Identification and screening of Penicillium isolates from shelled corn [Zea mays] for production of mycotoxins

Field Penicillia identified were P. oxalicum (7.4%) and P. funiculosum (6.6%), and P. palitans (3.3%). P. variabile (4%) was physiologically classified as an intermediate group. Field Penicillia grew fastest at 30 deg C whereas storage Penicilla grew fastest at 24 deg C. Growth at 36-37 deg C (Field Penicillia) and 4 deg C (storage Penicillia) clearly distinguished one group from the other. Penicillium spp. were screened for production of 6 mycotoxins (citrinin, cyclopiazonic acid, ochratoxin, patulin, penicillic acid, and xanthomegnin). The number of positive/total tested were 0/20 citrinin, 0/496 cyclopiazonic acid, 0/496 ochratoxin, 0/158, patulin, 3/50 penicillic acid, and 11/87 xanthomegnin. Only three isolates out of twenty P. cyclopium isolates and eleven out of twenty nine P. viridicatum isolates were positive for penicillic acid and xanthomegnin, respectively
