Fertilizer and population experiment on recommended corn (Zea mays L.) varieties [Philippines]

The results showed that increasing the plant population from 53,333 plants/ha to 70,000 plants/ha resulted in increased ear height, leaf area index and shelling recovery while decreasing ear length and ear diameter. Increasing the rate of fertilizer (NPK) markedly increased ear length, ear diameter and grain yield of the corn varieties, but not the ear height, weight of 1000 seeds, percent shelling, silking days and leaf area index. The highest mean grain yield (5393 kg/ha) was obtained from 120-60-60 treatment of Pioneer 6181 (V3) during wet season of 1981 at 70,000 plant population density and in IPB Var 1 (V1, 4860 kg/ha) at 120-60-60 treatment during dry season of 1981-1982 at 53,333 plant population density. In this study, an increase in leaf area index did not produce a significant increase in grain yield. In the experiment, the increase in grain yield was due to increase in the rate of fertilizer application but not from an increase of plant population density
