Genotype-environment interaction effect on average milk production on local and crossbred cows [dairy cattle; Malaysia]

The results indicated that the crossbred cows produced significantly more (.5 kg/day and .9 kg/day) milk than the local Indian Dairy cows respectively, suggesting that the crossbred cows had the potential of producing more milk under the existing local conditions. The most interesting finding was the existince of the cowbreed x management system interaction which had an influence on the average milk prodcution. The data indicated that the average milk production of the crossbred cows were depressed when grass were fed to them as to the Local Indian Dairy cows However, the crossbred cows respond favourably to improved management system and excelled the local Indian Dairy in average milk production when supplemented with concentrate mixtures. The data suggested that the crossbred cows required more feed for maintenance and production than local Indian Dairy cows in order to produce a satisfactory level of milk production. The Local Indian Dairy cows did respond to improved management to a certain degree, but not as favourable as the crossbred cows
