Housing and feeding systems for sows and their reproductive traits [level of feeding just after mating]

The influence of a high feeding level immediately after service on the reproductive properties of sows was investigated. The experiment was performed upon 120 sows. All the sows were fed uniformly, ad libitum, starting from the first day after weaning, with the standard mixture and with the possibility of free water consumption. After service, the sows in the experimental group continued with ad libitum feeding, while those in the control group were transfered to timited feeding with 2 kg of mixture daily the next day after service. The experiment lasted 14 days. The number of liveborn piglets in the experimental group of sows was lower by 0.32 piglets, but the difference was not statistically significant (P more than 0.05). Sows should not be fed richly after service, on the contrary, they ought to be transfered to limited feeding with 2 kg of mixture daily. Service period, the interval between two farrowings and farrowing index do not vary significantly between the groups (P more than 0.05). There are basically no larger differences in the fertility properties, no matter whether the sows after weaning and in the service period are kept separately and whether they are fed ad libitum, or limitedly. Nevertheless, there are some advantages of separate keeping in the service period (anxiety of sows is prevented, the danger that they get hurt is reduced, the sows from the botton of the domination order show oestrus better, there is a possibility of adjusting the feeding).
