With the use of data from breeding experiments derived from selected parents from restricted populations, some of the assumprtions necessary for valid quantitative genetic analysis could not be met and the biases incurred were unestimateable. Despite the biases, these estimates do provide useful information but construction of predicted selection response and selection index will be of limited value. To the oil palm breeder whose interest is centred on a set of selected parents, an analysis of general and specific combining ability for a fixed set of lines can provide him much information to improve his breeding efforts without having to resort to methods with rather strict genetic assumptions. It is felt that even for an oil palm breeder in the public sector it is more worthwhile to undertake such an approach instead of trying to generate experimental populations which conform to the requirements for quantitative genetic analysis
