Effects of length of feeding period and quantity of energy on the growth and fattening of Awassi and Karadi lambs (in Iraq)

This investigation was conducted at the farm of the College of Agriculture and Forestry to study the growth and fattening performance of lambs for different monthly periods in order to find out the best time for slaughter. Also to find out the effect of quality of the energy consumed according to N.R.C. requirements. The results showed that the average final weight was increased as the length of feeding period was increased. As for the feed utilization, the results showed that lambs' efficiency for feed conversion was reduced when the feeding time was extended in both feeding regime and breeds. Also it was found that Karadi- were more efficient than Awassi lambs in converting feed into body gains. Moreover, better feed utilization was obtained by lambs fed normal quality energy compared to lambs fed lower quality energy. The statistical analysis showed that carcass weight was significantly increased as the feeding period was extended in feeding treatments under study but the breed differences were not significant
