Determining the Fisheries Consumption Preferences of Ege University Students
2020
Hülya Saygı
Demand for fishery products rich in protein, vitamin, mineral and omega fatty acids is increasing day by day in order to meet the increasing nutritional needs of the world population. Despite being very beneficial fisheries, the amount of consumption in Turkey is very low compared to other countries. For this purpose, as an exemplary study, it has been tried to reveal the fishery consumption habits of students studying at Ege University. Faculties in Ege University have been considered as layers. In the study, a 25-question questionnaire was conducted face-to-face to 381 students selected according to the random sampling method between February and March 2019, and the results were obtained. The survey results obtained from the participants were evaluated using IBM SPSS 25.0 package program. The obtained results were evaluated by Chi-square analysis and Principal Component Analysis. Two group consumers emerged, representing coastal region 54.8% and Terrestrial region 45.2%. It has been determined that the most important reason for fish consumption in preference factors and availability is price. Ege University of students’ Consumer profiles; It was found to be different in terms of socio-demographic factors, consumption patterns, attitudes towards health and healthy food. As a result, it was determined that the fishery products were not consumed at the desired level in Ege University students. Accordingly, Ege University students should be made aware of increasing their consumption of fisheries. For this purpose, it is recommended to carry out promotions, advertisements and promotions that prove healthy.

2020
Şenol Paruğ | Özgür Cengiz
The maximum length, weight, and age information of organisms in an ecosystem, moreover, the first records of migrated exotic species are essential in terms of the basis for the studies on population dynamics, stock assessment, and biological activities. Therefore, the recording of such data may be necessary for scientific databases and new related studies. The Blackspot seabream (Red seabream - Pagellus bogaraveo), which belongs to the Sparidae family, is an important seafood which is marketed fresh and frozen around the Mediterranean and the Aegean seas. Nowadays, this species has high prices depending on market demands in domestic markets as a result of overfishing and is also cultured in northern Spain. It is classified as “Near Threatened Species” in the red list due to its decreasing population trend by the IUCN. A single specimen of the Blackspot seabream with 30.7 cm in total length and 390.00 g in total weight, which was angled in the Saros Bay with a handline by a fisherman on February 08, 2019, was obtained from a fishmonger in Çanakkale. Even though there are bigger individuals in the North-east Atlantic probably depending on polar and/or deep-sea gigantism, the mentioned measurement is the proven maximum total length of this species for the Aegean Sea up to the time.

2020
Yusuf Ziya Oğrak
The aim of the study was to determine the fertility traits of the Kangal Akkaraman sheep in Yildizeli and Central districts of Sivas. In this study, six years data obtained from breeders between 2013 and 2018 were used in National Animal Improvement Project coordinated by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In the first year of the study, 70 enterprises in 48 villages from both districts included in the projects and these were reduced to 57 enterprises in 33 villages in the sixth year. During the six-year period, 86116 lamb records obtained from a total of 76383 ewes in all enterprises were evaluated. Overall average birth rate was 92.7%. While the differences between years were statistically significant, differences between districts were not significant. Thetriplet births were also observed but they were not evaluated separately because of their low rate (0.1%), so they were included in twin births and evaluated as twins. The average twin birth rate was 22% and differences between years, districts and mating periods (five months between August and December) were significant for that. Overall average weaned lamb rate or the survival rate of the weaning period was 91.3% and differences according to years, districts and lambing periods (five months between January and May) were statistically significant for that. According to the values obtained from 5147 lamb records that were born from 4242 ewes of known age in a sub-project of year 2013; the ages (1-10) of sheep were found to have an effect on the birth type, while it was found to be statistically insignificant for the survival rate. According to the results of the research, it would be useful to take into account the factors that increase fertility in order to maximize profitability in the study area and enterprises with similar conditions.

2020
Hillary Moses Omondi Otieno | Shamie Zingore | George N. Chemining’wa | Charles K. Gachene
The trials were set up in Busia, Embu and Kirinyaga Counties to assess the effect of tillage methods and application of different fertilizer combinations on maize productivity in the lower and upper midland agro-ecological zones of Kenya. Tillage methods were no-tillage (NT) with crop residue retention as mulch (+CR) (NT+CR) and conventional tillage (CT) without crop residue retention on farm surface (-CR) (CT-CR) while fertilizer combinations were NK, NP, PK, NPK, and NPK+CaMgZnBS. The N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, B and S nutrients were applied at the rates of 120, 40, 40, 10, 10, 5 and 26.3 kg ha-1, respectively. The trials were laid in a randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement and replicated three times. The results showed that maize leaf area index, plant height, aboveground biomass, crop growth rate, and grain yield were significantly higher under CT-CR than under NT+CR in most of the sites. The CT-CR system out-yielded NT+CR system by 0.3 t ha-1 and 0.6 t ha-1 maize grain in Alupe and Kirinyaga, respectively. However, NT+CR system out-yielded CT-CR system by 0.4 t ha -1 maize grain at Embu. Across all the sites, application of PK and NPK+ZnBMgCaS fertilizer combinations resulted, respectively, in lowest and highest maize shoot biomass, leaf area indices, crop growth rates, plant heights, and grain yields. Based on this result alone, the potential of conservation agriculture in improving yields compared to conventional tillage could not be conclusive despite consistently recording higher soil moisture content across all sites and better yields in Embu. Again, application of a wide range of nutrients may be beneficial to maize production in the study areas as evidenced in the study. Therefore, we recommend multi-season and multi-location trials to comprehensively assess the impact of tillage methods and fertilizer management, particularly in relation to micronutrients.

The effects of environmental factors and reproductive activities on proximate composition of freshwater mussels, Unio pictorum, was investigated from February 2013 to February 2014 in Sinop, Turkey. Environmental parameters including total particulate matter, inorganic matter and organic matter, chlorophyll-a and temperature were determined monthly during the experimental period. Mean protein, lipid, moisture and meat yield were 56.03±0.79%, 4.42±0.31%, 82.19±0.21% and 21.75±0.91%, respectively. The obtained data indicate that the proximate composition of mussels is highly correlated with environmental factors and reproduction cycle. In conclusion, freshwater mussel based protein should be evaluated an alternative source of protein for the feed industry.

2020
Mehmet Halis Koçer | Ömer Konuşkan
This study was conducted to identify the current problems of cereal crops like wheat and corn producers and to suggest solutions for overcoming those problems in Amik Plain (Antakya, Kirikhan, Kumlu, Reyhanli districts) in Hatay province of Turkey. In this study, the primary data was obtained by face-to-face survey from 100 cereal producers in Amik plain. All variables are given as frequency and percentage distribution, and numerical variables as mean. The survey assessed the level of education of grain producers, the number of individuals in the farm, record keeping, social security, crops (wheat and corn) growing area, yield, sowing and harvest date ranges, property and leasehold land use, cultural practices and grain production. The data were analysed using simple statistical analysis methods (frequency, averages, percentage distribution). The results indicated that about 50% of the cereal producers had higher educational degree. It was determined that producers had an average of 12.3 ha of wheat and 15 ha of corn cultivated area. Moreover, cereal production is well known as one of the cultural practices in the study area. The main problem of grain producers is that the low cereal prices. In addition, the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) does not purchase the production at the time of harvesting. Moreover, high production costs and corn irrigation are considered other problems that cereal producers are facing.

2020
Eser Eke Bayramoglu | Fatma Coşkun Topuz | Mehmet Münir Ayana | Samet Soylu
In this research, the effect of extract obtained from waste mandarin peels on inhibition or retardation of ageing of the leather was investigated. Firstly, mandarin peels were extracted and antioxidant activity of the mandarin peels were detected by using of DPPH method. This antioxidant method is based on DPPH that is a purple stable compound, inhibition with sample compound. Extracted mandarin peel samples were read by spectrophotometer at 517 nm wavelength. At final, antioxidant activity of mandarin extract was determined as 65 µM TE/g. The mandarin extract treated with leather after formic acid fixation as a fixator. Goat leathers were kept under 80°C/UV for 72 hours for aging process and the colour values of initial and hindermost leathers were measured with using of Konica Minolta CM 3600d Brand spectrophotometer. L*, a*, b* and ΔE values of the samples were calculated. At the end of the study, it was found that mandarin extract was a natural antioxidant and if it was used as a fixator it could have aging retardant effect at the leather production. Also, it was determined that the use of waste mandarin peels extract increases the brightness of the leather. The difference between the colour values of the leather samples in which the extract was used and not used was found statistically significant.

2020
Neval Topcu Altıncı | Rüstem Cangi | Deniz Üstün
Plants are constantly exposed to adverse conditions in their environment, which may occur in different ways, limiting their growth. These negative states that affect and / or prevent growth, development and metabolism in plants are called stress. Salicylic acid (SA) is a hormone-like substance commonly found in plants and is now accepted to play an important role in regulating plant growth and development. Salicylic acid also increases the tolerance of plants under abiotic stress conditions such as salinity, high and low temperature, water, heavy metal, frost and drought stress. This study is one of the important white wine grape varieties belonging to Turkey's Narince grape varieties growing in Tokat made widely used. Salicylic acid (SA) was applied to the plants in 4 different doses (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 µmol l-1) before high temperature stress to be applied and they were exposed to high temperature for 12 hours at 40°C in the growth chamber. At the end of the 21 days after the stress application, shoot length (cm), fresh -dry shoot and root weights (g) were taken in order to follow the plant growth from the plants. Proportional water content (%), Ion flow (%) to reveal the effect of salicylic acid and the cell membrane damage rate (%) was calculated.

2020
Bekir Atar
For about 10 thousand years, new varieties have emerged naturally or artificial in wheat. Factors for the development of new varieties are fertilization, machine use, changing taste preferences and adaptation to climate change and exc. In the study; Apogee variety, which is one of the most recently developed varieties, has low sensitivity to vernalization and photoperiod, and Einkorn and Emmer, which is one of the oldest known varieties, and Tosunbey variety, which has been developed in our country in recent years, were compared in terms of agronomic characteristics. The research was carried out at room temperature and field conditions with spring planting. At room temperature, Apogee variety reached harvest maturity in 87 days, Emmer variety’s in 140 days, Tosunbey variety’s in 116 days. Since Einkorn variety could not meet the need for vernalization, its development ceased at stem elongation stage. All varieties have completed their development by meeting the need for vernalization in field conditions. Apogee variety reached harvest maturity in 93 days, Einkorn variety in 118 days, Emmer variety in 108 days, Tosunbey variety in 115 days. In land conditions, Apogee varieties ripen later, while other varieties ripened earlier. Thousand grain weights were 24.3 g in Apogee variety, 17.3 g in Emmer variety, 26.7 g in Tosunbey variety at room temperature conditioning, 11.3 g in Apogee variety, 20.3 g in Einkorn variety, 24.7 g in Emmer variety and 26.0 g in Emmer variety at field conditioning. In field condition, thousand-grain weights of Apogee variety decreased seriously.
