Secondary inorganic aerosols, including sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium contribute to a large extent to the severe haze pollution events in China. Understanding their formation mechanisms is critical for designing effective mitigation strategies to control haze pollution, especially as the role of nitrate seemed to become more important recently, especially in some megacities. In the present study, simultaneous observations were conducted in two megacities (Chengdu and Chongqing) in Sichuan Basin of southwest China, one of the regions suffering from severe aerosol pollution. One typical long-lasting pollution event in Chengdu and Chongqing was captured during wintertime from December 25, 2016 to January 5, 2017. The campaign-average of hourly concentrations of PM2.5, sulfate, and nitrate, measured by an Aerosol Analyzer (ZSF) were 101 ± 73.8 μg/m3, 15.9 ± 11.8 μg/m3, and 24.9 ± 20.6 μg/m3, respectively, in Chengdu, and were 87.7 ± 53.8 μg/m3, 19.7 ± 13.5 μg/m3, and 15.1 ± 10.1 μg/m3, respectively, in Chongqing. Nitrate contributed substantially to PM2.5 pollution when PM2.5 was lower than 150 μg/m3, largely due to the strong secondary transformation of NOX to nitrate during the occurrence of the pollution episode. Heterogeneous hydrolysis of N2O5 dominated nitrate formation during nighttime, while photochemical reactions and high-RH enhanced gas- to aqueous-phase dissolution of NH3 and HNO3 or cloud processes likely played important roles for nitrate formation during daytime. RH-dependent heterogeneous reactions contributed greatly to the formation of sulfate. NOX is confirmed to play an important role as an oxidant in accelerating the secondary transformation of SO2 to sulfate at high RH and low O3 levels under neutralization condition during heavy PM2.5 pollution episode. Results from this study identified the formation mechanism of nitrate, especially during the daytime, and addressed the importance of heterogeneous inorganic reactions in the formation of heavy aerosol pollution events.

Due to increased use of agrochemicals and growing concerns about ecotoxicology, the development of new insecticides, moving away from those with neurotoxic and broad spectrum effects towards insecticides that are safer for the environment and nontarget beneficial species, has been a research priority. Novaluron stands out among these newer insecticides, is an insect growth regulator that is used for the control of insect pests in crops grown close to mulberry plantations. Mulberry serves as food for the silkworm Bombyx mori, which is a nontarget insect of great economic importance to silk production. We investigated the lethal and sublethal effects of Novaluron on the development of B. mori. Larvae were segregated into experimental groups: the control groups (CGs) and the treatment groups (TGs), which were treated with the Novaluron concentration of 0.15 mL/L. Following exposure, we analyzed: larval mortality, changes in the insect life cicle and cytotoxic effects on the midgut cells. This is the first report about the Novaluron’s effects on B.mori. We detected rupture in the integument, complete cessation of feeding, late development, incomplete ecdysis and production of defective cocoons. After 240 h of exposure, there was 100% mortality in TG larvae exposed in the 3rd instar and 20% mortality from larvae exposed in the 5th instar. Cytotoxic effects was observed, such as dilation of cells, emission of cytoplasmic protrusions, extreme rarefaction of the cytoplasm and nuclei, dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum in addition to changes in mitochondria, the presence of large digestive vacuoles and intercellular spaces and the presence of active caspase. Novaluron exposure impairs the midgut and may affect the physiological functions of this organ. Novaluron additionally compromises several phases of insect development, indicating the importance of toxicology studies that utilize different life stages of nontarget species to evaluate the safe use of insecticides.

There is a growing interest in the occurrence and sources of pharmaceutical substances in the environment. This paper reports the first detailed transect of pharmaceutical occurrence along the River Thames, UK, from source to sea, undertaken during a period of high flow in 2016. In 37 samples a total of 41 pharmaceuticals and 2 lifestyle compounds (cocaine and sucralose) were detected. Total concentration of pharmaceuticals ranged from 0.0012 μg/l to 10.24 μg/l with a median of 2.6 μg/l. Sucralose concentrations varied from <0.01 to 5.9 μg/l with a median concentration of 1.93 μg/l and was detected in every sample except the groundwater-dominated sources of the Thames. Antimicrobials, including those on the surface water watch list (erythromycin, clarithromycin and azithromycin) were detected in every site downstream of the Thames source. Diclofenac, recently on the surface water watch list, was detected in 97% of Thames samples and above the proposed EQS of 0.1 μg/l in 12 samples. Distinct increases in concentration and number of pharmaceuticals were found downstream of the Oxford, Mogdon and Hogsmill wastewater treatment works (WWTW) but were more subdued downstream of the Crossness and Beckton WWTW due to the tidal nature of the Thames and combined sewer outflows. Sucralose was found to be an excellent tracer of wastewaters (treated and untreated) and can be used as a proxy for many pharmaceuticals. Paracetamol and ibuprofen were tracers of untreated wastewater inputs to the Thames due to their high biodegradation within WWTWs.

Breast milk, especially colostrum, is not just a source of nutrients and immune factors for the newborn, but also accumulates environmental persistent pollutants and its diverse microbes affect the early colonization of the newborn's gut. Little is known about associations between environmental pollutants and the microbial composition of human colostrum. We assessed the influence of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), a persistent organic pollutant (POP), in colostrums on the microbial composition of human colostrum samples. HCH concentrations in 89 colostrum samples collected from a population living on the easternmost island of China were measured via gas chromatography equipped with mass spectrometer (GC-MS), HCH exposure risks for infants via dietary intake of breast milk were assessed, and for 29 colostrum samples the microbiota were profiled using 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing to assess the association with HCH exposure levels. Our study confirmed high colostrum exposure levels of total HCHs (12.19 ± 13.68 μg L⁻¹) in this Chinese population. We predominantly identified Proteobacteria (67.6%) and Firmicutes (25.1%) in colostrum and microbial diversity at the genus level differed between samples with different HCH levels; e.g., Pseudomonas which contains several HCH degrading strains was found in significantly higher abundance in γ-HCH rich samples. Also, microbes that were statistically significantly associated with HCH levels were also highly correlated with each other (false discovery rate (FDR)<0.01) and clustered in network analysis. Microbial diversity is associated with HCH levels in human colostrum and these associations might be attributable to their HCH degrading ability. These finding provide first insights into the role that environmental persistent pollutants may play in the microbial composition of human colostrum and the colonization of the infant gut.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are widely used in various consumer goods. Consequently, humans are constantly exposed to EDCs, which is associated with a variety of endocrine-related diseases. In this study, we demonstrated the effects of bisphenol A (BPA), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) expression under normoxia and hypoxia. First, we confirmed the effects of EDCs on ER activity using OECD Test Guideline 455. Compared to the 100% activity induced by 1 nM 17-β-estradiol (positive control), BPA and BBP exhibited 50% ERα activation at concentrations of 1.31 μM and 4.8 μM, respectively. In contrast, and consistent with previous reports, DEHP did not activate ERα. ERα is activated and degraded by hypoxia in breast cancer cells. BPA, BBP, and DEHP enhanced ERα-mediated transcriptional activity under hypoxia. All three EDCs decreased ERα protein levels under hypoxia in MCF-7 cells. The transcriptional activity of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 was decreased and secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was increased by BPA and BBP under hypoxia in MCF-7 cells, but not by DEHP. All three EDCs decreased the ERα protein expression level in Ishikawa human endometrial adenocarcinoma cells, and DEHP caused a weak decrease in VEGF secretion under hypoxia. These results demonstrate down-regulation of ERα by EDCs may influence the pathological state associated with hypoxia.

The government of China has announced an ambitious plan to expand the mandatory use of ethanol blended gasoline fuels by 2020. Given the dissimilarity in fuel properties between China and other countries with ethanol blending practices, it is necessary to assess the energy and environmental impacts of ethanol blending. In this study, we prepared two types of ethanol blended fuels (E10, with ethanol contents of approximately 10%) with lower contents of aromatics (ELA) and olefins (ELO), respectively, compared with the market China 5 gasoline. Nine in-use gasoline vehicles varying by manufacturer, engine technology, model year, and emission standard level were analyzed using a chassis dynamometer, which followed the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC). Two major positive effects from using E10 fuels could be observed in this study. First, tested turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) vehicles could gain reductions in CO₂ emission, fuel consumption and energy consumption by switching to the higher-octane-number ELO. This finding, along with the engine development trends in the automotive industry (e.g., downsizing and higher compression ratio), may have a synergistic effect to deliver greater energy efficiency in the future. Second, the two ethanol blended fuels could be more effective in reducing the particle mass (PM) and particle number (PN) emissions than the levels of using China 5 gasoline. Notably, the benefit of using ELO was more significant, with average emission reductions of 35% for the PM and of 44% for the PN. However, ELA and ELO possibly increased emissions of gaseous pollutants for certain vehicles in the study, but the intra-vehicle differences between the various fuel groups were not statistically significant (not significant, p > 0.05, t-test). We suggest that more measurements under various environmental conditions and comprehensive air quality simulations should be conducted to better understand the environmental impacts of ethanol blending in China.

In this analysis, the Aqua/MODIS aerosol optical thickness (AOD), Aura/OMI tropospheric NO2 and SO2 column concentration from 2006 to 2015 were used to statistically analyze the spatial distribution characteristics and variation trends of three polluted parameters from three temporal scales of monthly, seasonal and annual average. The results showed that the minimum values of NO2 and SO2 column concentrations both appeared in July and August, and the maximum values appeared in December and January, which was contrary to the variations in AOD. The highly polluted levels were mainly distributed in Shijiazhuang, Xingtai, and Yancheng cities of Hebei Province, and gradually transported to Zhengzhou, Henan Province, north and southwest of Shandong Province, and Tianjin, along the main line of Taiyuan-Linyi, Shanxi Province. AOD and NO2 had significant differences on the seasonal average scale, whereas SO2 had little changes. These pollutants had declined year by year since 2011, in the 10-year period, AOD and SO2 respectively decreased by 17.14% and 10.57%, and only NO2 rose from 8.69 × 1015 molecules/cm2 in 2006 to 9.10 × 1015 molecules/cm2 in 2015 with the increase rate of 4.79%. Integrated with MODIS-released fire products and the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC), high AOD values in summer were usually accompanied by frequent biomass burning, and heavy heating demand of coal burning led to largest NO2 and SO2 levels in winter. Both inter-annual variations of MEIC NOx and OMI-observed NO2 responded to emission reductions of vehicle exhaustions positively, but vehicle population in Henan and Shandong provinces need to be further controlled. The significant decline of SO2 is mainly attributed to the enforcement of de-sulfurization devices in power plants. Our study found that in the treatment of complex atmospheric pollution, in addition to strict control of common sources of emissions from AOD, NO2 and SO2, it is also necessary to consider their individual characteristics.

Telomere length (TL) has been suggested to be a surrogate for cellular ageing, and a record of cumulative inflammation and oxidative stress over life. An emerging body of evidence has associated exposure to air pollution to changes in TL. To date there is no available systematic review of literature on this association. We aimed to systematically review and conduct meta-analysis of published studies on the relationship between air pollution and TL in adults. Electronic databases were systematically searched for available English language studies on the association between air pollution and TL published up to 1 July 2018. Meta-analyses were conducted following MOOSE guidelines. The heterogeneity in the reported associations was assessed using Cochran's Q test and quantified as I² index. Publication bias was assessed using Egger's regression. Our search identified 19 eligible studies including 11 retrospective and eight prospective studies of which, four had excellent quality, ten had good quality and five had fair quality. Meta-analysis result of two studies on long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ showed an inverse association between these exposures and TL (for 5 μg/m³ PM₂.₅–0.03 95% CI; −0.05, −0.01). Meta-analysis of short-term exposure to PM₂.₅ with three studies and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) with two studies revealed a direct association between these exposures and TL (0.03 95% CI; 0.02, 0.04 and 0.10 95% CI; 0.06, 0.15 respectively). No statistically significant relationship between exposure to PM₁₀ and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure and TL were observed. We observed suggestive evidence for associations between air pollution and TL with potentially different direction of associations for short- and long-term exposures.

Indoor air pollution is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes. Air purifiers are widely used to reduce indoor air pollutants. Ionization air purifiers are becoming increasingly popular for their low power consumption and noise, yet its health effects remain unclear. This randomized, double-blind crossover study is conducted to explore the cardiorespiratory effects of ionization air purification among 44 children in Beijing. Real or sham purification was performed in classrooms for 5 weekdays. Size-fractionated particulate matter (PM), black carbon (BC), ozone (O₃), and negative air ions (NAI) were monitored, and cardiorespiratory functions were measured. Mixed-effect models were used to establish associations between exposures and health parameters. Real purification significantly decreased PM and BC, e.g. PM₀.₅, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀ and BC were decreased by 48%, 44%, 34% and 50%, respectively. O₃ levels were unchanged, while NAI was increased from 12 cm⁻³ to 12,997 cm⁻³. Real purification was associated with a 4.4% increase in forced exhaled volume in 1 s (FEV₁) and a 14.7% decrease in fractional exhaled nitrogen oxide (FeNO). However, heart rate variability (HRV) was altered negatively. Interaction effects of NAI and PM were observed only on HRV, and alterations in HRV were greater with high NAI. Ionization air purifier could bring substantial respiratory benefits, however, the potential negative effects on HRV need further investigation.

This study aimed to determine if there is a co-elevation of human blood arsenic and mercury levels in the Midwestern population of the United States (U.S.) and to determine any geographical patterns and variation of arsenic and mercury that may exist in Michigan. 58,800 blood specimens along with associated demographic/geographic data from the contiguous United States were reviewed. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze demographic/geographic variables associated with elevated arsenic concentrations. Furthermore, blood data from patients in Michigan were aggregated to the ZIP code tabulation area (ZCTA) in order to assess geographic variation using spatial regression models. SaTScan software was also used to analyze potential clustering of arsenic and mercury across Michigan ZCTAs. Within the contiguous United States, elevated mercury blood concentrations, older age, female sex, and coastal status were all associated with elevated arsenic blood concentrations (elevated mercury odds ratio (OR) 3.18 (3.04–3.33); female sex OR 1.06 (1.02–1.11); +10 yr age OR 1.12 (1.11–1.14); coastal state OR 1.33 (1.27–1.40). Within the state of Michigan, as with the continuous U.S., elevated mercury blood concentrations and older age were associated with elevated arsenic blood concentrations (elevated mercury OR 2.75 (2.38–3.18); female sex OR 1.06 (0.95–1.19); +10 yr age OR 1.10 (1.06–1.13). Using spatial regression, it was determined that within Michigan, economic inequality (measured via the Gini coefficient) was also associated with elevated concentrations of mercury in the blood. Clinical reference laboratory data, in conjunction with spatial analysis methods, may enhance our understanding of how elemental exposure affects human health and should be considered for studying how environmental contaminants, socioeconomics and geography affect the health of populations.
