Bioaugmentation is an effective approach for removing pyrene from contaminated sites, and its performance is enhanced by a biosurfactant. To reveal the mechanisms of biosurfactant-assisted bioaugmentation, we introduced RNA stable isotope probing (RNA-SIP) in the pyrene-contaminated soils and explored the impacts of rhamnolipid on the pyrene degradation process. After 12-day degradation, residual pyrene was the lowest in the bioaugmentation treatment (7.76 ± 1.57%), followed by biosurfactant-assisted bioaugmentation (9.86 ± 2.58%) and enhanced natural attenuation (23.97 ± 1.05%). Thirteen well-known and two novel pyrene-degrading bacteria were confirmed to participate in the pyrene degradation. Pyrene degradation was accelerated in the biosurfactant-assisted bioaugmentation, manifested by the high diversity of active pyrene degraders. Our findings expand the knowledge on pyrene degrading bacteria and the mechanisms of pyrene degradation in a bioaugmentation process.

Trace metal (loid) contamination in the atmosphere is widely monitored, but there is a gap in understanding its long-term patterns, especially in North China, which is currently a global contamination hotspot mainly caused by heavy industry emissions and coal combustion. Herein, historical trends of atmospheric As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn contamination in North China over the past ∼500 years are comparatively studied with sediment cores from two subalpine lakes (Gonghai and Muhai). Arsenic, Pb, Cd and Hg were main pollutants according to Pb isotopes and enrichment factors. Mercury contamination has increased continuously since the late 1800s and increasing As, Pb and Cd contamination started in the 1950s in Gonghai. In contrast, the contamination in Muhai lagged two decades for As, Cd and Pb and a half-century for Hg behind that in Gonghai, although the trends were similar. This contamination lag was attributed to the low sensitivity of Muhai sediment to early weak atmospheric metal contamination under 2.1-fold higher detrital sedimentation. As, Pb and Cd contamination has intensified since the 1980s, and the metals showed similar sedimentary fluxes in the cores. However, sedimentary fluxes of Hg contamination were 3.4-fold higher in Gonghai than in Muhai due to combination with organic matter. No obvious Cr, Cu and Ni contamination in the cores was mainly because of the low atmospheric deposition from anthropogenic sources relative to detrital input, although some of their atmospheric emissions were higher than those of As, Cd and Hg. Atmospheric As, Pb and Cd contamination was mainly from domestic sources of coal combustion and nonferrous smelting. Mercury contamination was mainly from global and Asian sources in the first half of the 20th century, and domestic emissions gradually dominated Hg contamination after the mid-1900s.

Lake eutrophication remains a serious environmental problem of global significance, and phosphorus (P) plays a key role in lake eutrophication. Internal P loading, as a result of P release from sediments, is gathering more and more recognition as an important source governing the P availability in these ecosystems. Anoxic condition can promote the release of P associated with Fe oxides, which has already been a consensus. However, it is still unknown whether the anoxic conditions induced by eutrophication act to intensify or weaken the regeneration of organic P (Pₒᵣg) in sediments. We selected the Hongfeng Reservoir, a typical sub-deep lake, to study the regeneration behaviours of C and P in the sediments buried before and after eutrophication. The results showed that Pₒᵣg did not significantly increase with the rapid increase in organic C (Cₒᵣg) since eutrophication occurred. Furthermore, the organic C/P ratio was much higher in sediments buried after eutrophication than in those buried before, which indicated that Pₒᵣg regeneration had been significantly enhanced since eutrophication occurred. Based on C/P ratios, our estimation suggested that the Pₒᵣg regeneration and P release from sediment to water approximately enhanced 45.2% ± 8.7% and 34.5% ± 9.8%, respectively. Elevated primary productivity (algae) and the corresponding hypoxic/anoxic condition, both caused by eutrophication, promoted P biogeochemical cycle in the sub-deep reservoir. This study further verifies the significant contribution of regenerated Pₒᵣg to the internal P load, and highlights the importance of controlling P release from sediments in order to restore clear water ecosystems in sub-deep lakes or reservoirs.

Iron particles present in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) could cause discoloration, while organic pollutants in DWDSs, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), could be enriched by iron particles. However, little is known about the enhanced effects of PFOA and iron particles in DWDSs. To fill in these knowledge gaps, herein, iron-PFOA (FEP) particles were generated using residual chlorine as an oxidant in drinking water conditions and then separated into different sizes (ranging from small to large: FEP-S, FEP-M ，and FEP-L). FEP-S harbored the greatest cytotoxicity among the sizes. Interestingly, our data revealed that the PFOA released from FEP particles transformed into PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) upon digestion in the gastrointestinal environment (GI), and FEP-L bored the strongest transformation, showing a toxicity profile that was distinct from that of FEP-S. Furthermore, mechanistic studies revealed that FEP per se should be accountable for the conversion of PFOA to PFOS dependent on the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in GI, and that FEP-L revealed the greatest production of ·OH. Collectively, these results showed how iron particles and PFOA could result in enhanced toxicity effects in drinking water: (i) PFOA could increase the toxicity of iron particles by reducing particle size and inducing higher generation of ·OH; (ii) iron particles could induce the transformation of PFOA into more toxic PFOS through digestion.

Irrational use of antibiotics produces a large number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) act as important sources and sinks of ARGs, and play an important role in their generation, treatment, and dissemination. This study summarizes the types, concentrations, and factors of ARGs in WWTPs, investigates the sources of ARGs in wastewater, compares the removal efficiencies of different treatment processes on ARGs, and analyzes the potential risks of ARGs accumulation in effluent, sludge and their emission into the air. The results show that the main ARGs detected in the influent of WWTPs are the genes resistant to macrolides (ermB, ermF), tetracyclines (tetW, tetA, tetC), sulfonamides (sul1, sul2), and β-lactams (blaOXA, blaTEM). The concentrations of ARGs in the influent of the WWTPs are 2.23 × 10²–3.90 × 10⁹ copies/mL. Wastewater quality and microbial community are the dominant factors that affect the distribution characteristics of ARGs. The accumulation of ARGs in effluent, sludge, and aerosols pose potential risks to the regional ecological environment and human health. Based on these results, research trends with respect to ARGs in WWTPs are also prospected.

Microbial degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is the major channel for their decontamination from different environments. Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradations of PAHs in batch reactors with single or multiple bacterial strains have been intensively studied, but the cooperative mechanism of functional PAH-degrading populations at the community level under field conditions remains to be explored. We determined the composition of PAH-degrading populations in the bacterial community and PAHs in farmland and wasteland soils contaminated by coking plants using high-throughput sequencing and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. The results indicated that the PAH content of farmland was significantly lower than that of wasteland, which was attributed to the lower content of low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs and benzo [k]fluoranthene. The soil physicochemical properties were significantly different between farmland and wasteland. The naphthalene content was related to the soil organic carbon (SOC) and pH, while phenanthrene was related to the nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻-N) and water content (WC). The pH, nitrite (NO₂⁻-N), SOC, NO₃⁻-N and WC were correlated with the content of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs and total PAHs. The relative abundances of the phyla Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, and Firmicutes and the genera Nocardioides, Bacillus, Lysobacter, Mycobacterium, Streptomyces, and Steroidobacter in farmland soil were higher than those in wasteland soil. The soil physicochemical characteristics of farmland increased the diversities of the PAH degrader and total bacterial communities, which were significantly negatively related to the total PAHs and LMW PAHs. Subsequently, the connectivity and complexity of the network in farmland were lower than those in wasteland, while the module containing a module hub capable of degrading PAHs was identified in the network of farmland soil. Structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis showed that the soil characteristics and optimized abundance and diversity of the bacterial community in farmland were beneficial for the dissipation efficiency of PAHs.

Whatever the exposure route, chemical, physical and biological pollutants modify the whole organism response, leading to nerve, cardiac, respiratory, reproductive, and skin system pathologies. Skin acts as a barrier for preventing pollutant modifications. This review aims to present the available scientific models, which help investigate the impact of pollution on the skin. The research question was “Which experimental models illustrate the impact of pollution on the skin in humans?” The review covered a period of 10 years following a PECO statement on in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo and in silico models. Of 582 retrieved articles, 118 articles were eligible. In oral and inhalation routes, dermal exposure had an important impact at both local and systemic levels. Healthy skin models included primary cells, cell lines, co-cultures, reconstructed human epidermis, and skin explants. In silico models estimated skin exposure and permeability. All pollutants affected the skin by altering elasticity, thickness, the structure of epidermal barrier strength, and dermal extracellular integrity. Some specific models concerned wound healing or the skin aging process. Underlying mechanisms were an exacerbated inflammatory skin reaction with the modulation of several cytokines and oxidative stress responses, ending with apoptosis. Pathological skin models revealed the consequences of environmental pollutants on psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and tumour development. Finally, scientific models were used for evaluating the safety and efficacy of potential skin formulations in preventing the skin aging process or skin irritation after repeated contact. The review gives an overview of scientific skin models used to assess the effects of pollutants. Chemical and physical pollutants were mainly represented while biological contaminants were little studied. In future developments, cell hypoxia and microbiota models may be considered as more representative of clinical situations. Models considering humidity and temperature variations may reflect the impact of these changes.

Understanding the key drivers of eutrophication in floodplain lakes has long been a challenge. In this study, the Chlorophyll a (Chla) variations and associated relationships with environmental stressors along the temporal hydrological connectivity gradient were investigated using a 11-year dataset in a large floodplain lake (Poyang Lake). A geostatistical method was firstly used to calculate the hydrological connectivity curves for each sampling campaign that was further classified by K-means technique. Linear mixed effect (LME) models were developed through the inclusion of the site as a random effect to identify the limiting factors of Chla variations. The results identified three clear hydrological connectivity variation patterns with remarkable connecting water area changes in Poyang Lake. Furthermore, hydrological connectivity changes exerted a great influence on environmental variables in Poyang Lake, with a decrease in nutrient concentrations as the hydrological connectivity enhanced. The Chla exhibited contrast variations with nutrient variables along the temporal hydrological connectivity gradient and generally depended on WT, DO, EC and TP, for the entire study period. Nevertheless, the relative roles of nutrient and non-nutrient variables in phytoplankton growth varied with different degrees of hydrological connectivity as confirmed by the LME models. In the low hydrological connectivity phase, the Chla dynamics were controlled only by water temperature with sufficient nutrients available. In the high hydrological connectivity phase, the synergistic influences of both nutrient and physical variables jointly limited the Chla dynamics. In addition, a significant increasing trend was observed for Chla variations from 2008 to 2018 in the HHC phase, which could largely be attributed to the elevated nutrient concentrations. This study confirmed the strong influences of hydrological connectivity on the nutrient and non-nutrient limitation of phytoplankton growth in floodplain lakes. The present study could provide new insights on the driving mechanisms underlying phytoplankton growth in floodplain lakes.

The cationic degradable polymer poly(lactic acid) choline iodide ester methacrylate, poly(PLA₄ChMA), can be used to flocculate particles and dewater sediments from tailings ponds and wastewater. A suitable bioaccessibility method is required to characterize the interactions of this novel flocculant in the human gastrointestinal system. To this end, a physiologically based extraction test (PBET) was modified to evaluate the bioaccessibility of flocculants. Bioaccessibility (bioaccessible fraction) is a measure of the solubility of a contaminant in gastrointestinal fluids and that may be available for systemic absorption. The flocculants poly(PLA₄ChMA), SNF C3276, and FLOPAM A3338 were tested at a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:200 in the absence and presence of kaolin clay, which is used as a model sediment compound. Bioaccessible fractions were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and estimated by gravimetry. The bioaccessibility of poly(PLA₄ChMA) in gastric and intestinal PBET solutions decreases from 78% and 100%, respectively, in the absence of kaolin to approximately 0% with kaolin, indicating that poly(PLA₄ChMA) remains adsorbed onto the clay surface throughout the PBET, a result confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. The bioaccessibility of cationic SNF C3276 and anionic FLOPAM A3338 in gastric solution is approximately 76% and 26%, respectively, and is not affected by the presence of kaolin. However, in intestinal solutions, the bioaccessibility of SNF C3276 and FLOPAM A3338 (60–85% in the absence of kaolin) changes to 0% and 100%, respectively, in the presence of kaolin. These results, interpreted in terms of solution pH and surface charge, demonstrate that interactions with kaolin influence the solubility of flocculants and must be considered in the evaluation of bioaccessibility. In future works, such bioaccessibility methods can be applied to assess the human-health safety of using flocculants in wastewater treatments.

Biological treatment is one of the most widely used methods to treat swine wastewater in wastewater treatment plants. The microbial community plays an important role in the swine slurry treatment system. However, limited information is available regarding the correlation between pollutant concentration and dominant microbial community in swine wastewater. This work aimed to study the profiling of microbial communities and their abundance in the 40 M³/day large-scale and step-by-step treatment pools of swine wastewater. Metagenome sequencing was applied to study the changes of microbial community structure in biochemical reaction pools. The results showed that in the heavily polluted pools, it was mainly Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Chlorella and other strains that could tolerate high concentration of ammonia nitrogen to remove nitrogen and absorb chemical oxygen demand (COD). In the moderately polluted pools, Nitrospirae, Actinobacteria and other strains further cooperated to purify swine wastewater. In the later stage, the emergence of Brachionus indicated the reduction of water pollution. The dominant microbes and their abundance changed with the purification of swine wastewater in different stages. Moreover, the dominant microflora of swine wastewater treatment pools at all levels reflected little difference in phylum classification level, while in genus classification level, the dominant microflora manifested great difference. Findings demonstrated that the microorganisms maintained ecological balance and absorbed the nutrients in the swine wastewater treatment pools, so as to play the role of purifying sewage. Therefore, the stepwise purification of swine wastewater can be realized by adding bacteria and microalgae of different genera.
