The heavy metal content (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) of Umbilicaria spp. collected from the Sudety region (mainly Karkonosze), south-west Poland have been determined. Data are provided from several habitats at 15 sites for U. cylindrica (L.) Del., U. deusta (L.) Baumg., U. hirsuta (Sw.) Ach., U. murina (Ach.) DC., U. nylanderiana (Zahlbr.) H. Magn., U. polyphylla (L.) Baumg. and U. pustulata (L.) Hoffm. In general, the levels in the lichen thalli are indicative of background rather than enhanced concentrations in the substrata. At one site, however, the measurements reflect local atmospheric contamination. Literature sources and measurements for material collected from Ireland provide comparative information.
