The influence of different ratios of concentrate and roughage feeds on the performance of early weaned lambs [sheep]

This paper presents results obtained after examining possibilities of fattening young lambs with concentrated feed and forage. The research was carried out under production conditions (a farm in Coka) and comprised lambs of Cigaja breed, about 30 days old. The experiment consisted of three variants. In the first variant only concentrate mixture was used: 60% of corn chop, 15% of barley, 10% of soybean oil meal, 6% of sunflower oil meal, 8% of wheat bran, 0.5% of premix and 0.5% of salt. Feeding was ad libitum. On the basis of results achieved, following conclusions were made: -An intensive fattening of young lambs can be organized successfully, using relatively cheap feed. -The best weight gain is achieved if part of the concentrate (30%) in a daily meal is replaced by alfalfa hay. Apart from economic effects, fattening of young lambs is justifiable in terms of milk production, since in this way a higher quantity of milk a year per fertile sheep is obtained, having in mind that most of the milk that lambs would have consumed under conditions of classical raising is left.
