A study of reproductive growth in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill)

The study of reproductive growth of soybean as affected by different photoperiods, simulated by artificial light, and plant populations had been conducted between 1979-80, using soybean varieties SJ.1, SJ.2, SJ.4, Clark 63 and Williams. As the photoperiod increased, number of day to flower, number of day at complete flowering and flowering period were delayed. Number of flower increased as the photoperiod extended. Vegetative growth of soybean was affected by extended photoperiod. As flowering delayed, vegetative growth of soybean resulted in the increase in total dry matter, number of branches, and number of nodes and leaves. Better vegetative growth resulted in the increase in pod production and lengthening the maturity. However, the number of seed per pod remained unchanged in all photoperiod treatments. Soybean variety SJ.2 produced better growth compared to other varieties. Dry matter production, yield components, and yield of SJ.2 soybean was significantly higher than other soybean varieties. SJ.4 soybean was planted in the different plant density using the spacing of 50 cm. between rows and 50 cm., 25 cm., 12.5 cm. and drilling the seed in rows as the spacing within rows. The highest density obtained by drilling the seeds significantly increased soybean height. However, dry matter production, number of flower per plant decreased as flower and pod abortion percentage increased. Number of seed per pod remained unchanged in all plant density treatments. Highest yield was obtained when seeds were drilled within rows.
