Effect of rice straw, transparent polyethylene and black polyethylene mulches on growth and yield of chinese cabbage in spring were investigated. Plants directly sown on Apr 10, the optimum seeding time for spring crop, grew rapidly and showed significantly higher plant weight in the transparent PE mulch plot than other treatments. Increase of plant weight mainly resulted from increasing the number of leaves and leaf width. Yield of the transparent PE plot was not different from the other mulch treatments compared, because rate of soft rot infection was significantly higher in that particular treatment
