Gunnera macrophylla Bl., a weed in the Philippines which occupies pioneer situations in high altitudes (1,000 to 2,400 m), and its symbiotic relations with a blue-green algae, Nostoc punctiforme is of considerable ecological significance. G. macrophylla - N. punctiforme association represents a remarkable case of true symbiosis which seems inherent to all species. The algal symbionts in the glands by the base of the leaf can add as much as 29 kg/ha N per year to the ecosystem. When this weed grows with pechay [Brassica pekinensis (Lour.) Rupr.] and headcabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.). a significant increase in yield by as much as 50 per cent has been observed
