During the years 1977-79 a series of ensiling experiments with Poa pratensis ssp. alpigena (cv.'Holt') and Phleum pratense (cv.'Bodin' or cv.'Engmo') were carried out in the Northern Norway at four experimental stations. Generally, it was more difficult to achieve good conservation of Poa than of Phleum. In addition, the content of fermentation products was on a higher level in Poa than in Phleum. In Poa silage, the content of crude protein and true protein was higher, and crude fibre content and cell wall constituents were lower than in Phleum. The chemical composition of Poa was less negatively influenced by the stage of maturity than Phleum. The average digestibility of the organic matter was estimated to be 75 and 69, in Poa and Phleum, respectively. The content of feed units(kg DM)-1 was 0.79 and 0.70 in Poa and Phleum, respectively. Also at later times of harvest Poa silage showed the highest calculated energy content. The amount of digestible crude protein (kg DM)-1 was 119 g in Poa and 71 g in Phleum
