A study on the heritability estimates of body weight of indigenous chickens

Body weight heritability of 274 indigenous (day-old and 10-weeks old) chicks produced from 12 males and 37 females was estimated. The estimated heritability of day-old chicks ranged from 0.005 to 0.757. The same for body weight of 10-week old ranging from 0.074-0.582. The results indicated that the indigenous chickens of Bangladesh have some degree of inheritance with respect to transmission of body weight to their progeny. It is therefore suggested that selection may improve this trait to some extent
