The growth retardant, paclobutrazol applied as a soil drench at 0, 1.5, 3 and 6g ai per tree in May, 1984 and at 0, 1.13, 2.25 and 4.5g ai per tree in Apr, 1985 to 'Fuji' apple trees on M 26 planted 4.7 x 2.9 m in 1980. In 1984, paclobutrazol treatment did not reduce terminal growth, number of leaves per shoot, leaf weight and leaf area, but slightly increased chlorophyll content of leaf. Paclobutrazol caused early formation of terminal bud. In 1985, paclobutrazol reduced markedly terminal growth, leaf area, leaf weight, internode length of shoot, number of leaves per shoot and pedicel length, but increased significantly chlorophyll content of leaf. Paclobutrazol delayed flowering by 2-3 days
