformities in embryos and juvenile daphnids. Depending on the clonal affiliation, exposure to a low dosage of ibuprofen over five generations resulted in the deformation of ∼3%–∼10% of the first clutch of offspring. Also, up to 90% of females carried at least one deformed embryo. This is the first time that research has revealed such an effect of ibuprofen on D. magna.

The association between temperature and mortality has been widely reported. However, it remains largely unclear whether inflammation-related diseases, caused by excessive or inappropriate inflammatory reaction, may be affected by ambient temperature, particularly in low-income areas.To explore the association between ambient temperature and clinical visits for inflammation-related diseases in rural villages in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, during 2012─2015.Daily data on inflammation-related diseases and weather conditions were collected from 258 villages in Haiyuan (161 villages) and Yanchi (97 villages) counties during 2012─2015. A Quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear model was used to examine the association between temperature and clinical visits for inflammation-related diseases. Stratified analyses were performed by types of diseases including arthritis, gastroenteritis, and gynecological inflammations.During the study period, there were 724,788 and 288,965 clinical visits for inflammation-related diseases in Haiyuan and Yanchi, respectively. Both exposure to low (RR: 2.045, 95% CI: 1.690, 2.474) and high temperatures (RR: 1.244, 95% CI: 1.107, 1.399) were associated with increased risk of total inflammation-related visits in Haiyuan county. Low temperatures were associated with increased risks of all types of inflammation-related diseases in Yanchi county (RR: 4.344, 95% CI: 2.887, 6.535), while high temperatures only affected gastroenteritis (RR: 1.274, 95% CI: 1.040, 1.561). Moderate temperatures explained approximately 26% and 33% of clinical visits due to inflammation-related diseases in Haiyuan and Yanchi, respectively, with the burden attributable to cold exposure higher than hot exposure. The reference temperature values ranged from 17 to 19 in Haiyuan, and 12 to 14 in Yanchi for all types of clinical visits.Our findings add additional evidence for the adverse effect of suboptimal ambient temperature and provide useful information for public health programs targeting people living in rural villages.

Atrazine contamination is of great concern due to its widespread occurrence in shallow lakes. Here, the distribution and degradation of atrazine in acidic and alkaline lake systems were investigated. Meanwhile, the bacterial communities in different sediments and the effects of environmental factors on atrazine-degrading bacteria were evaluated. In the lake systems without plants, atrazine levels in sediment interstitial water reached peak concentrations on the 4th d. More than 90% of atrazine was then degraded in all sediment interstitial water by day 30. Meanwhile, the degradation rate of atrazine in alkaline sediments was faster than that in acidic sediments. Values of hydroxylated metabolites in the acidic lake sediments tended to be greater. Moreover, the amounts of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicute, Nitrospinae, Aminicenantes, Ignavibacteriae and Saccharibacteria in acidic Tangxunhu Lake sediments were significantly different from alkaline Honghu Lake sediments, while the amounts of Cyanobacteria and Saccharibacteria in sediments treated with atrazine were significantly greater than those in sediments without atrazine (P < 0.05). Notably, pH was the most relevant environmental factor in the quantitative variation of atrazine-degrading bacteria, including in Clostridium-sensu-stricto, Pseudomonas, Comamonas and Rhodobacter. The Mantel test results indicated that the degradation of atrazine in different sediments was mainly affected by the sediment physicochemical properties rather than by the addition of atrazine and the cultivation of hydrophytes.

Indoor biomass burning is a major contributor to the emission of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in China. To date, estimates of PAH emissions from the burning of biomass have involved considerable uncertainty, mostly from the lack of real-world measurements of emission factors. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation on PAH emissions from biomass burning in real-world cooking stoves in three Chinese provinces. PAH emission factors, in both particle- and gas-phase, from 11 fuel-stove combinations were measured and the provincial emissions were estimated based on the measured emission factors and fuel consumption. The measured PAH₂₈ emission factors (including 16 US EPA priority PAHs and 12 non-priority PAHs) ranged from 42 mg/kg to 370 mg/kg, with an order of magnitude difference, which was mostly affected by fuel type. The emission factors measured in this study were generally higher than those reported in laboratory studies and were comparable with field studies. The gas-particle distribution indicated that the absorption of PAHs by organic carbon in particulate matter (PM) was the dominant sorption mechanism in gas-particle distribution. The composition profile was different from previous studies, especially for non-priority PAHs, which are highly toxic and should be given more attention. Following the disparities in composition profiles, our study suggests that source apportionment based on single- or multi-diagnostic ratios may lead to large bias and uncertainties. It appears that the toxicity potential of PAHs in northern China emitted from combustion of crop residues is greater than that in southern China where PAHs are mainly emitted from wood combustion.

Volcanic eruptions are important components of natural disturbances that provide a model to explore the effects of volcanic eruption disturbances on soil microorganisms. Despite widespread research, to the best of our knowledge, no studies of volcanic eruption disturbances have investigated the effects on soil microbial communities in the montane meadow steppe. To address this gap, we meticulously investigated the characteristics of the soil microbial communities from the volcano and steppe sites using Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. Hierarchical clustering analysis and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that the soil microbial communities from the volcano and steppe sites differed. The diversity and richness of the soil microbial communities from the steppe sites were significantly higher than at the volcano sites (P < 0.05), and the soil microbial communities in the steppe sites had higher stability. The effects of volcanic eruption disturbances on the bacterial community development are greater than its effects on the fungal communities. The environmental filtering of volcanic eruptions selectively retained some special microorganisms (i.e., Conexibacter, Agaricales, and Gaiellales) with strong adaptability to the environmental disturbances, enhanced metabolic activity for sodium and calcium reabsorption, and increased relative abundances of the lichenized saprotrophs. The soil microbial communities from the volcano and steppe sites cooperate to form complex networks of species interactions, which are strongly influenced by the interaction of the soil and vegetation factors. Our findings provide new information on the effects of volcanic eruption disturbances on the soil microbial communities in the montane meadow steppe.

Edible cod liver products including cod liver oil and canned cod liver, sampled over the last five decades from the North Atlantic region, including the Baltic Sea were analysed for a set of persistent and toxicologically significant polychlorinated naphthalene (PCN) congeners with some of the highest relative potencies (dioxin-like toxicity) among PCNs. The targeted congeners showed a near-universality of occurrence in all samples apart from the most recent sample of cod liver oil which was assumed to be highly purified, as cod livers from the same period and location showed appreciable amounts of PCNs. The majority of dominant congeners in legacy technical PCN mixtures were absent or occurred in low concentrations, raising the possibility that congeners arising from combustion related sources may be acquiring a greater significance following the decline and elimination of PCN production. The apparent appreciation in the relative amounts of PCN#70 in the last three to four decades may provide support for this view. The PCN contribution to dioxin-like toxic equivalence (TEQ) that was estimated for these samples (range 1.2–15.9 pg TEQ g⁻¹) was significant in comparison to the EU regulated value of 1.75 pg TEQ g⁻¹ for dioxins in fish oils. Most of the TEQ was associated with PCNs 66/67, 64/68, 69 and 73. Although metabolic processes are likely to influence this distribution, the profile is a little different to that observed in the tissues of higher order animals where PCNs #66/67 and #73 may contribute approximately 90% to the summed TEQ.

Malaysia is a tropical country that is highly dependent on surface water for its raw water supply. Unfortunately, surface water is vulnerable to pollution, especially in developed and dense urban catchments. Therefore, in this study, a methodology was developed for an extensive temporal water quality index (WQI) and classification analysis, simulations of various pollutant discharge scenarios using QUAL2K software, and maps with NH₃–N as the core pollutant using an integrated QUAL2K-GIS. It was found that most of the water quality stations are categorized as Class III (slightly polluted to polluted). These stations are surrounded by residential areas, industries, workshops, restaurants and wet markets that contribute to the poor water quality levels. Additionally, low WQI values were reported in 2010 owing to development and agricultural activities. However, the WQI values improved during the wet season. High concentrations of NH₃–N were found in the basin, especially during dry weather conditions. Three scenarios were simulated, i.e. 10%, 50% and 70% of pollution discharge into Skudai river using a calibrated and validated QUAL2K model. Model performance was evaluated using the relative percentage difference. An inclusive graph showing the current conditions and pollution reduction scenarios with respect to the distance of Skudai river and its tributaries is developed to determine the WQI classification. Comprehensive water quality maps based on NH₃–N as the core pollutant are developed using integrated QUAL2K-GIS to illustrate the overall condition of the Skudai river. High NH₃–N in the Skudai River affects water treatment plant operations. Pollution control of more than 90% is required to improve the water quality classification to Class II. The methodology and analysis developed in this study can assist various stakeholders and authorities in identifying problematic areas and determining the required percentage of pollution reduction to improve the Skudai River water quality.

Particulate air pollution in cities comprises a variety of harmful compounds, including fine iron rich particles, which can persist in the air for long time, increasing the adverse exposure of humans and living things to them. We studied street tree (among other species, Cordyline australis, Fraxinus excelsior and F. pensylvanica) barks as biological collectors of these ubiquitous airborne particles in cities. Properties were determined by the environmental magnetism method, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy, and analyzed by geostatistical methods. Trapped particles are characterized as low-coercivity (mean ± s.d. value of remanent coercivity Hcᵣ = 37.0 ± 2.4 mT) magnetite-like minerals produced by a common pollution source identified as traffic derived emissions. Most of these Fe rich particles are inhalable (PM₂.₅), as determined by the anhysteretic ratio χARM/χ (0.1–1 μm) and scanning electron microscopy (<1 μm), and host a variety of potentially toxic elements (Cr, Mo, Ni, and V). Contents of magnetic particles vary in the study area as observed by magnetic proxies for pollution, such as mass specific magnetic susceptibility χ (18.4–218 × 10⁻⁸ m³ kg⁻¹) and in situ magnetic susceptibility κᵢₛ (0.2–20.2 × 10⁻⁵ SI). The last parameter allows us doing in situ magnetic biomonitoring, being convenient because of species preservation, measurement time, and fast data processing for producing prediction maps of magnetic particle pollution.

Our knowledge of the processes leading to the bioaccumulation of rare earth elements (REE) in aquatic biota is limited. As the contamination of freshwater ecosystems by anthropogenic REE have recently been reported, it becomes increasingly urgent to understand how these metals are transferred to freshwater organisms in order to develop appropriate guidelines. We exposed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to an REE, yttrium (Y), to either a range of Y-contaminated prey (Daphnia magna) or a range of Y-contaminated water. For the feeding experiment, the relationship between the Y assimilation by O. mykiss and the Y subcellular fractionation in D. magna was evaluated. Assimilation efficiency of Y by O. mykiss was low, ranging from 0.8 to 3%. These values were close to the proportion of Y accumulated in D. magna cytosol, 0.6–2%, a theoretical trophically available fraction. Moreover, under our laboratory conditions, water appeared as a poor source of Y transfer to O. mykiss. Regardless of the source of contamination, a similar pattern of Y bioaccumulation among O. mykiss tissues was revealed: muscles < liver < gills < intestine. We conclude that the trophic transfer potential of Y is low and the evaluation of Y burden in prey cytosol appears to be a relevant predictor of Y assimilation by their consumers.
