Effects of some detergents to pH N P K in soil and on the growth of Eugenia malaccensis Linn., Calendula officinalis Linn. and Brassica campestris Linn.

Studies on the effects of 3 kinds of detergents, ABS1, ABS2, and ABS3 to pH N P and K in soil as well as to the growth of Eugenia malaccensis Linn., Calendula officinalis Linn. and Brassica campestris Linn. revealed that: these 3 kinds of detergents at different concentrations caused the change of pH value and in the amount of N, P and K in soil. The pH value has been increased from the lowest concentration level 0.1 to the highest 2.0 ppm respectively. The amount of N and K in soil decreased throuhgout the experiment while the opposite result occurred with P. The fluctuation (both increase and decrease) occurred especially at high concentration level. The effects of detergents on plant growth indicated that ABS1 and ABS2 at concentration 0.5 ppm caused maximum growth to Eugenia malaccensis with darkest green color and largest leaves compared with the other concentrations. The same results was also observed when applied with the solution of ABS1 or ABS2 or ABS3 at 1.0 ppm to Calendula officinales. The plants produced largest flowers and maximum stem height. With Brassica campestris, maximum stem height and dry weight was obtained when applied with 1.0 ppm solution of ABS1 or ABS2. The plants were affected by high concentration detergent at 2.0 ppm. Soils have become more compact, sticky and hard. The soil capability of absorbing water was very low. Calcium and magnesium content was high. ABS2 appeared to be more toxic than ABS1 and ABS3
