The rainbow trout culture (Salmo gairdneri Rich 1836) in the floating cages in the brackish water

It was investigated whether there was a locality in the Mediterranean,i.e. in the Adriatic sea where rainbow trout, which had never been bred there, could be bred. On the basis of the obtained results the following conclusions were drawn: It is possible to breed rainbow trout in floating fish boxes in the brackish water of the Rokovaca cove, in the estuary of the river Krka into the Adriatic sea. Breeding of rainbow trout is possible if the temperature at the depth of 1,5 m is 8.5-26'C, the quantity of dissolved oxygen 10.0-13.5 mg/l, pH 8-8.2 and salinity 0.2 -28.5 per mill. The rate of growth of rainbow trout in the brackish water of the Krka estuary is over 3 times as quick as that in the freshwater breeding in Yugoslavia, and the increment per sq m of breeding area is 4.4-13 times higher compared with various freshwater ponds in SR Croatia (SFRY). With the application of the described technology it is possible to increase the production of the rainbow trout by several times and, with comparatively low investments, use new water areas that have not been used so far in aquaculture.
