Slip-sinkage behaviour of a shear annulus on a sandy soil

An attempt was made to study the slip-sinkage behaviour of a shear annulus in a sandy soil at various bulk densities. It was found that at low and medium densities slip-sinkage started as soon as shear deformation took place and increased practically linearly with increasing shear deformation, irrespective of normal pressure. At high density slip-sinkage did only start when maximum shear stress was established; further increase in shear deformation induced a linear increase in slip-sinkage which was positively related to the normal pressure imposed on the shear annulus. At all densities studied, the value of the critical normal pressure to induce slip-sinkage was about 50% less than the static bearing capacity of the soil.
