A hybrid air pollutant concentration prediction model combining secondary decomposition and sequence reconstruction
2020
Sun, Wei | Huang, Chenchen
Acid rain is a serious threat to terrestrial ecosystems. To provide more accurate early warning information for acid rain prevention, urban planning, and travel planning, a novel air pollutant prediction model was proposed in this paper to predict NO₂ and SO₂. First, the data were decomposed into several sub-sequences by a complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise. Second, the subsequences are reconstructed by variational mode decomposition and sample entropy. Then, the new subsequences are predicted by the extreme learning machine combined with the whale optimization algorithm. The empirical analysis was carried out through 8 data sets. According to the experimental results, three main conclusions can be drawn. First, the proposed model in this paper has excellent prediction performance and robustness. In all the comparison experiments, the R² and RMSE of the proposed model are the best among all the models. Second, data preprocessing is very necessary. After adding the decomposition algorithm, the average improvement levels of R² and RMSE were 897.57% and 50.78%, respectively. Third, the re-decomposition of IMF1 is an effective method to improve prediction accuracy. After the re-decomposition of IMF1, R² can be improved by 13.64% on average on the original basis, and RMSE can be reduced by 31.99% on average. The results of this study can provide a valuable reference for the research of air pollutant prediction. In future work, the application of the proposed model in other air pollutants or other regions can be explored.

The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is exposed to a diversity of contaminants, such as hydrocarbons and heavy metal(oid)s, either from natural sources or as a result of uncontrolled coastal urbanisation and industrialisation. To determine the effect of these contaminants on the marine biota along the Mexican GoM, the biological responses of the shoal flounder Syacium gunteri, naturally exposed, were studied. The study area included all the Mexican GoM, which was divided into three areas: West-southwest (WSW), South-southwest (SSW) and South-southeast (SSE). The biological responses included the global DNA methylation levels, the expression of biomarker genes related to contaminants (cytochrome P450 1A, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and vitellogenin), histopathological lesions and PAH metabolites in bile (hydroxynaphthalene, hydroxyphenanthrene, hydroxypyrene and Benzo[a]pyrene). The correlation between the biological responses and the concentration of contaminants (hydrocarbons and metal(oid)s), present in both sediments and organisms, were studied. The shoal flounders in WSW and SSW areas presented higher DNA hypomethylation, less antioxidative response and biotransformation gene expression and a higher concentration of PAH metabolites in bile than SSE area; those responses were associated with total hydrocarbons and metals such as chromium (Cr). SSE biological responses were mainly associated with the presence of metals, such as cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), in the tissue of shoal flounders. The results obtained on the physiological response of the shoal flounder can be used as part of a permanent active environmental surveillance program to watch the ecosystem health of the Mexican GoM.

Cell wall acts as a major metal sink in plant roots, while a few studies focused on root cell wall binding in plants for the phytostabilization of multi-metal contaminated soils. A pot experiment was performed to characterize root cell wall properties of the mining ecotype (ME) and non-mining ecotype (NME) of Athyrium wardii (Hook.) in response to Cd and Pb. The cell wall was found to be the major sink for Cd (41.3–54.3%) and Pb (71.4–73.8%) accumulation in roots of the ME when exposed to Cd and/or Pb. The ME showed more Cd and Pb accumulation in root cell walls when exposed to Cd and Pb simultaneously, compared with those exposed to single Cd or Pb as well as the NME, suggesting some modifications for cell walls. The uronic acid contents of pectin and hemicellulose 1 (HC1) in root cell walls of the ME increased significantly when exposed to Cd and Pb simultaneously, suggesting enhanced cell wall binding capacity, thus resulting in more Cd and Pb bound to pectin and HC1. In particular, pectin was found to be the predominant binding site for Cd and Pb. Greater pectin methylesterase activity along with a lower degree of methylesterification were observed in the cell walls of the ME when exposed to Cd and Pb simultaneously. Furthermore, the ME present more O–H, N–H, C–OH, C–O–C, C–C and/or Ar–H in root cell walls when exposed to Cd and Pb simultaneously. These changes of root cell wall properties of the ME lead to enhanced cell wall binding ability in response to the co-contamination of Cd and Pb, thus could be considered a key process for enhanced Cd and Pb accumulation in roots of the ME when exposed to Cd and Pb simultaneously.

Understanding the relationship between road-deposited sediments (RDS) and total suspended solids (TSS) is essential for managing non-point pollution. Studying the heavy metal concentrations of RDS and TSS in rainfall is important to the development of RDS management strategies and to the design of effective stormwater management practices. We investigated the heavy metal (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sn, Pb) in RDS and TSS in rainfall runoff to assess the metal pollution level and to evaluate the contribution of RDS heavy metal pollution in the TSS. The heavy metal pollution in RDS and TSS in industrial areas was relatively higher in small particles (<125 μm), while TSS had a higher heavy metal concentration than RDS. In addition, the concentration of heavy metals in TSS increased rapidly during the initial rainfall. The amount of particles larger than 125 μm also increased, suggesting that large metal particles accumulated in industrial areas were also discharged in the form of non-point pollution. The amount of RDS per unit of industrial area (g/m²) and the accumulation of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) (mg/m²) were 15- and 8–54-fold higher than those of urban areas, respectively. Considering particles <125 μm, which can be easily transported or discharged during rainfall, the contribution rate of RDS to TSS was 41.3%, but the average contribution rate to heavy metals in TSS was 22.1%. The average load of heavy metals from industrial areas in TSS was 77.9%. The load of Cu, Ni, As, Cd, and Sn exceeded 90%, indicating that most of these metals were attributed to industrial activities related to metal processing. Our results suggest the importance of efficient road cleaning and rainfall runoff management strategies to solve the heavy metal pollution problem caused by non-point sources in industrial areas.

Daniel, Damaris Benny | Ashraf, P Muhamed | Thomas, Saly N.
Microplastics in commercially important seafood species is an emerging area of food safety concern. While there have been reports of plastic particles in the gastrointestinal tract of several species, presence of microplastics in edible fish tissues has not yet been reported from India. This study examined the presence of microplastics in the edible (muscle and skin) and inedible (gill and viscera) tissues of nine commercially important pelagic fish species from Kerala, India. A total of 163 particles consisting mainly of fragments (58%) were isolated. Out of 270 fishes analysed (n = 30 per species), 41.1% of the fishes had microplastics in their inedible tissues while only 7% of fishes had microplastics in their edible tissues. The quantity of microplastics in inedible tissue was significantly larger in filter feeders than, that in visual predators (p < 0.05). The average abundance of microplastics in edible tissues was 0.07 ± 0.26 items/fish (i.e., 0.005 ± 0.02 items/g) and was 0.53 ± 0.77 items/fish (i.e., 0.054 ± 0.098 items/g) in inedible tissues. The results suggest the possibility of human intake of microplastics by the consumption of pelagic fishes from this region, albeit in small quantities.

The microbial characteristics and bacterial communities of sediment sludge upon different concentrations of exposure to uranium were investigated by high solution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-throughput sequencing. After exposure to initial uranium concentrations of 10–50 μM for 24 h in synthetic wastewater, the removal efficiencies of uranium reached 80.7%–96.5%. The spherical and short rod bacteria were dominant in the sludge exposed to uranium. HRTEM-EDS and XPS analyses indicated that reduction and adsorption were the main mechanisms for uranium removal. Short-term exposure to low concentrations of uranium resulted in a decrease in bacterial richness but an increase in diversity. A dramatic change in the composition and abundances of the bacterial community were present in the sediment sludge exposed to uranium. The highest removal efficiency was identified in the sediment sludge exposed to 30 μM uranium, and the dominant bacteria included Acinetobacter (44.9%), Klebsiella (20.0%), Proteiniclasticum (6.7%), Enterobacteriaceae (6.6%), Desulfovibrio (4.4%), Porphyromonadaceae (4.1%), Comamonas (2.4%) and Sedimentibacter (2.3%). By comparison to the inoculum sediment sludge, exposure to uranium caused a substantial difference in the majority of bacterial abundance.

The use of the phenicol antibiotic florfenicol in livestock can select for the optrA gene, which also confers resistance to the critically important oxazolidinone antibiotic linezolid. However, the occurrence and dissemination of florfenicol and linezolid cross-resistance genes in anaerobic treatment systems for livestock waste are unknown. Herein, the phenotypes and genotypes (optrA, fexA, fexB, and cfr) of florfenicol and linezolid cross-resistance were investigated in 339 enterococci strains isolated from lab- and full-scale mesophilic anaerobic digestion systems treating swine waste. It was found that optrA, fexA, and fexB were frequently detected in isolated enterococci in both systems by PCR screening, whereas cfr was not detected. The most abundant gene was optrA, which was detected in 73.5% (n = 50) and 38.9% (n = 23) of enterococci isolates in the full-scale influent and effluent, respectively. Most strains carried more than two resistance genes, and the average percentage of co-occurrence of optrA/fexA was 16.6%. Based on minimum inhibitory concentrations of the enterococci strain phenotypes, 85.7%, 77.5%, and 77.5% of strains in influent were resistant to chloramphenicol, florfenicol, and linezolid, respectively, while 56.3%, 65.2%, and 13% in the effluent isolates were found, respectively, which was consistent with the genotype results. The phenotypes and genotypes of florfenicol and linezolid resistance were relative stable in the enterococci isolated from the influent and effluent in lab-scale anaerobic digestion system. The findings signify the enterococci isolates harboring the optrA gene remained in effluents of both full- and lab-scale swine waste anaerobic digestion system; hence, effective management strategies should be implemented to prevent the discharge of antibiotic resistance from the livestock waste treatment systems.

2020
Weideman, Eleanor A. | Munro, Christie | Perold, Vonica | Omardien, Aaniyah | Ryan, Peter G.
Ingestion of anthropogenic litter has been well documented in marine vertebrates, but comparatively little is known about marine invertebrates. We report macrolitter ingestion by the sandy anemone Bunodactis reynaudi at Muizenberg beach in False Bay, South Africa. Monthly surveys from May 2015 to August 2019 collected 491 ingested litter items (9.4 ± 14.9 items·month⁻¹, 39.8 ± 71.5 g·month⁻¹), of which >99% were plastic. The number of ingested items was correlated with the abundance of stranded items and ingestion peaked in autumn when seasonal rains washed more litter into the bay. Most ingested litter was clear (39%), white (16%) and black/purple (15%). Comparison with environmental litter showed selection for flexible plastics, particularly bags/packets and food packaging. Experimental feeding trials found that B. reynaudi selected for pieces of HDPE bag suspended in seawater for 2–20 days, suggesting that biofilms enhance the palatability of flexible plastics. Studies are needed to assess the possible impacts of plastic ingestion on B. reynaudi. While only a small proportion of the population currently ingest litter, ingestion might become more common if environmental litter loads increase. This might negatively affect the anemone’s ability to respond to other environmental changes such as increasing levels of heavy metal pollution.

2020
Čelić, Mira | Škrbić, Biljana D. | Insa, Sara | Živančev, Jelena | Gros, Meritxell | Petrović, M. (Mira)
The present study is the first comprehensive monitoring of 13 selected endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in untreated urban and industrial wastewater in Serbia to assess their impact on the Danube River basin and associated freshwaters used as sources for drinking water production in the area. Results showed that natural and synthetic estrogens were present in surface and wastewater at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 64.8 ng L⁻¹. Nevertheless, they were not detected in drinking water. For alkylphenols concentrations ranged from 1.1 to 78.3 ng L⁻¹ in wastewater and from 0.1 to 37.2 ng L⁻¹ in surface water, while in drinking water concentrations varied from 0.4 to 7.9 ng L⁻¹. Bisphenol A (BPA) was the most abundant compound in all water types, with frequencies of detection ranging from 57% in drinking water, to 70% in surface and 84% in wastewater. Potential environmental risks were characterized by calculating the risk quotients (RQs) and the estrogenic activity of EDCs in waste, surface and drinking water samples, as an indicator of their potential detrimental effects. RQ values of estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) were the highest, exceeding the threshold value of 1 in 60% of wastewater samples, while in surface water E1 displayed potential risks in only two samples. Total estrogenic activity (EEQₜ) surpassed the threshold of 1 ng E2 L⁻¹ in about 67% of wastewater samples, and in 3 surface water samples. In drinking water, EEQₜ was below 1 ng L⁻¹ in all samples.

2020
Wu, Xiang | Wu, Hao | Gu, Xiaoxiao | Zhang, Rongfei | Sheng, Qiang | Ye, Jinyun
In freshwater ecosystems with frequent cyanobacterial blooms, the cyanobacteria toxin pollution is becoming increasingly serious. Nodularin (NOD), which has strong biological toxicity, has emerged as a new pollutant and affects the normal growth, development and reproduction of aquatic organisms. However, little information is available regarding this toxin. In this study, a graphene oxide material modified by L-cysteine was synthesized and used to immobilize microcystin-LR (MC-LR)-degrading enzyme (MlrA) to form an immobilized enzyme nanocomposite, CysGO-MlrA. Free-MlrA was used as a control. The efficiency of NOD removal by CysGO-MlrA was investigated. Additionally, the effects of CysGO-MlrA and the NOD degradation product on zebrafish lymphocytes were detected to determine the biological toxicity of these two substances. The results showed the following: (1) There was no significant difference in the degradation efficiency of NOD between CysGO-MlrA and free-MlrA; the degradation rate of both was greater than 80% at 1 h (2) The degradation efficiency of the enzyme could retain greater than 81% of the initial degradation efficiency after the CysGO-MlrA had been reused 7 times. (3) CysGO-MlrA retained greater than 50% of its activity on the 8th day when preserved at 0 °C, while free-MlrA lost 50% of its activity on the 4th day. (4) CysGO-MlrA and the degradation product of NOD showed no obvious cytotoxicity to zebrafish lymphocytes. Therefore, CysGO-MlrA might be used as an efficient and ecologically safe degradation material for NOD.
