To explore the influence of rapid urbanization development on the accumulation of 16 priority PAHs in urban environment, thirty-three surface sediments from city lakes in different urbanized areas of Shanghai were collected to evaluate the occurrence characteristic and source apportionment of PAHs. The concentrations of Σ₁₆PAHs in lake surface sediments ranged from 55.7 to 4928 ng g⁻¹ with a mean value of 1131 ng g⁻¹ (standard deviation, 1228 ng g⁻¹), of which 4-, 5- and 6-ring PAHs were the dominant components. Spatial distribution of PAHs in lake surface sediments showed a significantly declining trend along with a decreasing urbanization gradient (one-way ANOVA, p < .05). Two hotspots of sediment PAHs were mainly distributed at highly urbanized areas with intensive population density and heavy traffic activities and at burgeoning industrial towns in the suburb. Source apportionment of total PAHs identified by a constrained positive matrix factorization model revealed that vehicle emission and combustion of coal, biomass and natural gas were the absolutely predominant sources, respectively accounting for 55.0% and 40.45% of total PAHs burden in lake sediments. Land use regression (LUR) models were successfully developed to evaluate spatial variation of PAHs contamination in urban sediments based on their significant correlations with residential land, commercial land, traffic variables, industrial sources, and population density. All PAH compounds showed strong associations with one or two source indicators (the traffic congestion index and the number of industrial sources), with the fitting R² varying from 0.529 to 0.984. Our findings suggest that energy consumption related to land use activities obviously promoted PAH accumulations in urban sediment environment during rapid development of urbanization and industrialization in Shanghai.

Due to their longevity and extensive migration areas, marine turtles are able to accumulate diverse contaminants over many years and as a consequence they represent an interesting bioindicator species for marine ecosystem pollution. Metals provoke toxicological effects in many aquatic animal species, but marine turtles have been under-investigated in this area. Thus, we have determined the presence of certain inorganic elements (As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn) in olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) and related them to metallothionein (MT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GR) transcription and/or enzymatic activities. Gene expression of sod, cat and gr was found to be higher in blood than liver or kidney but most of the significant relationships were found in liver, not only for gene expression but also for enzyme activities. This must be related to the role the liver has as the first filter organ. Several positive relationships of sod, cat and gr gene expression in the different tissues were found in this population, as well as very high Cd concentrations. This could mean that these turtles are adapting to the metals-production of ROS and damage through a high transcription of these antioxidants. Multiple positive relationships with GR seem to be part of its compensatory effect due to the decrease of SOD production against the high and chronic exposure to certain xenobiotics. CAT, on the other hand, seems not to be used much, and glutathione detoxification of H₂O₂ may be more important in this species. Finally, despite the very high Cd concentrations found in this population, no significant relationship was found in any tissue with metallothionein gene expression. These results, along with very high Cd concentrations and a negative relationship with Cu, lead us to consider some kind of disruption in mt gene expression in these turtles.

2018

In the last decades, research regarding the dynamics of pesticides has grown, even in remote regions. Due to long-range atmospheric transport, environmental persistence and toxicological potential of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), similar characteristics of current-use pesticides (CUPs) and their massive use in Brazil, these contaminants have become a major concern for environmental and human life. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate subgroups or individual chemicals of OCPs and CUPs, which could have travelled over two Conservation Unit sites in the Rio de Janeiro state. The study was carried out for 24 months, (2013–2015), in Itatiaia National Park (INP) and in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park (SONP), at ∼2400 and ∼2200 meters above sea level, respectively. The study was based on atmospheric passive sampling (polyurethane foam disks). Target pesticides were detected by means of gas chromatography device coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Significantly higher concentrations were measured in SONP when compared to INP. However, in broad terms, the contamination profile was quite similar for both national parks: The highest concentrations of endosulfan (INP - 1275 pg m⁻³ and SONP - 3202 pg m⁻³) were followed by cypermethrin (INP - 148 pg m⁻³ and SONP - 881 pg m⁻³) and chlorpyrifos (INP - 67 pg m⁻³ and SONP - 270 pg m⁻³). In agreement with previous studies, the atmospheric concentrations of legacy OCPs showed background air levels. The decrease of endosulfan over the years was highlighted with a parallel increase of chlorpyrifos, suggesting a collateral effect of the national bias of permissive and massive use of agrochemicals. CUPs seemed to behave like pseudo-persistent pollutants (pseudo-POPs). This is the first report of atmospheric concentrations of pyrethroids in Brazilian mountain regions, and possibly the first to investigate them in the air in South America or in any mountain region in the world.

There are substantial concerns that increasing levels of anthropogenic noise in the oceans may impact aquatic animals. Noise can affect animals physically, physiologically and behaviourally, but one of the most obvious effects is interference with acoustic communication. Acoustic communication often plays a crucial role in reproductive interactions and over 800 species of fish have been found to communicate acoustically. There is very little data on whether noise affects reproduction in aquatic animals, and none in relation to acoustic communication. In this study we tested the effect of continuous noise on courtship behaviour in two closely-related marine fishes: the two-spotted goby (Gobiusculus flavescens) and the painted goby (Pomatoschistus pictus) in aquarium experiments. Both species use visual and acoustic signals during courtship. In the two-spotted goby we used a repeated-measures design testing the same individuals in the noise and the control treatment, in alternating order. For the painted goby we allowed females to spawn, precluding a repeated-measures design, but permitting a test of the effect of noise on female spawning decisions. Males of both species reduced acoustic courtship, but only painted gobies also showed less visual courtship in the noise treatment compared to the control. Female painted gobies were less likely to spawn in the noise treatment. Thus, our results provide experimental evidence for negative effects of noise on acoustic communication and spawning success. Spawning is a crucial component of reproduction. Therefore, even though laboratory results should not be extrapolated directly to field populations, our results suggest that reproductive success may be sensitive to noise pollution, potentially reducing fitness.

2018

Over the past decade, microscopic plastic debris, known as microplastics, emerged as a contaminant of concern in marine and freshwater ecosystems. Although regularly detected in aquatic environments, the toxicity of those synthetic particles is not well understood. To address this, we investigated whether the exposure to microplastics adversely affects the amphipod Gammarus pulex, a key freshwater invertebrate.Juvenile (6–9 mm) and adult (12–17 mm) individuals were exposed to irregular, fluorescent polyethylene terephthalate fragments (PET, 10–150 μm; 0.8–4,000 particles mL⁻¹) for 24 h. Results show that body burden after 24 h depends on the dose and age of G. pulex with juveniles ingesting more microplastics than adults. After chronic exposure over 48 d, microplastics did not significantly affect survival, development (molting), metabolism (glycogen, lipid storage) and feeding activity of G. pulex. This demonstrates that even high concentrations of PET particles did not negatively interfere with the analyzed endpoints. These results contradict previous research on marine crustaceans. Differences may result from variations in the exposure regimes (e.g., duration, particle concentrations), plastic characteristics (e.g., type, size, shape, additives) as well as the species-specific morphological, physiological and behavioral traits. As a detritivorous shredder G. pulex is adapted to feed on non-digestible materials and might, therefore, be less sensitive towards exposure to synthetic particles. Accordingly, we argue that the autecology needs to be taken into account and that research should focus on identifying traits that render species susceptible to microplastic exposure.

The research was conducted to investigate the accumulation, distribution and availability of Cd in paddy soil and their relation to Cd in rice plants under 30-year fertilization regimes. Six treatments were involved in the study: control without fertilization (CK), chemical fertilizer (NPK), high nitrogen chemical fertilizer (HN), rice straw incorporation (ST), low and high dosage of manure fertilizer (LM and HM). Total and DTPA extractable concentration of Cd (T-Cd and DTPA-Cd) in bulk soils (20 cm topsoil), profiles (0–60 cm) and aggregates (>2, 1–2, 0.5–1, 0.25–0.5, 0.053–0.25 and < 0.053 mm) were investigated. The Cd concentration in relevant rice plant (roots, stems, leaves, husks and grains) were also analyzed. Manure fertilizers caused T-Cd accumulation in bulk soil with a significant increase of 36.2% in LM and 81.2% in HM. Similar impacts of manure fertilizers were observed in DTPA-Cd in the bulk soil. Further, the HM generated a further accumulation in deeper soil layers, presenting a remarkable increase of T-Cd (28.3%–225%) in 10–40 cm and DTPA-Cd (116%–158%) in 10–30 cm profiles. Moreover, the continuous application of manure fertilizers enhanced the availability of Cd in all aggregate size classes with an increase of 17.3%–87.8% in DTPA-Cd. Organic fertilizers (LM, HM and ST) heightened the content of Cd (38.0%–152%) in all parts of rice plant. The accumulation of Cd in rice plants was directly affected by fertilization regimes and Cd availability in the 10–20 cm soil layers and 0.25–0.5 mm aggregates. In conclusion, long-term application of manures resulted in increasing availability of Cd in aggregates and in topsoil and subsoil layers, which accordingly enhanced the accumulation of Cd in rice plants.

2018

Paddy soil plays an essential role in contributing to the emission of methane (CH₄), a potent greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere. This study aimed to demonstrate the effects of straw incorporation and straw-derived biochar amendment on CH₄ emissions from double-rice cropping fields and to explore their potential mechanisms based on in-situ field measurements conducted for a period of three years (2012–2014) and model analysis. The results showed that the improved soil aeration due to biochar amendment resulted in low CH₄ emissions and that sufficient substrate carbon availability in straw amendment treatments caused high CH₄ emissions. The newly developed CH₄ emission module for the water and nitrogen management model (WNMM), a process-based biophysical model, performed well when simulating both daily CH₄ fluxes and the annual cumulative CH₄ emissions under straw incorporation and biochar amendment. Results of our study indicate that the model has a great potential for upscaling and could benefit mechanism analyses about the factors regulating CH₄ emissions. Application of biochar into paddy fields provides a great opportunity to reduce CH₄ emissions, and the decrease in CH₄ emissions following biochar amendment with repeated crop cycles would sustain for a prolonged period.

2018
Li, Kelun | Chen, Jie | Zhu, Lizhong
Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), as a major component of brominated flame retardants, has been detected in the agricultural soil in considerable amount. Given that BDE-209 is toxic, ubiquitous and persistent, BDE-209 might induce toxic effects on rice cultivars planted in contaminated soil. A comparative study was conducted on phytotoxicities and GC-MS based antioxidant-related metabolite levels to investigate the differences of phytotoxicities of BDE-209 to rice cultivars in Yangtze River Delta of China. Rice seedlings were treated with BDE-209 at 0, 10, 50, 100 and 500 μg/L in a hydroponic setup. Results showed that BDE-209-induced phytotoxicites were cultivar-dependent and that the antioxidant defense systems in the cultivars were disturbed differently. Among the three selected cultivars (Jiayou 5, Lianjing 7 and Yongyou 9), Jiayou 5 and Lianjing 7 displayed lower toxic effects than Yongyou 9 in terms of the growth inhibition, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. The increases of antioxidant enzymes were significantly higher in Jiayou 5 and Lianjing 7 than those in Yongyou 9. Multivariate analysis of antioxidant-related metabolites in the three cultivars indicated that l-tryptophan and l-valine were the most important ones among 10 metabolites responsible for the separation of cultivars. The up-regulation of l-tryptophan and l-valine were likely plant strategies to increase their tolerance. The current results provided an insight into the development of rice cultivars with higher BDE-209 tolerance.

The coagulation behaviors of humic acid (HA) with Cs+ (10–500 mM), Sr2+ (0.8–10.0 mM) and Eu3+ (0.01–1.0 mM) at different pH values (2.8, 7.1 and 10.0) were acquired through a dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique combined with spectroscopic analysis and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. The coagulation rate and the average hydrodynamic diameter (<Dh>) increased significantly as the concentration of nuclides increased. <Dh> could be scaled to time t as <Dh>∝ ta at higher Sr2+ concentrations, which shows that HA coagulation is consistent with the diffusion-limited colloid aggregation (DLCA) model. Trivalent Eu3+ induced HA coagulation at a much lower concentration than bivalent Sr2+ and monovalent Cs+. The coagulation value ratio of Sr2+ and Eu3+ to Cs+ is almost proportional to Z−6, indicating that the HA coagulation process is generally consistent with the Schulze-Hardy rule. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the complexation between nuclides and carboxylic/phenolic groups of HA molecules played important roles in the coagulation of HA. MD modelling suggested that Sr2+ and Eu3+ ions increased the coagulation process through the formation of intra- or inter-molecular bridges between negatively charged HA molecules, whereas for Cs+, no inter-molecular bridges were formed. This work offers new insight into the interactions between HA and radionuclides and provides a prediction for the roles of HA in the transportation and elimination of radionuclides in severely polluted environments.

Marine litter is commonly observed everywhere in the ocean. In this study, we analyzed 17 km of video footage, collected by a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) at depths ranging between 20 and 220 m, during 19 transects performed on the rocky banks of the Straits of Sicily. Recently, the Contracting Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) recognized this site as an Ecologically or Biologically Significant Area (EBSA). The research aim was to quantify the abundance of marine litter and its impact on benthic fauna. Litter density ranged from 0 items/100 m2 to 14.02 items/100 m2 with a mean (±standard error) of 2.13 (±0.84) items/100 m2. The observed average density was higher (5.2 items/100 m2) at depths >100 m than at shallower depths (<100 m, 0.71 items/100 m2). Lost or abandoned fishing lines contributed to 98.07% of the overall litter density, then representing the dominant source of marine debris. Litter interactions with fauna were frequently observed, with 30% of litter causing “entanglement/coverage” and 15% causing damage to sessile fauna. A total of 16 species showed interaction (entanglement/coverage or damage) with litter items and 12 of these are species of conservation concern according to international directives and agreements (CITES, Berne Convention, Habitat Directive, SPA/BD Protocol, IUCN Red List); we also observed 7 priority habitats of the SPA/BD Protocol. This research will support the implementation of monitoring “Harm” as recommended by the UN Environment/MAP Regional Plan on Marine Litter Management in the Mediterranean, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The institution of a SPAMI in the investigated area could represent a good management action for the protection of this hotspot of biodiversity and to achieve a Good Environmental Status (GES) for the marine environment by 2020, under the MSFD.
