Increased utilization of coconut by-products [copra meal; paring meal] in broiler rations

Results showed that the use of as high as 45% copra/paring meals is feasible for broilers, although a slight depression in feed intake with 45% meals was obtained in some trials. Paring meal is better than copra meal as broiler feed. Pelleting of high copra/paring meal feeds is not economically advantageous, considering the time, labor and cost. Cellulase and organisms did not appear to improve cell-wall breakdown and feeding value of coconut by-products. Effect of using high levels of coconut by-products is advantageous because it brings down level of yellow corn from 50 to 18-25 percent and of soybean oil meal from 30 or higher to as low as 10 to 14 percent, but increases coconut oil to 6 or 8 percent. However, it required fish meal from 6.0 in the control to as high as 14 percent depending on the protein content
