Critical period of weed competence and herbicide assessment in sweet pepper plantations

The critical period of weed competition in peppers (Capsicum annum L.) var. "California Wonder was studied in randomized blocks design experiment with 4 replications in the IISV Experimental Station, Alquizar, Havana province, on a Red Ferralitic soil during 1980-1981 period. It was also assessed weed control and selectivity to peppers by preplanting treatments of trifluralin (0,5-1,5 kg a.i/ha), olitref (0,75-1,0 kg a.i/ha) and nitralin (1,5-2,25 kg a.i./ha), as well as by post-planting and pre-emergence treatments for the weeks with diphenamide (3,2-4,8 kg a.i/ha) in experiments carried out at the same place, with the same designs and number of replicates as above during the 1975-1976 and 1978-1979 periods. It was established that pepper highest yields are obtained where the crop is weeded during the first 50-70 days after planting; thus, the crop is classified as susceptible weed competition. The most selective treatments were those based on trifluralin (1,0-1,5 kg a.i./ha) which should be soil-incorporated to the 7-10 cm depth and not to be used in areas with high incidence of Parthenium hysterophorus; and on diphenamide (4,8 kg a.i./ha) which offered yields near to or higher than those in the hand weeded plots in all cases.
