Ecotoxicological effects of plastics on plants, soil fauna and microorganisms: A meta-analysis
2022
Huo, Yuxin | Dijkstra, Feike A. | Possell, Malcolm | Singh, Balwant
The interactions of plastics and soil organisms are complex and inconsistent observations on the effects of plastics on soil organisms have been made in published studies. In this study, we assessed the effects of plastic exposure on plants, fauna and microbial communities, with a meta-analysis. Using a total of 2936 observations from 140 publications, we analysed how responses in plants, soil fauna and microorganisms depended on the plastic concentration, size, type, species and exposure media. We found that overall plastics caused substantial detrimental effects to plants and fauna, but less so to microbial diversity and richness. Plastic concentration was one of the most important factors explaining variations in plant and faunal responses. Larger plastics (>1 μm) caused unfavourable changes to plant growth, germination and oxidative stress, while nanoplastics (NPs; ≤ 1 μm) only increased oxidative stress. On the contrary, there was a clear trend showing that small plastics adversely affected fauna reproduction, survival and locomotion than large plastics. Plant responses were indifferent to plastic type, with most studies conducted using polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) plastics, but soil fauna were frequently more sensitive to PS than to PE exposure. Plant species played a vital role in some parameters, with the effects of plastics being considerably greater on vegetable plants than on cereal plants.

Wu, Bing | Qu, Yingli | Lu, Yifu | Ji, Saisai | Ding, Liang | Li, Zheng | Zhang, Miao | Gu, Heng | Sun, Qi | Ying, Bo | Zhao, Feng | Zheng, Xulin | Qiu, Yidan | Zhang, Zheng | Zhu, Ying | Cao, Zhaojin | Lv, Yuebin | Shi, Xiaoming
Sea fish contain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) which have been found to reduce triglyceride (TG) levels. However, sea fish may contain pollutants such as mercury which cause oxidative stress and increase TG levels. Therefore, the relationship between sea fish and TG remains unclear. We aimed to explore whether blood mercury (BHg) can affect the effect of sea fish consumption frequency on TG level among Chinese adults. A total of 10,780 participants were included in this study. BHg levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The associations of sea fish consumption frequency with BHg and TG levels as well as the association of BHg with TG levels were evaluated using multiple linear regression. Causal mediation analysis was used to evaluate the mediation effect of BHg levels on the association of sea fish consumption frequency with TG levels. The frequency of sea fish consumption showed a negative association with TG level. Compared with the participants who never ate sea fish, the TG level decreased by 0.193 mmol/L in those who ate sea fish once a week or more [β (95%CI): −0.193 (−0.370, −0.015)]. Significant positive associations were observed of BHg with TG levels. With one unit increase of log2-transformed BHg, the change of TG level was 0.030 mmol/L [0.030 (0.009, 0.051)]. The association between sea fish consumption and TG was mediated by log2-transformed BHg [total effect = −0.037 (−0.074, −0.001); indirect effect = 0.009 (0.004, 0.015)], and the proportion mediated by log2-transformed BHg was 24.25%. BHg may reduce the beneficial effect of sea fish consumption frequency on TG levels among Chinese adults. Overall, sea fish consumption has more benefits than harms to TG.

Pollution from vehicle tires has received world-wide research attention due to its ubiquity and toxicity. In this study, we measured various tire-derived contaminants semi-quantitatively in archived extracts of passive air samplers deployed in 18 major cities that comprise the Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) Network (GAPS-Megacities). Analysis was done on archived samples, which represent one-time weighted passive air samples from each of the 18 monitoring sites. The target analytes included cyclic amines, benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) derivatives. Of the analyzed tire-derived contaminants, diphenylguanidine was the most frequently detected analyte across the globe, with estimated concentrations ranging from 45.0 pg/m³ in Beijing, China to 199 pg/m³ in Kolkata, India. The estimated concentrations of 6PPD-quinone and total benzothiazoles (including benzothiazole, 2-methylthio-benzothiazole, 2-methyl-benzothiazole, 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole) peaked in the Latin American and the Caribbean region at 1 pg/m³ and 100 pg/m³, respectively. In addition, other known tire-derived compounds, such as hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine, phenylguanidine, and various transformation products of 6PPD, were also monitored and characterized semi-quantitatively or qualitatively. This study presents some of the earliest data on airborne concentrations of chemicals associated with tire-wear and shows that passive sampling is a viable techniquefor monitoring airborne tire-wear contamination. Due to the presence of many tire-derived contaminants in urban air across the globe as highlighted by this study, there is a need to determine the associated exposure and toxicity of these chemicals to humans.

Surgun-Acar, Yonca
Micro and nanoplastics are new generation contaminants of global concern. It is important to evaluate the effects on edible products due to the presence of micro- and nano-sized plastics in the treated wastewater. A hydroponic experiment was carried out to explore the effect of polsytrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs; 20 nm) at different concentrations (0, 12.5, 25, and 50 mg L⁻¹) on Glycine max L. (soybean) seedlings for 7-days. In the current study, firstly the uptake of PS-NPs by Glycine max L. (soybean) roots were confirmed by laser confocal scanning microscope. Exposure to PS-NPs, negatively affected growth parameters and increased Fe, Zn and Mn contents in roots and leaves of soybean seedlings. PS-NPs treatments caused oxidative stress in soybean seedlings. The hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde contents, showed similar increase pattern in seedlings exposed to PS-NPs. Response to PS-NPs, the level of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and guaiacol peroxidase) and proline content were generally enhanced in roots and leaves of soybean. The expression level of stress-related genes examined in the study included CSD5, FSD3, APX1, and POD up-regulated in PS-NPs treated-soybean seedlings in a tissue specific manner. The results of the present study showed the adverse effects of PS-NPs on soybean seedlings, which may have important implications for the risk assessment of NPs on crop production and environmental safety.

2022

Air pollution is becoming serious in developing country, and how to quantify the role of local emission and/or meteorological factors is very important for government to implement policy to control pollution. Here, we use a random forest model, a machine learning (ML) approach, combined with a de-weather method to analyze the PM₂.₅ level during the COVID-19 outbreak in Hubei Province. The results show that changes in anthropogenic emissions have reduced PM₂.₅ concentrations in February and March 2020 by about 33.3% compared to the same period in 2019, while changes in meteorological conditions have increased PM₂.₅ concentrations by about 8.8%. Moreover, the impact of meteorological conditions is more significant in the central region, which is likely to be related to regional transport. After excluding the contribution of meteorological conditions, the PM₂.₅ concentration in Hubei Province in February and March 2020 is lower than the secondary standard of China (35 μ g/m³). Our estimates also indicate that under similar meteorological conditions as in February and March 2019, an emission reduction intensity equivalent to about 48% of the emission reduction intensity during the lockdown may bring the annual average PM₂.₅ concentration to the standard (35 μ g/m³). Our study shows that machine learning is a powerful tool to quantify the influencing factors of PM₂.₅, and the results further emphasize the need for scientific emission reduction as well as joint regional control measures in future.

Dismantling and recycling e-waste has been recognized as a potential emission source of rare earth elements (REEs). However, the presence of REEs in typical regional soils has yet to be studied. Given the potential health implications of such soil contamination, it is vital to study the characteristics, spatial distribution, and pollution level of REEs caused by e-waste dismantling as well as determine the influencing mechanism. This study focused on Guiyu Town as an example site, which is a typical e-waste dismantling base. From the site, 39 topsoil samples of different types were collected according to grid distribution points. Soil profiles were also collected in the dismantling and non-dismantling areas. The REE characteristic parameters showed that the REE distribution was abnormal and was affected by multiple factors. The results of the integrated pollution index showed that approximately 61.5% of soil samples were considered to be lightly polluted. Spatial distribution and correlation analysis showed that hot spots of REE-polluted soil coincided with known, main pollution sources. Moreover, there was a significant negative correlation (p ≤0.05) between the REE concentration and the distance from the pollution source. E-waste disassembly and recycling greatly affect the physical and chemical properties of the surrounding soil as well as downward migration areas. In the disassembly area, REE accumulated more easily in the surface layer (0–20 cm). Geographical detector results showed that distance factor was the main contribution factor for both light rare earth elements (LREE) and heavy rare earth element (HREE) (q = 34.59% and 53.33%, respectively). REE distribution in soil was nonlinear enhanced by different factors. Taken together, these results showed that e-waste disassembling and recycling not only directly affected the spatial distribution of REEs, but that their distribution was also affected by land use type and soil properties.

Globally distributed karstic soils are characterized by the high accumulation of heavy metal(loid)s, such as Cd. Biogeochemistries and transferability of metal(loid)s in such soils are notably different from that in soils of anthropogenic pollution as evidenced by increasing studies about rice and maize. To solve the question about metal(loid) background and transferability in the system of karstic soils and crops with underground fruits, we designedly collected 246 paired soil–peanut seed samples in a world-famous karstic region in Southwestern China covering an area of 98,700 km². The concentrations of eight regulatory metal(loid)s (Cd, As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soil samples exceeded current standards to different degrees, demonstrating a typical high background. However, the transferability of metal(loid)s from soils to peanut seeds is quite low, resulting in a low exceedance rate of metal(loid)s (Cd, 12.2% and Pb, 1.2%) in seeds (“seed metal(loid)s”), in accordance with the results that metal(loid)s in soils mostly distributed in the inert/residual fractions. Based on the distinct response characteristics of peanut seed metal(loid)s to soil status from rice/maize grain metals, a model was further developed for effectively predicting the concentration of Cd in peanut seeds. Collectively, this study provides a basis for the assessment of soil environmental quality and safety zoning of upland field in karst areas.

In acidic medium, hazardous heavy metals of lead-zinc tailing (LZT) are easily leachable and mobilizable. Thus, the hazard, amount, form, and complexity of the leached heavy metals under acidic precipitation become a major environmental concern. This work investigates the gangue minerals, toxicity, speciation, leaching characteristics of heavy metals in LZT under simulated acid rain, as well as immobilization effects and mechanisms using a sustainable binder. In LZT, dolomite, quartz, calcite, and muscovite are the main gangue minerals, tiny hazardous metallic minerals were absorbed in the surface. The results revealed that Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd were the predominant harmful elements, particularly Pb and Zn. Zn is leached completely and is the concerned hazardous element under simulated acid rain. In the acid rain neutralization ability test, the amount of leachable Pb, Cr, Ca, and Si maintained in equilibrium, leached Zn, Cd, Al, and Mg depended on the addition of acid. Pb and Ca were sedimented in residues. Immobilization of Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd depended on the stability of Ca(OH)₂/C–S–H of hydrates, and 70% LZTHP after curing 7 days can be used for some practical engineering projects. This work opens up deeply understandings for the leached heavy metals under acidic precipitation and improves the sustainable and safe in the field of immobilization of heavy metals.

The characterisation of nanoplastics is much more difficult than that of microplastics. Herewith we employ Raman imaging to capture and visualise nanoplastics and microplastics, due to the increased signal-noise ratio from Raman spectrum matrix when compared with that from a single spectrum. The images mapping multiple characteristic peaks can be merged into one using logic-based algorithm, in order to cross-check these images and to further increase the signal-noise ratio. We demonstrate how to capture and identify microplastics, and then zoom down gradually to visualise nanoplastics, in order to avoid the shielding effect of the microplastics to shadow and obscure the nanoplastics. We also carefully compare the advantages and disadvantages of Raman imaging, while giving recommendations for improvement. We validate our approach to capture the microplastics and nanoplastics as particles released when we cut and assemble PVC pipes in our garden. We estimate that, during a cutting process of the PVC pipe, thousands of microplastics in the range of 0.1–5 mm can be released, along with millions of small microplastics in the range of 1–100 μm, and billions of nanoplastics in the range of <1 μm. Overall, Raman imaging can effectively capture microplastics and nanoplastics.

2022

Plant-derived saponins are bioactive surfactant compounds that can solubilize organic pollutants in environmental matrices, thereby facilitating pollutant remediation. Externally applied saponin has potential to enhance total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) biodegradation in the root zone (rhizosphere) of wild plants, but the associated mechanisms are not well understood. For the first time, this study evaluated a triterpenoid saponin (from red ash leaves, Alphitonia excelsa) in comparison to a synthetic surfactant (Triton X-100) for their effects on plant growth and biodegradation of TPH in the rhizosphere of two native wild species (a grass, Chloris truncata, and a shrub, Hakea prostrata). The addition of Triton X-100 at the highest level (1000 mg/kg) in the polluted soil significantly hindered the plant growth (reduced plant biomass and photosynthesis) and associated rhizosphere microbial activity in both the studied plants. Therefore, TPH removal in the rhizosphere of both plant species treated with the synthetic surfactant was not enhanced (at the lower level, 500 mg/kg soil) and even slightly decreased (at the highest level) compared to that in the surfactant-free (control) treatment. By contrast, TPH removal was significantly increased with saponin application (up to 60% in C. truncata at 1000 mg/kg due to enhanced plant growth and associated rhizosphere microbial activity). No significant difference was observed between the two saponin application levels. Dehydrogenase activity positively correlated with TPH removal (p < 0.001) and thus this parameter could be used as an indicator to predict the rhizoremediation efficiency. This work indicates that saponin-amended rhizoremediation could be an environmentally friendly and effective biological approach to remediate TPH-polluted soils. It was clear that the enhanced plant growth and rhizosphere microbial activity played a crucial role in TPH rhizoremediation efficiency. The saponin-induced molecular processes that promoted plant growth and soil microbial activity in the rhizosphere warrant further studies.
