An empirical modification to the method of germinating seeds in commercial oil palm seed production

Oil palm seeds which are derived from different bunches have variable optimum moisture requirements. Optimal germination can be obtained by manipulating the seeds so that they are at their optimum moisture content for germination after the heat treatment. This is achieved by soaking the seeds for 1 day followed by surface drying for about an hour. Germination is completed in about 30 days with over 90% germination. The viability of saturated seeds is unimpaired and can give optimal germiantion on air-drying for 6 hours. The fast rate of germination reduces the incidence of microbial infections
