Effect of water stress at different growth stages on corn yield (in Iraq)

This experiment was conducted at Research Farms of the State Board of Applied Agricultural Research of Abu-Ghraib in the autumn season of 1981 and repeated at farms of the college of Agriculture at Abu-Ghraib in autumn 1983. The objective was to study the effect of water stress at different growth stages on corn yield. Moisture stress was applied in the following growth stages and compared with the check treatment (on water stress): 1. tasseling, 2. silking, 3. grain formation, 4. grain filling and 5. dough stage. Irrigations were given when 50 percent of available soil moisture was depleted at depth of 0-30 cm. Water stress had significantly affected all the characters studied in the year 1981 and 1983 except the number of days from planting to 7540 tasseling and number of grain rows per ear. Water stress during growth stages decreased the grain yield significantly. It is to emphasize the importance of supplying adequate soil moisture at critical growth stages in corn for maximising the grain yield
