Genetic variability and charachter association in groundnut [Arachis hypogaea L. of Bangladesh]

Eighteen genotypes/varieties of groundnut were studied for estimation of genetic variability, genetic parameters and correlation coefficient among different yield component characters. Highly significant variations were observed among the varieties for all the characters studied. The variety DG-2 performed best and gave highest pod yield (3.16 t/ha) and took maximum time for maturity (207.00 days) ICG-1908 gave lowest pod yield (0.28 t/ha) but it was dwarf (8.13cm) and early in maturity (180.00 days). Highest genetic coefficient of variation was observed in pod yield/ha followed by number of primary branches/plant, number of pods/plant and 100 kernel weight. High heritabilities were observed in days to maturity (94.76%) and 100 kernal wt. (90.00%); while high values of genetic gain were obtained in all the characters studied except days to maturity and shelling percentage. Pod yield was significantly and positively associated with days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branches/plant, number of pods/plant and 100 kernel weight. Again days to maturity was also associated positively with plant height, number of primary branches/plant, number of pods/plant and 100 kernel weight.
