A high concentration of sodium chloride delayed seed germination and inhibited the development of rice seedlings. The severity of these effects was reduced significantly with low concentrations of 3,5 dichloro-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (DCHB) in the saline growth medium. Such growth promotion in the presence of NaCl was associated with the action of DCHB on osmoregulation. The beneficial action on germination was not related to enhanced imbibition but its effect on subsequent seedling growth was accompanied by an increased chloride ion content in the root. Cultivar response to treatment was also observed
