Harahap, Z. | Parthohardjono, S. | Shush, G. S.
Tidal swamp areas have unique characteristics. The soil are high in organic matter, low in pH (3.5 to 5.5) high in salt, some are acid sulphate soils and most are poor in plant nutrients. The poor condition of the soil makes it not very suitable for rice production, however it can be increased by land reclamation and varietal improvement. The main concern of this paper is varietal improvement. Problems and breeding strategies of selection and adaptation of rice varieties to be grown in the tidal swamp areas are discussed.
