Propagation of Magnolias from green cuttings using various factors stimulating rooting

Several species and varieties of Magnolias were under investigation namely M. soulangiana, M. stellata, M. liliflora, and M. kobus. It was found that cuttings should be taken from young mother plants in late June or July from shoots arising from the lower and central part of the shrub. Strongest root systems were formed by cutting from current year shoots with 3 nodes and a slanting cut at the base. The cuttings were placed in a propagating greenhouse or under double plastic greenhouses. The best medium for rooting was a mixture of peat and sand (2:1) placed on a 3 cm layer of steamed compost soil. The largest percentage of rooted cuttings was obtained after treating them with dust preparations containing auxin (IBA 1.0-2.0%) mixed with rutin 0.4%, pyrogallol 0.4%, indol 0.2% or nicotinic acid 0.2%, or using all these components simultaneously in the form of a multicomponent preparation.
