Development of mosaic resistant tobacco varieties in Indonesia
1983
Hartana, I.
The mosaic disease caused by tobacco mosaic virus is one of the major diseases in some types of Indonesian tobacco. Efforts to develop resistant tobacco varieties using Ambalema type of resistance had been made in the 1950s, but they were unsuccessful due to linkage between resistance and poor plant type. The use of glutinosa resistance through NN-White Burley produced a new variety of cigar tobacco with high resistance, satisfactory yield and quality of cured leaves. The resistance is based on hypersensitivity to virus infection resulting in necrosis and virus localization. A differential response was observed between homozygous resistant plants regarding the progress of secondary necrosis in the stem
